  1. NFL 2019: Five players who are poised to make the leap and become Year 2 breakouts

This isn't a surprise to Bills fans.  But, it is fun to see the national media recognize it.

One positive that strikes me about our defense, is how well-balanced it is in age. Youth, and the future core, is served with Edmunds, Oliver, Milano and White. Meanwhile, our veterans, still in their prime, with Hughes, Poyer and Hyde, are leading the way. We are set up for a 5-7 year run as one of the NFL's dominant defenses.

The downtown issues still and will remain. They are costly, time-consuming, and politically touchy.

    1. Infrastructure. A new stadium would require massive upgrades to existing sewer and water systems. The systems in the downtown core simply can't handle that. The upgrades would be in the tens of millions if not hundreds, including addressing stormwater. The average person who hasn't spent a second in the development field tends to look only at the structure, missing out on the massive investment it often takes in upgrading existing or installing new public infrastructure. All of that exists on Abbott Rd.

    2. Transportation. This might be the biggest hurdle. There's not a site downtown, whether it's the Old First Ward, Waterfront, or somewhere else that offers easy access by auto OR a mix of public transportation and auto. Old First Ward comes closest but existing surface road system can't carry the traffic for a game.

    3. Land acquisition. This is a the politically touchy issue. Pegulas clearly have the financial ability to buy properties one at time in the Old First Ward or pretty much anywhere. However, the prices goes up as more property owners hold out for a sweetheart deal. The City could take properties by eminent domain on behalf of the team, but that's not a good look for a Mayor to take a property from a family to give it to a billionaire for fair market value. There are literally hundreds of small properties in the Old First Ward and surrounding areas owned by individuals that would require extensive legal work and costs to acquire. I have been told there are contracts to buy on some streets in the City but was not told which streets. Again, there's free land on Abbott St.

My money would be on continuing to walk along with this stadium as long as possible, hoping the fortunes of the city and region improve as climate change becomes and issue and the water wars take place, which make this region a sustainable place. Then if we see both an improvement in the overall economy and some population growth, it'll be a conversation for 10 years from now. Barring that, a new, simple stadium across from the current one would be my educated and informed guess.

I feel smarter, having read this. Thank you!

I will never accept 6-10 as outperforming expectations

    NEVER!!!!

    Well, that's your call.

Taking a full view of last year, including the massive dead cap we ate while starting a rookie "project" quarterback, I view the team's development and late season momentum/excitement as outperforming expectations. Let's agree to disagree.

Quickly is a relative term.  The rams making the super bowl is pretty quick.  Think McDermott is more of a plodders pace.

In this case, "quickly" refers to this season, with the extreme roster turnover. I have not kept track of the free agent numbers. But (putting my Captain Obvious hat on), our totally revamped offensive line and new receivers will need to come together, quickly. I see that as, along with JA's continuing development, the coaching staff's biggest challenge this year. As I said, McDermott's performance in the first two years bodes well.

    Regarding your view of McDermott as a plodder;

    - In year one, observers universally predicted a Bills tank. We made the playoffs.

    - In year two, the team was built on a fraction of the salary cap. Rather than collapsing with the resulting lack of talent, the team came together and improved throughout the year.

The Bills' positive current and future state is a result of managing through those two years of pain. McDermott is not a plodder. He is a high quality NFL head coach and a true leader.

I believe the Bills significantly out performed expectations in '17 & '18, due in no small part to McDermott's leadership and coaching. It seems that CBS agrees.

With the current roster overhaul, McDermott is facing a huge challenge to put it all together, and quickly. From what I've seen to date, I am confident he will.

2019 is a real "Coach of the Year" opportunity in Bills Country.

    How about this:

"Allen has potential but he's still young and has a lot to learn".

    or

"It's not fair to compare Allen to Mahomes at this point in their careers.  They're in very different situations."

    or

"We'll have to wait & see how the season plays out.  You don't really know until guys put on the pads and there's some real contact but I like what I see so far."

    or

"Allen is coming along nicely but it wouldn't be fair to compare him to Mahomes at this point.  They're different guys with unique strengths."

There are a lot of ways Morse could have been guarded or even tepid in his opinion on Allen without being insulting.  That he wasn't and seemed eager to compare him to what he saw in Mahomes is encouraging - nothing more or less.

Exactly. And, on top of that, Morse is widely thought of as a very smart guy. Therefore, if he says it, I believe he means it.

well to be fair. The Moon is actually *moving away from the Earth at about 1.5" a year and seeing as how the universe was made from the Big Bang our destiny is predetermined. The universe is a sphere like a big bubble that keeps growing so if the Moon keeps going it will eventually circle the universe and hit Earth. Bam. Game over.

*EX: Just like flying out of LAX non stop around the world. You are at the same time moving away from LAX and towards LAX at the same time.

You made me laugh out loud AND my head hurt at the same time. Well done!

Serious question.....are you going to provide us with some pertinent comments or are you here to critique a poster who has been here for decades, and may have forgotten more than you will ever know about football. I suggest that you read his posts, evaluate them, and perhaps learn something, or at the very least, consider a point of view that doesn't necessarily coincide with yours.

If you want to read nothing but rah-rah type posts, you might consider signing onto some of these "grade school" sites about which you speak instead of coming here with the sole intent of insulting our members.

I don't know Bill, your "Serious question" quickly devolves into a defensive rant. Despite that, I'll give a brief, somewhat serious answer:

    - I did not critique a poster, merely his argumentative responses in this discussion.

    - I also did not critique this site (which I very much enjoy), merely the argumentative responses in this discussion

    - You are correct, I rarely post. When I do, it is usually supportive of the conversation at hand. That's just my personality.

    - Finally, I am sorry to read that BADOLBILZ may have forgotten a lot of football. I hope he gets his memory back.

Does being from NYC, Bill, contribute to your effervescent style of communications?

Come on.  There was good discourse back and forth - would hate to see it reduced to "you're not a real fan if you're critical of the product."

Honestly Coach, I haven't found this to be "good discourse" at all. While JW is sharing his (quality) thoughts and information, BADOLBILZ has petulantly and pointlessly argued with every post, as if taking on a sportswriter is providing 15 minutes of fame. I look forward to what JW has to share and have had to tolerate BADOLBILZ' (I want ice cream!!!!!!) grade school level responses to read it.

Not for winners who expect more of themselves. It’s one of Allen’s best character traits; he is simply not afraid to hold himself accountable. I doubt we will ever hear excuses coming from him. Explanations, yes. But he just strikes me as someone who doesn’t have time for excuses since he’s all about getting on with fixing mistakes and improving.

And I Goddamn guarantee that doesn’t go unnoticed in the locker room, the classroom, and the on the field by his coaches and other players.

    It’s a winner’s trait.

Too funny. We simultaneously wrote the same thing, using different words. I approve of this message.

This might sound minor, but I really appreciate Josh's ability to be critical of himself. When talking about the Chargers game, he mentions how he said the wrong word for protections and it screwed up the offense and it was all his fault. It's obvious it was his fault, but I've run into too many people in my life who cannot admit when they are wrong. It's so annoying and I still haven't figured out what it says about a person who refused to take responsibility for their mistakes, but I'm happy Allen isn't like that.

I do not believe this is a "minor" point. I agree with you, emphatically.

In a quality learning environment, self-critical thinking is imperative and accountability is a key to improvement. As much as I (we) like Allen, we all know he must learn and improve - quite a bit. He obviously has the physical tools. His willingness to admit and own his mistakes and growth opportunities are what will propel him to excellence as an NFL quarterback. It also is what will make him a credible leader in a locker room full of alpha males.

In this way, I think he is remarkably like McDermott. Color me excited.

    “The Hopeless Optimist”

I know I’m probably heading for a big crash, but I can’t help it: I think the golden age of the Buffalo Bills is upon us.  I think we are about to witness the greatest run of excellence in the history of the franchise, and one of the greatest of all time in the NFL.

    ...

Well stated Mr. Shaw. Drop the mic and drink the beer I have waiting for you. Fun times are upon us.

Or, you lack basic writing skills. Your comment read as very snide. Also, I didn't see anyone go crazy. So, maybe your reading comprehension is as much a growth opportunity as your writing. Let's begin with commas...
