  1. While I agree that Allen, Morse and Singletary can significantly lift the Bills this year, I view our defense as the real key to success. We have, potentially, a top five D possessing not only shutdown capabilities, but also point scoring talent. Our surest path to the playoffs is with the Bills defense bringing 60 minutes of hell every Sunday. That will be our foundation.

The offensive side of the ball can then, if all goes well, take us from good to great. I don't have a clue as what to expect from special teams play in the coming year.

I was 9 years old at that Jets game in 1988 with my dad.

As the game ended and the fans stormed the field I asked him if we could go down and just "get close". He agreed, and I tore down the steps toward the sidelines.

I got down to the wall ahead of my dad, but it was a HUGE drop for a kid to make on his own. So my dad thought Id be stuck waiting there for him to catch up. NOPE!

A couple of friendly, helpful (and drunk) adults grabbed me and safely passed me over the wall and down onto the field, because obviously a small child should be passed down into that sea of madness.

My dad sure moved quick down the rest of those stairs and over the wall to catch up with me.

    Great times! Great memories!

An epic "Dad Story" where Mom would neither understand, nor approve.

i was at that game.....part of the goal post upright , was carried up the lower bowl steps and tossed over the side.....thought for sure someone was gonna get killed.

What I remember most about that scene was when I jumped down (no small jump!) on to the field and ended up next to Dan Marino. My first thought was, "Holy crap, he's huge!". Then, I ran like hell out onto the field.

  5. I believe (if I have my dates correct) we also stormed the field and tore down both goalposts in December of 1990 after defeating Miami. The key was that the win clinched home field advantage through the playoffs. I (both shamefully and proudly) had my hands on both goalposts as they came down.

The fans remaining in the stands then passed one set of goalposts up to the owners box a a "gift" to Ralph Wilson. The network carrying the national late game periodically cut back to the stadium to track the progress of the goal post's journey. My single happiest day as a Bills fan.

Wrong. As long as we use our differences to demean each other, there will always be division.

I enjoy learning from folks who are different from me.

Are you from a part of the world that I've never been to? Please, tell me about it.

Are you from the city? I'm from a rural area. Please, tell me about it.

Do you worship in a different way? Please, tell me about it.

We are different from each other. We do not need to hide from that fact or ignore it. I do not need to meet people just like me. Honestly, I bore me. If you're different, let's enjoy it. Please, tell me about it.

Real football talk isn't enough. Let's add PRETEND football talk to the mix!

You just read my mind. I live in Boston and tuned into WGR (10 minutes ago) to get a "hometown feel" for the Bills as we near the final big cut. Instead, I got a fantasy breakdown, with a very serious piece of advice, "spend your money in the draft if you want a player!"

For Crissake, this is a big, big week. Show some Bills knowledge and talk REAL football.

At least He’s been practicing for awhile. Got the red shirt removed last week or week before. Just no in game reps, which could be impactful early in the season since they haven’t played together before.

This is where I get tangled up with the Morse scenario. I agree that moving cautiously is correct when dealing with concussions. However, I am not as comfortable as this board seems to be with him waiting until week one to play. Offensive lines are teams unto themselves. Individuals need to learn how to work most effectively together, gelling into a high-performing (we hope) unit. Inserting Mitch Morse, the group leader, at game time, doesn't make me optimistic about our offensive line's readiness to start the season.

A part of me wonders why Allen was even risked by playing since all he did was hand the ball off.

First off, great synopsis. Good read and quality thoughts. Thank you!

I think Allen's performance itself showed us precisely why he was out there. He needs to become comfortable operating within the flow of the game. He needs to be able to perform while handing it off 75% of the time. The stupid (and it was) throw across his body provides a teachable moment. The two minute drill TD re-enforces the good and increases confidence.

Whether he's the star or we're grinding it out with the run, he just needs to continue his development with awareness, discipline and readiness. He needed to be in there for game three and benefitted from it.

Honestly, the least of my worries about Allen is how to handle the pass rush.....esp., w/ Beasley, better TE’s and having a year under his belt. I never felt Allen’s issues last season were how he handled pressure but stemmed from the total lack of talent surrounding him.

Oh, I definitely think he suffered from being a bit slow to process and recognize what the defense was doing and therefore, what his best options were. I don't mean that as a negative - he was a rookie who wasn't supposed to be starting yet. This year, I am hoping to see the "time to recognition and decision" be shortened. Teams that bring pressure will test that improvement.

    :) It's all part of...the process.

I like josh allen alot, but i dont not think at this stage of his career he is an advanced enough passer to handle the gregg williams pressure.

This is what I am really excited about seeing in week 1. I'm a big Josh Allen fan. But, until he handles it, he hasn't handled it.

Lee smith is not making the team. Other than the topic of how He’s helping train Sweeney and Knox at the expense of making himself indispensable, I haven’t heard his name all summer. He won’t be here.

I subscribe to neither this, nor the cut Pat DiMarco points of view.

The NFL is not flag football. Along with the John Browns, Cole Beasleys and Shady McCoys of the world, we need people who can knock the bad guys on their backsides. Smith and DiMarco are two of the best at the unglamorous side of football so that others can shine.

This, to me, is a big key to our coming season.

Coming into year two, the biggest improvement areas I have wanted in Josh Allen are:

    - Speed in processing and recognizing defenses. Despite how much fun he was to watch last year, he was slow (no slight intended. - he was a "project" rookie) to see what the defense was doing. This, as much as his rediculous athletecism, contributed to his hero ball style.

    - A willingness to take what is available. I saw too many instances of Allen passing up the open five-yarder, looking for bigger plays.

We're seeing both. His performance, both in practice and games to date, merit great optimism. However, this is against vanilla defenses at preseason speed. When schemed against, when facing multiple and exotic blitzes at full speed, will he be in control? I am hopeful, but we will see.

This is what makes the Jets opener big to me.

Agreed on McCoy, he looks slow and ineffective.

While I want Shady to have a great final season as a Bill, I have to agree here. To date, we have seen nothing from him. Having said that, I understand that he has only had a couple of opportunities so far.

I also am concerned about Hauschka. The comments above about rotating holders and his practice performance are helping to alleviate my anxieties. But, I am concerned.

Finally, our punter battle has not yet revealed a true NFL punter. Come on Cory (either one is fine) step up and take this!

I disagree. I understand this is not a popular thought, but I believe DiMarco is in at fullback. Short yardage situations and getting seven in the red zone are critical. Shady's two yard TD run against Carolina was not an exciting highlight, because it looked so routine. Shady got to the end zone (I believe) untouched. If you look at when he crossed, you'll see DiMarco sealing the right side of the hole, taking out a linebacker. That's the difference between 7 and 3. Not sexy, just winning football.

    Pass #1: 1st and 10

The man route (Jones, Beasely, Sweeny). Allen with a clean pocket, delivers to Beasely on the stick route for 5. The ball was a little behind, but catchable. Good read as he was wide open, solid execution. A better ball may give Beasely a little more room for YAC.

    Pass #2: 2nd and 5

4 man "flood right" concept. It was well covered. Both TE's (Sweeny/Smith) over the middle plus Roberts on the out were not available. Cant see but either Jones or Foster was glued onto by a Panthers defender on the 'go'. Ball again slightly off the mark to an unbalanced McCoy, with the drop. Not a bad decision given the available options.

    Pass #3: 3rd and 5

Empty Set with McCoy out wide to the trips. They rushed 4 and sat in zone but Allen is gifted another clean pocket. Beasely again for 8 yards over the middle on a likely choice route. McCoy open at the sticks as well. Great throw and catch with the ball on the money. Allen is taking what they are giving him at this point. And that aint a bad thing.

    Pass #4: 2nd and 10

Empty set again with this time McCoy in the slot. Dumps the ball off to McCoy after he chips the DE. He also had Sweeney on the out on the other side of the field if he wanted it. This play was nothing fancy, but it was one of my favorite of the game. Allen took what was there on 2nd and long, giving your play-makers the chance to get into a reasonable 3rd down situation.

    Pass #5: 1st and 10

21 Personel after the 1st down run. I love this play. Sweeney runs the flat corner route 20 yards down field. Allen reads the corner, and as soon as he bails deep. Allen delivers a dime perfectly to Sweeney, all while taking a hit in a dirty pocket. A fantastic pass, only where Sweeney could get it. Ford got around the edge here. I think you'll see him at Guard.

    Pass #6: 1st and 10

11 Personel, with Foster/Beasely/Sweeney as your trips. On the broadcast view, you can't see the routes develop, which makes me think that this was going to be a shot down the field to the trips. Unfortunately, again, Ford is beat around the wheel and Allen is forced to scramble to the single receiver side. Not a total loss as far as evaluation is concerned, because it is refreshing to see Allen just dump the ball at Singletary's feet instead of trying to force something here.

    Pass #7: 2nd and 10

Same Personel with Beasely in motion across the formation, coming back for a jailbreak screen for 10 yards. Loved the blocks here by Roberts, Dawkins turning up the field and Spain looking inside out. Shoutout to Feliciano, who snapped the ball and hussled down field 10 yards to dive for a cut block to no avail. Great effort though. Allen puts the ball on the money on time. Wait, DID THE BILLS JUST RUN A SUCCESSFUL SCREEN PASS?!?!?

    Pass #8: 1st and 10

Play action from 11 personel ans McCoy stays in to block. This was a super interesting play call to me. They ran a counter protection, as if they had previously set up the pass with the running game. They pulled Long across the formation towards the play action side, but it was a weak fake and fooled no one. I wonder why Dabol did this. Either way, the pocket collapsed with Long unable to corral his man across the formation and McCoy's man stepping up when Allen scrambles. He wanted Roberts on the single receiver side, but there either wasn't time due to the collapse or it wasn't there.

    Pass #9: 2nd and 11

Empty yet again and yes, you guessed it. Beasley for 6 with a nice little shake route over the middle. Allen had this picked out pre-snap, helping out by delivering the pump fake.Pretty good pocket, with some traffic by Josh's feet (Long getting driven back). He stands tall and delivers a strike.

    Pass #10: 3rd and 5

They really like this 11 personel. It gives them so many options. This was Allen's worst play IMO. Here you see Allen look immediately at the snap to Beasely/Sweeney combo on one side of the field. After two hitches, he continues to look that was with nothing working. I would have liked to see Allen move through his progression a little quicker here. I'm being critical here, because that is what preseason is for. Had he kept going, he would have seen Roberts for the 5 yard pig-tail out standing by himself at the first down marker. To be fair, he may have seen this had Quentin Spain not have been thrown like a rag doll leading to an Allen scramble for a 1 yard gain. That was a fantastic opening drive, but great teams finish, and we stalled out in the RZ.

    SECOND DRIVE

    Pass # 11: 1st and 10

Empty once more, with McCoy to the far boundary which is where Allen goes quickly with the football after a hitch and glance inside. The corner was 10 yards off at the snap. The ball was on the money but there wasn't much there, gaining only 2 yards with no chance at YAC. He could have had Beasely here again if he wanted. Spain again struggling to move his feet in Pass-pro here, allowing his man to swipe right and get into Allen's face. Dawkins, too, needed a stronger power step, allowing penetration inside towards Allen's vision and throwing motion.

    Pass #12: 2nd and 18

Did someone say empty? Fantastic pocket gives Allen three hitches with no traffic near by. He stands tall, looking to Zay on the 10 yard bang route, which he probably could have squeezed in, but ultimately coming back to...you guessed it...Beasely on his money-maker move. A perfect throw give Beasely some room to fall forward. From 2nd and 18 to 3rd and 4 is a play I'll take 11 out of 10 times. This team is not used to being able to bail themselves out of a hole dug by penalties, it's nice to see them able to do this.

    Pass #13: 3rd and 4

Tre tight out of 11 personel with the trips to the boundary. The Panthers show blitz here and end up rushing 4. Ford again allowing his player to run the wheel, getting just enough of him to keep Allen clean.m This is a good thing too, because you get to see an absolute DIME! This is the throw we've been wanting to see. Down the middle on a rope on the money. Allen had Beasely and Jones right by the sticks too but had the confidence to deliver a strike for a large gain on 3rd down. A wow throw...just hang onto the ball, Tommy Boy!

And that is it. 13 pass plays.... 9-11 for 102 yards through the air (one sack, one 1 yard rush - well, essentially a sack IMO). I've been a big Josh critic from the get-go, but I have to say, this game has me feeling real good about what I saw last night and even better after re-watching this morning. I'm wondering where the long shots are, as we haven't seen them take any tries far down the field. But Allen is taking what is there, hitting open receivers and keeping drives alive that lead to 10 points in less than a quarter.

How can you not feel good about this?!

I'm smarter for having read this. Thank you for putting it together!

This, completely. McDermott took on a team two years ago that was famous for 20 years of dysfunction. He, with Beane, has been building and shaping the entire organization into one of thoughtful, forward-looking and strategic precision. I am optimistic about this year and even more excited about our long-term prospects. They're doing this right.

I don't mean to make this about Watkins, but boy do I disagree there.

They didn't have to extend him, all they had to do was pick up his 5th year option, which would've paid him a bit over $10M (totally reasonable considering Tyrell Williams is currently getting $11M). After that, they could've tagged him for 2 straight years.  They basically gave up on him 3 years early, and as a result they've had nothing that resembles a downfield threat at WR for 2 full seasons.

Why would we? By his own admission he was a poor teammate and a bit of a diva. While we were not a good football team at the time, his departure did not cost us. In fact, the trade returns contributed more than his performance did.
