  1. But what good could come out of Perry Fewell sticking for the rest of the season just to be dismissed by the new HC during the offseason?

If they do bring in Shanahan (as a coach only puhleeeeze) or their future HC shortly then my thread is entirely moot. But if they don't, they've squandered an opportunity to move forward and canned a guy for no reason. And considering the ratio of rumor:reality, I'm not sure they've got anything planned right now.

You're correct, your thread is really pre-mature. It also seems somewhat misguided. How can they have a plan to replace a guy they're going to fire? As mentioned, this would be an atrocious plan. If they did contact people for interviews prior to firing Jauron, no candidate of any worth would even interview.

If they did as you suggest, we'd be looking at the high school football coaching ranks for a replacement.

I'm really confused about this " they've squandered an opportunity to move forward" statement. How were they moving forward with Jauron here? They had to fire Jauron to look for his replacement. The utter failure of logic and common sense in your post is rather startling. I'd be interested in a more complete explanation of how they could move forward with Jauron as head coach.

  2. What do you think is meant by 'low maintenance' - is that a direct reference to Snyder meddling, or something else? Depending on perspective - the Bills certainly need a lot of maintenance at this point, no?

I think it's likely meaning the media market, the job seems to come with the authority to clean house (ie not a lot of other people pulling strings or staff being forced on him), the owner *seems* dedicated to win before he passes on, and the Bills being in a good cap situation (Washington has lots of dead money).

If you compare Ralph to Snyder, their levels of interference are not even close. I think Buffalo is a fairly attractive job offer considering what we're seeing at the moment. We'll see if what's being thrown out sticks, but the signs seem to be positive. We'll find out...if Shanny is coming in next week for a meeting, they certainly at least seem to be moving in a hurry to get one of the top guys out there.

I've not been the biggest fan of him over the years, but I feel that Cowher is waiting for a specific job to open up and isn't going to be coming here. If Shanny gets a strong D coordinator, that could be dominating...or at least 1-1 with NE, ya know.

  3. Everything I've heard is that Brandon wasn't *asking* to have to be involved with making football decisions and given the power structure, it's like Guy, Modrak and Overdorf were responsible for the decision. Brando takes the heat since he's at the top, but it seems that given the opportunity, he pushed to bring in a "football" guy

  4. Jeremey... PLEASE...

RWS is NOT a 'money-grubbing' anything - if he was, this city would have lost its NFL team decades ago. The stupid freaking morons that don't comprehend that fact are so oblivious that it's smackin' them on the head with their bottle of Jack-Daniels.

I'd suggest reading more closely. That's why I said, "even if we go down that road".

  5. You may use his "only 1 year" bit as your reasoning, but this guy is not qualified to be an NFL GM.

First off, he came from Baseball. Not high school football. Not college. NOT even an NFL post. He came from an entirely different sport and was hired out of a need for Marketing. Not scouting. Marketing. Big difference.

The TO signing is exhibit 2. As we now see, it was strictly a move to put butts in seats. I think it has more to do with making Toronto ticket sales successful than the team.

Exhibit 3 is MIchael Vick. It reeks of making moves solely based upon gate attraction, and name recognition due to controversy.

That is not a plan, scripted based upon years of experience under a master architect (like AJ Smith, John Butler, and Buddy Nix were under Polian). What is the identity of this team? What is the plan in its draft? What is it building towards?

Schobel's comments this past Sunday are exactly the sentiment. Is there a plan?

'Barnum & Bailey' Brandon's only plan is for gate sizzle. Sell out the stadium, no matter what pile of frosted turd plays on it in a Bills uniform.

We need a proven, winning GM. The other post from Ed Kilgore offers much promise. Brandon has been starting the search for a proven GM.

Brandon may not be as big of a problem as Modrak and Guy, but he is not immune from criticism and worthy to retain his current post.

Are you sure you meant to reply to my post?

  6. I think he's anticipating the day when the Bills can actually get a home game in the playoffs and play meaningful home games in December. As a consequence of the last decade, I think fans have forgotten that these things actually happen.

    Great piece by Lombardi.

The Bills are bad in all weather. Honestly, if that was the point he was making then it's even worse because they need to get players who can make it to the playoffs first.

  7. COO Russ Brandon should be stripped of whatever personnel decision-making responsibilities he currently has, or out the door completely.

What makes you think they were "his" decisions? I see it as more of a...you decided to pee in the office coffee pot. You made the decision, but the boss is responsible for you. The indications are he wants to hire a "football guy" at this point. He seems aware he's not the person who "should be" making such decisions.

    Also, don't forget Jim Overdorf.

  8. I'm glad Brandon is involved in the search. He's not cut out to be GM, but if someone has to pick out next GM, I'd rather it was Russ Brandon's decision rather than Ralph Wilson's.

Russ is a marketing guy and he seems well aware that he's a marketing guy. That may mean he knows the Bills need a proven winner who can turn the football side around to sell the team. It's hard to get a "football guy" to pick another "football guy" to run a team

One line of thought is that even if we we go down the road that Ralph is a money grubbing bast*rd that they team needs to be a solid position when he dies as an organization for him to get top dollar. At this point, they're a budget team in the NFL. A top rate GM and staff would help get some more dollars in the bank when the team is sold.

  9. How great would it be if they brought someone in before the season ended - hovering over the team like some grim reaper - discerning which 30% of the players are worth keeping and calling Modrak and Guy every morning at 6AM "Good morning! What have you done in the last 24 hours to make this team better?????"

    I'd have that guy's children.
