  1. I'd take Dwan over Troup at this point. Dwan Edwards is a solid player who plays consistent football and has shown he can play an entire game. Troup is still young and learning but it is debatable if he is progressing. Dwan will make the team over Troup, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him bumped in to DT some. We won't be a cold-hard 4-3. We will switch.

Despite Troup's injuries, I think youth will win over in this battle. Not that I think Troup is a better player than Edwards, but he was our second round draft pick in 2010. I don't think Buddy is ready to give up on him just yet. Besides, Edwards is a prototypical 3-4 DE. He holds his ground, but I don't see him as a penetrating DT in a 4-3 system.

  2. I will submit our positional needs to DraftTek today, so I looked at the BigBoard, ran a simulation, and got an idea who's currently available in each round. If you don't see a name (like Upshaw), they were picked just before our pick. This will help me determine which positions you'd rather take sooner, and maybe put in a grab for a popular player. -Astro

  3. I think there is a huge "bust rate" on most NFL first rounders, but you're right it seems like there are a lot of 1st round pass rushers that fall flat.

The bottom line is it's hard to find a great one no matter where you pick. Brian Orakpo had only 3.5 more sacks than Marcell Dareus this year, and Clay Matthews only had half a sack more than big 99, and he's obviously not even a pass rusher.

These are guys that are better NFL pass rushers than anyone in this year's draft class. I know sack stats don't tell the whole story, and that pressures or drawing double teams can change the game just as much as a sack, but my point is even when you guess right it doesn't mean you automatically win.

I agree with your approach of picking up 3 pass rushers in the draft. I thought they would take Coples but then I read that although Coples has the most overall talent of any 4-3 defensive end in the class he had a disappointing senior season in which some say he lacked effort and drive on some plays.

At 6'5'' and 281 pounds, he already has an NFL body and is a terrific athlete who can rush the quarterback, play the run well and shed blocks but if he's not motivated as a senior knowing he's going to be a first rounder if he does well, how motivated is he going to be when he gets his $18M guarantee and starts playing on a poorly ranked defense.

I think Nix will pass on this dude, although if Wanny wants to go 4-3 then we might have to roll the dice on him at the 10 pick.....

Terrific, well thought out post, and I agree on all points. I share your concern pertaining to Coples "turning it on" to impress scouts and earn his payday, only to flop after he puts 18 million dollars in the bank. I have heard that Coples was frequently played out of position this year at UNC (played a lot of 4-3 DT), so I am hoping that this was the reason for the drop off in production.

  4. I'd be delighted with Melvin Ingram, Nick Perry, Quinton Coples, or Whitney Mercilus. Any of these guys would be an immediate starter for us. While Ingram and Coples have improved their draft standing during Senior Bowl week, I suspect that Nick Perry will be a household name after the combine.

One of these guys has to be the pick at #10 IMO.

    1st Coples DE/OLB

    2nd Mercilus OLB

That would be a pretty decent start in my opinion. Our defenses is our biggest problem. People need to stop whining about Fitz and focus on our real problems.

That would be incredible, but I highly doubt Mercilus will make it to the 2nd round. I actually question whether or not he will make it to #10. Vinny Curry, DE/OLB from Marshall would be a great pick in round 2.

  5. Some observations of Glenn during Wednesday's practice...

-Cordy Glenn just manhandled Quinton Coples in one-on-one. Glenn was lined up at left tackle. Not to be outdone, Coples threw an inside move on Glenn the next time they faced off and beat him to the inside.

-OL Cordy Glenn of Georgia has been the talk of the South by a lot of scouts. He's got the body type, strength and movement skills to quickly start in the NFL. He's being talked about as a late-round pick with his performance the past two days. He does not back down either, and just went after Quinton Coples in drills, battling hard after the whistle had blown.

  6. Gil Brandt thinks Tannehill will go in the top 10. Would you be mad if the Bills took him and let him sit behind Fitz for a couple years?

Mad? Shocked and appalled would probably be a more appropriate description. Tannehill is talented, but he is raw and still needs time to learn how to be an NFL QB. While he possesses all the physical attributes needed to be successful, I seriously question the "mental aspect" of his skill set. With all of our needs this offseason, we can't afford to use the #10 pick on a guys who is going to sit on the bench. Some teams have that luxury, IMO we do not at this time.

I'd prefer we hold off and take a developmental QB like Nick Foles in the 4th round.

  7. He does the same 40 time as LaMarr Woodley.

40 time (straight line speed) is not always the best indicator of "game speed."

In response to the OP, I think guys like Mercilus and Perry are far more versatile that Upshaw. Upshaw is a hell of a football player, and I'd be happy to see him in a Bills uniform, but I don't think he could play both 4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB. I think Mercilus and Perry could do that.

It says that the Phins are likely going to a 4-3 and Soliai will likely be allowed to walk in FA. If we are staying with a 3-4 he would be an excellent pickup and allow us to have Williams and Dareus as DE's.

Yes, yes, yes......Soliai would e a tremendous pick up for us. Give us that true space-eating, run stuffing NT that we have been missing. IMO...having Williams or Dareus at NT in 3-4 alignments is a waste of talent. Not saying that Dareus played poorly at NT, but he would be much better as a 3-4 DE or a 4-3 DT.

  9. 1? 1 decent player in the whole NFL is from Penn State and that is the school we should draft from? There are over 275 players in the NFL and only 1 is from Penn State and that is our choice? No Thanks.

Navarro Bowman, Levi Brown, Dan Connor, Tamba Hali, Sean Lee, Jared Odrick, Paul Posluszny, Andrew Quarless, BRYAN SCOTT, Cameron Wake.....just to name a few

  10. Reiff is going to be an All-Pro as will Kalil and Adams. Too bad we won't see Upshaw at our pick, but we'll see him twice a year. You can read what I said about Reiff here.

    Astro

Really....and how do you know this? IMO...Kalil is the only OT worth taking in the top 10, and he will obviously be long gone by #10. Reiff is an impressive OT prospect, but he is not without weaknesses. He appears to be excellent at run blocking, and seems to do a decent job protecting the edge against speed rushers. I question his footwork, however, as he seems to have trouble pass blocking when the rusher makes a move to the inside. Not saying that technique issues such as this cannot be corrected, but declaring Reiff an all-pro? I think that's a bit of a leap.

  11. There are other WR's I'd take in the 2nd round before McNutt, namely Dwight Jones and Nick Toon. Toon is a much more polished WR than is McNutt, and IMO Jones has the highest ceiling of any WR in this draft class. Now, if we waited until the 3rd round to address WR and McNutt was still on the board, I would be happy with the selection.

  12. After watching last night's game, I'm having a hard time deciding who would be the better LB for us....Upshaw or Hightower. Upshaw is strong and has good instincts. He is a very good linebacker, but looked a little bit slow at times. He doesn't have the quickest first step, which leads me to suspect that he might have trouble making the transition to 4-3 DE.

Hightower, however, always seems like he has been shot out of a cannon. He plays with a level of intensity that is remarkable and fun to watch. He seems to be faster than Upshaw, is always around the ball, and is a GREAT tackler. I could definitely see him being a more versatile player for us, being able to play inside or outside in the 4-3. I also think he could potentially play outside in the 3-4.

    What wonderful options to have....

  13. I agree with a previous poster in that you're free agency "wish list" is a little far fetched. I can realistically see the Bills re-signing Stevie, Bell, and Chandler. I also could see them making one "splashy" move by bringing in a high profile FA like Vincent Jackson or Dwayne Bowe. I would be happy with one of those guys, and some of the other alternative players like Anthony Spencer and/or Cortland Finnegan.

I like your first two draft selections, particularly Sanu in the 2nd round (although I think he will go in the late 1st). I could see us taking Upshaw, but I could also see us taking the Iowa LT Reiff with the #10 selection. This pick, of course, will be highly contingent on what we do in free agency. Not a huge fan of Nate Potter in the 3rd round. If we were to look at tackles in the 3rd round range, I would much rather see a guy like Levy Adcock or Andrew Datko (if he falls that far). These guys are bigger and stronger than Potter, and would fit better with what Buddy and Chan seem to prefer with their offensive linemen (big nasties). Finally, I would rather take a stab at a QB like Kirk Cousins in the 4th or 5th round. I don't hate the idea of drafting Wilson, but I see Cousins as being a better developmental prospect. Plus, he has that big arm that we all have been waiting for.
