The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Magox replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The idea that "different racial groups" would get a Covid-19 vaccine first was a new one on me. I found it hard to imagine this idea. Would blacks, who have reportedly been hard-hit by the disease, get vaccinated first on the grounds that they are more vulnerable? Or could such an approach be part of a reparations scheme, a way of compensating for racism and slavery? Ta-Nehesi Coates, call your office. Perhaps the fear is that without explicit racial preferences or race-based affirmative action in vaccine distribution, whites will have preferential access to the vaccine by default, consistent with what research has found to be their overall better access to preventative medical treatment. It would be nice to see Vice President Biden pinned down on this issue in a future interview. "Mr. Vice President, do you favor a policy of deliberately giving members of some racial groups an earlier spot in line than others when it comes to administering a vaccine for the coronavirus?" More at the link: https://www.futureofcapitalism.com/2020/05/race-based-distribution-of-covid-19-vaccine African Americans are disproportionately affected not because of genetics but rather socioeconomics And the outcomes that they produce and culture. If there were to be a pecking order it would first have to go to frontline medical workers and the elderly. I think somewhere high up on the pecking order could be in lower income communities: That would make sense -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

Cases are rising only because Texas has increased testing by 60% over the past week. Actual cases are likely falling as the positivity test rate is declining . Don’t fall for the media trap And to your 2nd point. Ready for what? You either believe in the data or you don’t. And the data tells us that the vast majority of the population are at no more risk of COVID 19 than the common flu. That’s what the data shows us. The solution is clear, give the necessary equipment and testing that the frontline workers need and pull out all the stops to protect the most vulnerable. Aside from that, practice basic common sense social distancing and let’s get this show on the road. This notion that we have to keep infections at a minimum while crushing the economy is simply put, stupid and illogical. As a society we just need to accept that the virus is with us and there will be lots of infections and you know what? We are going to be ok provided the government doesn’t compound the problem with these nonsensical extreme stay-at-home orders. -

The data on all fronts continue to keep getting better week over week. Some data points slower than others. Deaths are stubbornly improving. -

I know Nate Silver didn't write that but he's an honest guy and he's all about the numbers. No doubt that he is a lefty but he's not a hack and he's been in his own way criticizing those in the media who are sensationalizing out-of-context top line numbers to depict things worse than they are. -

I could be wrong and if there ends up being outbreaks in many places where it’s not just biased media reporting but actually happening then things change. But I don’t see that happening and I just happen to think that Democrats are being fooled by these polls. The ones where poll questions are provided in binary terms that lack the proper nuance of how people feel about going to work now or coming back “too soon”. It’s a false dichotomy. Of course if only given two options most will defer to the side of caution. But what’s really at the heart of it is that it’s become political. Orange man says we should get to work so the left and their allies in the media take the opposing position. The support for keeping things closed That show up in the polls is a paper tiger. The support to get back to work is real, these people are hurting, they are foot soldiers and they will show up at the polls. The CA special election was not a fluke. The question for me is when will Dems realize this is a losing hand? And they need to act soon on this because if they become Johnny come lately’s then they will be viewed as following Trump’s lead. I’m not sure how they get out of this aside from having bad outbreaks in the fall. And it’s hard not believing that in a sense they want that, why else have Katz who is a democratic operative lawyer and the Dems today people him up speaking of potential impending doom later on this year? -

The anger is real. The polls may say one thing but the energy is definitely on the get to work crowd. This for me is a tea party 2 sort of a movement that is bubbling. -

Guidelines are just that. Guidelines. In other words they aren't dictates but rather advice, principles and a general rule. I think what Dr. Birx would tell you that what is more important that they are following the general essence of their guidelines as opposed to following it to a tee. Every single state to my knowledge is in close consult with the Task Force and often times when I see that some of the states that didn't meet the specific goals of the guidelines when asked about them in front of Dr. Birx, she pretty much always states that she's been in communication with them, has seen their data and approves of what they are doing. Let's not get carried away with meeting the specifics as opposed to generally complying with the spirit of the guidelines.
