  1. Ask Fitz. l'd be willing to bet the Jets would have jumped at this deal months ago. Why wouldn't they?

The Jets wouldn't (and didn't) jump at 1 year, 12M months ago because they didn't have the cap space.

They still don't, but with Wilkerson signed they were close enough to see how to make it work

Fitz actually turned down more guaranteed money ($16M guaranteed in the Jets offer) in order not to be locked in to a 3 year deal at a bargain rate for the next 2 years. Which is sort of the opposite of what folks were saying at one point (that the Jets wanted 1 year and Fitz wanted several). Got to hand it to him, he has confidence in himself.

  2. @johnkryk

At #Patriots camp today, ex-#Bills WR Chris Hogan told me why he wanted out, & needed to get out, of Buffalo

    http://m.torontosun.com/2016/07/28/new-patriots-receiver-chris-hogan-on-why-he-wanted-out-of-buffalo

Basically "they offered me peanuts 'cuz I couldn't beat out their guys, so I went some place that paid me"?

I thought the quote about "I kind of got a little complacent about where I was, this has been a rebirth of me as a football player" was interesting combined with all the comments about how "demanding" Brady, Garrapolo, and McDaniels are. Players get "complacent" when they're allowed to be complacent. The implication would be the standards in Buffalo were not as high.

    Good luck to him

  3. He was kind of horrid last year, right? Still better than EJ? Didn't watch much Rams football in 2015, shockingly

Welp, then. That's $7M of roster and signing bonus the Rams will never see again.

I don't think he was better than EJ, but then I have a calmer perspective on EJ than many here. I did watch Rams football, and they just kind of generally sucked last year.

I didn't think Keenum looked that clearly better than Foles, and it seems strange (given the large amount of dead money they have tied up in him) that they wouldn't hang on to him through camp.

Where's the room for him on the roster with EJ's money guaranteed for 2016?

More important, if we intend to give Cardale Jones any kind of an opportunity, where are the reps for him?

  4. He's going to get hurt. He's not built like Cam Newton. He needs to run 4 or 5 times a game, max, if he's going to last in the league.

DANGERuss Wilson sends his regards. He's not built like Cam Newton either. So far, so good.

20 passing TD's is below the league average. I believe the league average is 26, so Tyrod and the receivers will need to improve.

If you're looking for league average, that's over 16 games which would correct to 23 TD for TT in a 16 game schedule.

Still "below average" but not as far.

  5. As Rice says, if it was about talent, he'd get tryouts and then not get signed. He's only 29 but nobody looks at the guy because of the PR ramifications.

    From USA Today:

A permanent indent at the top of Rice’s left quadriceps is evidence of what he says was the primary reason he averaged a career-low 3.1 yards on 214 carries in 2013: a Grade 3 muscle tear. Now healthy, Rice says his mind is clear and his body more explosive than ever – if only someone would give him a chance to show it.

“Put it like this: I don’t know when the years of ranking where I was a top-15 NFL player, but you don’t fall off that fast,” Rice says. “If I’m that bad, bring me in for a tryout. That’s the way to go about it. Bring me in for a tryout and then let the rest of the chips fall where they belong, because we know the simple fact that I can’t get a tryout – it’s a different deal.”

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2016/07/22/ray-rice-comeback-domestic-violence/87410486/?hootPostID=1afac7504c6914b4126f8825deea9e28

OK, I take back some of what I said.

“Ray has taken a number of positive steps, including meeting with domestic violence organizations and seeking ongoing and continuous counsel for he and his family,” Anna Isaacson, the NFL’s vice president of social responsibility, said in a statement. “He has demonstrated a desire over the last two years to share how his choices have impacted him so that others, particularly youth, may learn from it.”

When Rice visits college football teams, he tells his life story, including the lack of communication and failure to deal with issues leading up to an incident that, for many, put a face to domestic violence.

“The black-and-white elevator video – I don’t think any of us will get that out of our head. And he’s paying the price for that,” said Western Michigan University coach P.J. Fleck, who was among the first to invite Rice to speak. “But while he’s paying the price, we can use him to educate our players so we can be very preventative (with) our kids.”

If he is truly committed to continuing counseling, the chance that he will not be a repeat offender is better. Domestic violence programs are notorious for not working - but a large part of that is the high drop-out rate, in excess of 50%. If someone is committed to an ongoing program, the success rate is higher. Even more for couples counseling.

That said, I'm sure the overall success rate for DV (bad) is part of what's going on here.

The other part is Ray's dismal performance last time he played. Teams are willing to risk bad PR for what they see as a potential high-reward player. Teams aren't willing to risk bad PR for a guy they might otherwise kick the tires on (this was pointed out with Michael Sam - that he was at a skill level where other players get called in for tryouts when injuries strike - a bubble player - but who wants to bring in a media circus for a bubble guy no better and no worse than a dozen others when you can skip the circus and get something similar.

Still, if he has enough PR behind him and puts together a good audition tape for his agent to send out, I bet sooner or later someone will take a look, possibly after the first day of the season if the injury bug has bitten

  6. Which one is the Kool aid? They all look like legitimate reasons.

    #7 and #9

#7 - if we have Harvin's replacement, who is he? Marquise Goodwin has been Harvin-like only in his ability to be injured and stay off the field. Kolby Listenbee is an unpolished 6th round rookie. I would like to see Dez Lewis take a step, and hope he will. I think the best that can be said is "we hope between Dez Lewis, Listenbee, Goodwin, and any FA pickups, we might have Harvin's replacement". Anything more has that little smiley jug with the ice cubes running about.

#9 - it's great that we have Cog, Glenn, and Woods returning, but the question mark last year was the right side of the line. With his return from serious off season surgery and a chronic disease to manage, it's unclear that Henderson will be ready to go - this season? ever? Can his body stand the rigors of football with Crohn's? It's such a variable disease, TBD! That leaves it up to Kujo (disappointment so far) and Jordan Mills (who was a 5th round pick and in 4 years, has done nothing to make people forget that.) To avoid Koolaid, the RT spot has to be marked down as a question mark. We hope that Miller will take a step, but that's a hope, not a given. Again, have to mark RG down as a question mark. So to put the line returning as a reason a kool-aid

  7.

I totally believe in forgiveness as well but he could be noble without playing football. So if we're just talking football - I think he should absolutely be able to play and it's sad that he'd have to give up his salary to do so. He shouldn't have to as you say - they and we have welcomed back much worse people.

This is kind of where I am. He's a wealthy man. If he wants to do good and champion organizations that work against DV, he can and should do so. He could become a public speaker against it. To say he'll donate his salary seems kind of like trying to bribe his way onto a team. Walk the walk first if you mean it.

I don't think it's going to work. I agree with others who said if he were still good as a RB he wouldn't still be looking for work. People look at the film of his last season and say "meh". If he's marginal, teams are going to stay away from the distraction, even if it's a "positive" distraction of making a DV donation.

  8. What opposing team player have you most respected for their on the field performance against the Bills? What did this player do to earn your respect? (If it was a one game situation did the Bills win or lose and how did the game outcome impact your thoughts?)

That would be JJ Watt. He's just generally a player for another team I deeply respect. Even when his team is losing you can see it in his face and his body he is giving it everything he got, and if he could single-handedly will the Texans to victory he would.

He's a player I feel really bad for that he's not on a better team.

  9. I'm not sure why everyone is panicking about or running back stuation..am I missing something?Shady,Jonathan Williams,Gillislee is a good start with Karlos coming back after he gets his crap together.J Williams won't be suspended for more than two games and that won't be till 2017 and Gilleslee looked really good the games he played at the end of the season. Why do people seem to be in panic mode here what am I missing?

Unsure. I think folks might be worried about Roman's run-first plans combined with Shady's durability during preseason and those 1st 4 games when Karlos is suspended? Shady-Gilleslee should make a nice 1-2 punch, but if Shady goes down then we're into the "undiscovered country" at our key offensive position. I'm completely unexcited about Boom Herron. Jonathan Williams may have something. James Wilder Jr may have something, but he hasn't shown it yet in the NFL. If J Williams and J. Wilder look good in training camp people will relax, I think.

    that was Darius

Negative, you're correct that Darius was caught drag racing in B'lo, but I'm talking about Jackson and Lynch in Seattle:

    http://thebiglead.com/2015/10/20/report-fred-jackson-crashes-car-while-drag-racing-marshawn-lynch-near-practice-facility/

    Or maybe not:

    http://www.syracuse.com/buffalo-bills/index.ssf/2015/10/fred_jackson_i_wasnt_drag_racing_marshawn_lynch_when_i_crashed_my_car.html

Being Seattle and everyone in Blue wanting the Seasnakes to whump the '49ers as much as the next guys, the incident quickly went away.

  10. The Q's are:

    • is he a running threat (no)
    • does he have something to contribute in special play situations (maybe)
    • is his football production worth the Vet minimum 900K-ish (no)
    • is his leadership worth the Vet minimum 900K-ish (no.. that's one expensive luxury)
    • will the Vet minimum hurt the cap situation (vice a newbie with $500K-ish contract)
    • would he accept the Vet minimum (probably)
    • is giving one of the precious 55 roster slots to someone with no future upside wise (no) **
    • did you answer these question without the beer goggles of nostalgia (me.. yes)

** this is an under-rated concern, many people don't realize the long term damage done when you hang on to declining talent at the expense of denying new talent an opportunity to grow.

Different angle, Fred as coach: I don't know if he is entry level coach material. Does he have a mind for X's and O's? Does he know how to teach?

This is a really thoughtful and thorough analysis. Thanks. My only quibble is the roster is 53 man, not 55.

You are spot on: people don't understand the importance of filling those 53 spots with players who have potential to grow, or who can contribute in several phases of the game.

  11. its my belief there is a cure for cancer but only the elite get it.

Craig Sager is elite, David Bowie is not elite?

Bowie was not elite ? well, my guess would be because he wanted to write his own music and have power over his own career.

his music showed individuality and not over produced crap

Erm, Vince, I think Commonsense was speaking to your belief "there's a cure for cancer but only the elite get it": David Bowie died from cancer not too long ago. Liver cancer, this past winter IIRC. So apparently some of the "elite" haven't gotten the news.....how elite ya gotta be? Wealth and worldwide fame don't suffice?

There is no conspiracy to hide a cure for cancer from all but the "elite". The problem is that cancer isn't a single disease. It's a bunch of different mutations in different genes leading to "cells gone wild" in different organs and with somewhat different behavior. Pharmacologically, it's a very tough target because cancer cells are very little different from your own cells, and there's not much that will kill them that won't kill the cells you need to survive. And when there is something that will kill them, because they're dividing out of control cancer cells are in a far better position to mutate again and become resistant.

Wealthy people have longer post-diagnosis survival because they get diagnosed earlier (typically) and they can afford the best care and don't have to battle both the disease and their insurance companies to obtain care, but ultimately they die too.

    Cancer is a douche.

Sorry to veer off topic, this is important to me that people understand. Support basic research, and support cancer research. It's the only path to a solution (and no, I'm not currently a cancer researcher)

  12. Same. Is this:

    1. an arraignment hearing?

    2. the set of Judge Judy?

    3. an anti-Jim Everett vs Jim Rome setup?

Cowherd relies on 3 feet of wood and 10 feet of distance so that he can make it off the stage if somebody comes after him. It's like a deterrent: "don't come after me because you'll never catch me!"

The picture of that set belies 10,000 words from Cowherd.

Ha, ha, I had the same thought! Did you notice Cowherd made a point of saying he "works out every day"?

  13. I like your insight jeremy.

This may just bleed/trickle into everyday c'mon man life too.

Much like the space program and Tang

All respect 3rdand12, but isn't talking about "trickling" in the context of guy's pants kind of....gross?

they still haven't signed their first round draft pick. After that they will have $6.76M in Top 51 cap space, per Spotrac.

I missed that! I have thought all along that the lack of negotiation with Fitz may have less to do with any "hard valuation" placed on Fitz and more to do with the Jets crappy cap situation.

  14. AW was his little bro, so obviously biased.

I think the Whaley bridge was burned by Fred when Fred left, so this is a moot point.

    Yep, bridge-burnin' words were uttered.

The Seahawks wanted Fred for a specialized niche role (blitz pickup) and when he needed to get yardage, you could see the frustration on his face when he would get tackled from behind on plays he knew he could break (or at least make the 1st down) 2-3 years ago. Roman likes to have tight ends in that blitz pickup/6 lineman role, and Fred is not a good "match" for the gap left by Karlos.

Now if the Bills wanted to offer FredEx a 1-day contract so he could "retire a Bill", that would be a total class gesture on both sides and I'd be "IN" with that.

    LMAO

Due to crap planning and Shady's injury, we're now in revolving-door-of-has-been-RBs mode.

WTH, Jackson's as good as any of the other retreads that have been rumored.

Instead of taking a complete waste of Cardale Jones in the 4th maybe they should have taken Paul Perkins instead, who would have been a perfect fit for this offense, particularly considering the lack of decent WRs on the team. That would have taken vision and planning skills however, clearly we don't have any of those.

Have you considered Taking Up Golf (TUG)?

I get it that years of playoff drought and mediocre play have left the Bills coaches and FO open to criticism, and there are legitimate areas for criticism, but this repetitive, knee-jerk sweeping negativity has gotten way old.

  15. I think it's a running back thing! The league is going to run out of running backs soon.

Seriously? And a person who was in the car at the time was unaware of the "assault"? We don't know the facts (and probably never will) but we DO know that when you come into some money a lot of people will want a piece of it.

red mark on her wrist?????? come on...

I obviously dont advocate dudes ever touching women in any harming way...but seriously? he grabbed her wrist and she sees an opportunity to try to get some of his money because he is now a celebrity and is off to bigger and better things (and women)?? gimmie a break

Welp now. On the one hand, it never ever ever happens that witnesses to some form of violence "didn't see anything" because their self-interest rolls that way, or because of the lure of hangin' with celebrity. <<<<<<<<Sar Chasm So it's not intrinsically unreasonable and shouldn't be cause to label this a "money grab" immediately.

Of more significance to the report IMO is that the alleged victim "refused medical treatment". If you are assaulted or want people to take seriously any claim you were assaulted, why would you not want to go to a medical facility and obtain documentation of any injuries, including internal injuries not visible to the eye? I understand why rape victims sometimes hesitate - a post-rape exam is painful and humiliating to the extent that even with a sympathetic examiner, it's been described by some as "a second assault". But no one has suffered pain or humiliation by having their wrist x-rayed and examined by an MD (that I know of), whereas any sort of case is essentially dead in the water if you don't.

This really, IMO, should not have been a media story at this point - just because of the alleged victim refusing a medical exam or treatment.

  16.

Fitzy's on the Karlos offseason training regimen

Another picture from the side shows he isn't suffering from serious "Dunlap Disease" but he does still look pudgy to me. The wrinkle pattern in slacks is characteristic of pants purchased when the wearer was a few pounds lighter, and there seems to be a bit of a pocket gap. I would say he's been laying into some stress eating and lightening up on the workouts a bit. Maybe 5 lbs, maybe as much as 15 lbs.

  17. @TheHerd

.@68INCOGNITO calls out @ColinCowherd for bashing the @buffalobills and Rex Ryan. #TheHerd

That was awesome! Gives me good understanding of why Whales and Rex were confident in bringing RI to the Bills. The part about how it took months for him to get to "there was a problem, and I was part of the problem, own it, learn from it, move on" - that's legit. That's a guy who's "done my therapy and I'm a better man for it" as a friend of mine used to say.

That is one awkward and awful studio set up

Richie has great stage presence and is very articulate and yeah, he is a good-looking guy

Did anyone else get a gander at his twitter where he says he likes to fix antique lamps and solve complex math equations when he's not "shoving guys for a living"?

  18.

Ok, lets put an end to that right now...MARIO cut MARIO. His contract was so big we would have had to not resign other key players to keep him. And you don't choose an aging 31 year old DE who very obviously mailed it in last season, took plays off, and generally wouldn't buy into the scheme because he disagreed with it.

Hes a 31 year old DE making ridiculous money coming off a season where he basically quit on the scheme and the team. He made that a VERY easy choice to cut him, especially with guys like Glenn, Gilmore, Incognito, and Taylor needed and deserving new contracts.

And none of that has anything to do with Shaq, his surgery, or draft slot. Mario played himself off this team, plain and simple...and I was his biggest fan and now need to buy a new jersey for this season again.

Alphadawg, while you're right that Mario made cutting him an easy and (due to salary cap) necessary choice....The fact is, cutting him left a hole for "edge rusher".

That very much has something to do with Shaq, his surgery, and his draft slot. Teams expect their draft choices in the first 2 rounds to be able to step up and contribute immediately. Teams talk about "best player available" but magically, the "best player available" on their draft board is usually a position where the team has a need. There's also a factor of "return on investment", since it's getting the most years out of quality players on their rookie contracts which enables teams to resign or sign a few high-price stars.

So in drafting a potential high-quality edge rusher who, as it turns out, is going to sit out at least half his rookie season, the Bills are losing both 1/8 or so of is ROI potential as well as failing to improve at the "edge rusher" hole left by cutting Mario. Mario, when he gave a schitt, was a star. Manny Lawson is a lunchbucket player. For folks to mention him as our plan to replace Mario/Shaq Lawson is head scratching strange.

So for the Bills to draft a player who was
