  1.

And who let Donald Trump's tanning salon determine the color of NBA basketballs?

Now this was objectively funny! And it d*mn near cost me a keyboard

While I disapprove of what that asshat said and did, I will defend to the death the asshat's right to say it

Freedom of asshattery is an inherent Constitutional right, without which the Internet would not be the place we all know and love today

    Well said

I don't think it's about the national anthem. He's just warming up for his game time position.

    Well played, sir!

  2.

Urp. Is that OL-bashing then? Throwing Kromer under the bus as the OL coach? Or what is it? I mean, we need to play people to get ready for the season, no? And if it's our starting QB, the current available starting OL needs to be able to protect him, or do we think the OL starters will go through the season uninjured?

  3. No, only in Buffalo do fans think sucky QBs are actually good and starting material. The rest of the NFLs knowledgeable decision making people have historically disagreed, Edwards, Losman, Fitz, Bledsoe etc. EJ is part of that group. EJ might latch on somewhere for a year or 2, I doubt it though, then wash out. He stinks, this love affair with him is ridiculous.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to single you out, Old School, but what I find ridiculous is how some posters seem to have no ability to perceive or accept a moderate or middle-of-road viewpoint. No one here is arguing that EJ is starting material. We're just saying he's improved compared to previous years and he did some good things last night in a tough situation - with crappy OL protection, a center who wasn't snapping cleanly, and backup WR dropping catchable balls.

Why does it have to be so polarized, he either stinks/sucks completely or else people think he's a great QB and have a "love affair" with him? What about neither of the above? He doesn't suck and he didn't stink up the joint last night, neither is he great or good. He is looking as though he might be a competent backup for us, which is all good.

You are the EJ of spelling. Mostly competent with a few glaring, inexcusable misses.

Now that is an analogy that speaks to me.

  4. He was not prepared to call the game. No prep whatsoever. His way of identifying Bills players was by saying something like this- He made that Bills defender miss or the Bills LB makes the stop. Are you kidding me Bush league effort. I was praying for Lawrence Taylor to storm the broadcast booth.

Pretty inexcusable in the age of the wireless tablet where it takes seconds to go to the Bills website, bring up the roster, and sort it by number, isn't it?

I grant he'd have had to go a bit further, like finding a pre-season depth chart or a roster from last year, to see that when he was puckering up and extolling Cousins, Cousins and the 1st string Redskins O were playing against B'lo bubble-guys and 2nd or 3rd stringers.

  5. Get the !@#$ out then Colin you pos.....you always respect your country's anthem no matter what your view points....

A country that has provided him millions of dollars to sling a football in which he basically sucks at

Let's get it straight. It's not the country that's provided him with this opportunity, it's a commercial enterprise called NFL Football. And one of the things that flag and anthem symbolize, is his enduring right to speak his mind freely, provided he doesn't endanger anyone else by so doing. Kind of ironic, ultimately, but people who set out to make grand empty gestures are usually not perceptive to irony.

  6. I've never really understood it either.

The part I appreciate is the games where they honor a veteran, that's a cool tradition thanking someone specifically for what they've done.

But I don't really get the national anthem.

True Story from the Life of Hopeful.

When our baby was just shy of 9 months old and baby/mom more or less recovered from various complications, the Hopeful family made a decision to finally have a date night, sans baby, to celebrate my birthday. We went all out: reservations to a trendy restaurant for dinner; excellent tickets to see STOMP!, the familiar caregiver from her excellent daycare as a very well-paid babysitter.

    That was September 11, 2000.

After discussion and some phone calls to the restaurant and the venue, we decided to proceed with the planned evening. We figured what the terrorists are after is getting in everyone's head and disrupting normal life, so if we stay home, they win that small victory. So off we went. The restaurant was out of flown-in stuff, like fresh fish, but otherwise good.

I don't know if STOMP always starts that way, but just before the starting time, the venue went pitch black, even the small aisle lights. Into the darkness came the sound of a lone bugle, playing our National Anthem. At the crescendo, three spotlights lit up our flag. I guarantee there wasn't a dry eye in the house that night.

That's how I "get" our flag and our national anthem - as an enduring symbol that our nation, flaws and warts and stumbles and tragedies, is fundamentally strong and good and will continue and evolve.

  7. Actually, I felt that was one thing he did well last night.

The OL was atrocious (looking at you, Ryan Groy and Fernando Velasco), and I'm usually not a "blame the OL" guy.

Cordy needs to be on the field week 1 or we're in real trouble

Oh, yeah, that was another thing I thought EJ did well, handle snaps that varied from just slightly off to horrid, consistently inconsistent. And yes, EJ was night-and-day better at sensing the pass rush and buying time or running.

I think it's been tremendously helpful to EJ's development not to have the pressure of "you da man" hanging over him. He's not the best QB on the roster, he's not contending for the starting job, he knows it, he may not like it but it's freed him to just work on his game.

  8. You try so hard to root for the kid. I was hoping another year in Greg Roman's system he would show some improvement. Still has that deer in the headlights reaction. I would have like to seen more production against 2nd and 3rd stringers.

Funny how different people can watch the same action and see differently. I was thinking that EJ just looked night-and-day different from when he played 3 years ago, in all aspects of the game. That stupid predictable evasion spin move was gone, replaced by some real pocket awareness and evasiveness. He looked comfortable and in charge. You could tell he was going through his reads even though his OL sucked and he was playing "run for your life" frequently. Some of his throws were off, but some were right-on and not his fault they were dropped or fumbled. Others were off-target but catchable to a better WR.

I thought the offensive PI call on Little was BS and without it, we win.

this loss was on the ****ty tackling in the first half

Oh, Indeed. I could not believe the missed tackles from guys who aspire to be part of a pro football roster. I grant these guys aren't our first string but they looked like the Keystone Cops out there

  9. I do remember reading that one of his surgeries was to reattach his rectum. I don't remember where I read that. But, we do know that a section of his colon was removed, right? That means that however large that section of colon was, it was damaged enough by the disease to have to be removed. That's pretty serious. And, agains, Crohn's is a chronic disease. Henderson is not cured. His disease is in remission.

I think there is a pattern with Bills fans, in their habitual tendency to root for the underdog, to remember Henderson as being much better than he actually was. If he really is 100%, maybe he's worth the risk. But, even at 100%, it is a risk.

I feel bad saying it, but roster spots are awfully valuable.

You're right that one surgery was to reattach his colon to his rectum, but that doesn't mean the disease detached it (that would be highly unusual, and quite probably fatal due to peritoneal contamination). The surgeon did the detaching, and later the re-attaching. This is actually SOP for many intestinal resections (chop-out of damaged, cancerous, or diseased sections) in order to let the surgery heal-up before food.

You're also right that it's a chronic disease, but it's highly variable, some guys have played football with it and had long careers. Once it's under control, some can keep it that way, some can't. Some can manage it with relatively straightforward medications, others need regular IV treatment with medications that have more serious side effects. We just don't know.

I don't think I remember Henderson as "better than he was". I thought he was promising as a rookie and fell off last year, which may well have been the Crohn's battle. If I could beam in a prototype great RT would I cut Henderson if I held the scissors? Absolutely But we have Mills (injured with undisclosed knee injury), Henderson, and Kujo competing for that spot.

My point is they're going to consider Henderson relative to the demonstrated ability of the other guys they have on the roster right now, not worry about his long-term prognosis and what might happen. And the other guys on the roster, not looking like great options.

  10. I just don't believe the rosy picture being painted regarding his recovery. Being an OT is dependent on using all of one's core muscles, on having size, and inertia, and mid-body mobility. I just don't see how someone can have a big piece of their colon removed as a result of Crohn's Disease, in which one of the symptoms was his colon detaching from his rectum (!!! !!!), requiring two surgeries, and bounce back as a Right Tackle, to 100% in under a year.

And, let us not forget that football is, above all else, a business. Crohn's is chronic, and Henderson wasn't ever exactly a stud RT in the first place. There are no guarantees that his condition won't recur. As a player, is he worth that risk?

What is your source on "colon detaching from his rectum"? I have not seen that in any report. It's quite common, on the other hand, to direct output to an ostomy bag temporarily after colon surgery, then redirect after healing is complete.

He may be ready, he may not be ready - you have a very valid point about the timeline for recovery after major abdominal surgery, but I don't believe they will cut him due to what might happen in the future. I mean, following that logic, Aaron Williams should definitely go out the door, and heck, any player with an injury - cut 'em all! If he's not ready, I would think they'd IR him.

  11. theres no way they cut a medically cleared guy out of worry for his next injury.

I dunno about "worry for his next injury",but what if they feel he's been overtaken on the depth chart by guys who are less of a long-term injury concern?

    Dray, Henderson, Robey-Coleman, Gay.

    And, we make the playoffs.

    Word.

Henderson as in Seantrel? Why ever?

  12. I dunno. Maybe Rob Ryan gets a cut on his finger from exuberant use of a steak knife at the training table? Overdorf gets a paper cut while signing checks?

    Unexpected = neither of those.

Though I do feel your meaning for "training table" requires a bit of exploration - you WERE talking about the table where they spread out food during training camp, and not the table where the athletes go to get taped up etc?

I think it was Karlos. I thought he'd hang on because of his production last year.

I did too, especially since he doesn't count against the roster until 5 weeks in. A lot can happen in 4 weeks: injuries, guys who looked great in preseason vanishing, trade partners emerge etc.

  13. Fwiw- not a huge surprise, but I think Velasco is a goner and he was an FA signing. O'leary probably cut too. Don't think anyone of great noteriety goes with the possible exception of Felton.

I certainly would not be relaxed if Wood went down and we were starting Velasco at center. Atlanta should pick him up, he might be an improvement there!

I think they had high hopes for O'Leary, but you could be right.

Unless he looks good tonight, I think Dez Lewis is gone.

Baby Gronk seems to be a "home town favorite" but despite Rex giving him the good word, I don't think he stays - not sure that's a surprise though.

We already had the one on offense...Karlos

True dat, to me at least.

Goodwin isn't getting cut. He's been running with the 1's and Rex likes him. He isn't a part of the receiver competition (like it or not). He's a lock.

If you want surprise candidates: Dez Lewis, Felton & Blanton would be my answers. A month ago Lewis looked like he'd be the #3 and he hasn't done anything since. Felton (and Gronk) just aren't good. One of them will make the team but both stink. Blanton was a guy that was thought to have a shot at starting next to AW. He's much further down the depth chart now.

You know, it wouldn't actually shock me if Glass Goodwin retires. He's obviously never been "all in" on football, and starting the season with a concussion, wouldn't surprise me if he's like "Oh, No! Not the head - I'm outta here!"

Likewise, while we'll miss his (healthy) play, I wonder if Aaron Williams retires or is cut before the start of the season? Given his neck history, being in concussion protocol so quickly is not a good place. Frankly, for his own long term health I kind of think he should consider stepping aside from the game.

(KW) I think this is his last season here, but I'd sure be surprised if he was let go this season.

I don't know who would really shock me. None of the WRs outside of Sammy and Woods would be a surprise cut. Dray might get the boot, but that would not be much of a surprise to me.

Kyle would definitely surprise me, especially given the Dareus suspension/rehab and so forth, plus the Bills would take a substantial cap hit I think. Next year, lower cap hit, higher starting salary, 34 years old - if he doesn't retire, I would think he's gone.

  14.

Professional athletes throw up all the time

It is your bodies response to your heart rate being too high. In some cases it is from pushing "too hard" and in some cases it is a case of just fitness. Not surprising that maybe some out of shape guys are in the August heat in Miami, get some of the dry heaves.

I agree with the latter. In fact there's a conditioning class at a club popular with high school athletes here which commonly has kids wretching over a trash can.

But is the former really true? I mean, soccer which is one of the most conditioning-demanding sports - even basketball - you don't see players hurling, do you?

Would it be fair to say that it's more a factor in a sport that prioritizes factors other than top CV conditioning (such as strength, and for the lines, sheer mass), and even there, is a sign that the players haven't yet achieved a desirable level of fitness?
