Free Agency News and Updates - around the league

Correct. 4 sacks over the final 5 games plus 2 against Houston in the playoffs. Why? The Eagles basically did exactly that with Graham, Barnett, Long, and Curry a few years ago and won a Super Bowl. -

I guess that makes sense since they have Bowser and Ferguson waiting in the wings, and are in a good position to grab an EDGE like Murray, Lewis, or Baun at 28. -

That last sentence is altogether inaccurate. Murphy is 29 years old, coming off of his 2nd best season in terms of sacks, and lead all Bills’ DEs in snap count last year. It makes absolutely no sense to cut a productive DE, thereby making your team worse, for the sake of cap space that you do not need. -

Keep Murphy. You can afford him for one year, and he comes off the books in 2021. He played the most snaps of any Bills’ DE in 2019, is a decent pass rusher, and will almost certainly be the best DE4 you can find (assuming you either re-up with Shaq or sign a FA and draft a guy). -

I supposed it depends on what you want. Shaq is probably set to be a steady, 4-8 sack guy that plays great run D. If you think that’s got more value at $10-12M per year than Clowney—whose upside is double digit sacks and is the best EDGE run defender in the game—at $20M, then maybe. The difference for me is that Clowney’s baseline—the minimum you’re going to get from him—is Shaq’s 2019 season: great run D and above average contribution as a pass rusher. -

Oh she absolutely can say whatever she wants; I simply don’t think it’s helping in any way. -

He played zero defensive snaps outside of the Jets’ game—in which he had 3 tackles. I’m not dissing Jaquan here, but he’s shown absolutely no reason to believe he’ll be roster worthy in 2020. Suppose she has to wear them somewhere -

People will think I’m overstating things, but this here is why the team needs to bring in a veteran leader. With LorAx gone, someone needs to be able to pull a kid like Poyer aside and tell him how to go about this to get what he wants. -

LorAx being gone plays a role in this...he was a big influence on Poyer not holding out last year (more so than Tre and even Hyde). Poyer picked a bad year to do this though—he was kind of brutal in coverage last year. Oh, and Rachel, it’s not that simple. See, he’s under contract, so he either plays for the Bills or he holds out and gets fined. -

Correct. The Chargers wanted offsets and a deferred cash payment; typically it’s one, the other, or neither. -
No sweat. I like Shaq, but if I’m spending legit money on a DE I want someone that’s exceptional at something aside from run D.
-
Well, I would say that Campbell has proven that he can hit big numbers, but I like him for more than just his sack numbers. He’s a sensational locker room guy, he is the best EDGE run defender in football (save for maybe Clowney), and you wouldn’t be tied to him for huge guarantees.
-
Campbell, no question. I’m sure that I can find another 6.5-sack player in the draft by 2022. I’ll take Campbell for the next 2 years until then.

Wow. What a great trade for Denver. @MJS, this is the kind of fleecing that you can do to a team with cap issues; a bona fide starting CB for a day 4 pick. Hope Beane is looking to do similar things.

Age, salary, the team’s current cap situation, and their current depth at the position.

Not necessarily. I’ll bet they could get Calais Campbell for a day 3 pick.

Probably. A lot of that has had to do with scheme fit. He’s a speed-to-power guy, so traditional methods of lining him up at 9-tech and 2-point aren’t the best way to make use of his skill set. He’s best off playing 7-tech and 8i rushing out of a 4-point. There’s a reason that his best sack numbers came when JJ Watt was hurt and Clowney got pushed closer to the OT. Which brings me to the idea that he’s a great fit here. The 7-tech spot is the position where Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson had their best production in McDermott’s D. It’s the position that took Shaq Lawson from a total non-factor to a potential big-$$ FA. Clowney is a perfect fit there, and McDermott will get more out of him than what we’ve seen. -

He has the 4th-most TFLs in the league over the last 4 years. The guys ahead of him are Aaron Donald, Chandler Jones, and Cam Jordan. He’s really good
