Isn't it possible that he talks about running and defense because, right now, that's this team's only path to victory? I agree that his vision for the offense is unclear at best, and a total miss at worst, but--to me--that's symptomatic of an offensive unit with zero talent. Now, that's ultimately of his own making, but we're all fooling ourselves if we think he isn't very likely to get a 3rd year to surround Allen with talent that will prove him to be a success or failure.

I fail to see how there's a last-word component here. What you've said simply isn't true. You don't get further away by giving up assets, since the team isn't going anywhere without a QB. A team without a franchise QB isn't in the conversation regardless. A team with a franchise QB will always be in the conversation. It's not a letter-grade situation; it's pass/fail.

You can only get closer by getting it right at QB; you don't get further away by getting it wrong

I can't agree that the team is set back in any way if Allen doesn't work out You aren't going anywhere without a QB anyway, so the only impact is that you'd be drafting later by winning 7-9 games instead of 4-6. If Allen isn't the guy, then the next regime gets to take their shot at a QB in 2020.

2 is definitely worse 1 just means that they placed a premium on getting the QB and are fine drafting high next year

Because in the NFL, you aren't winning anything without a franchise QB, and they weren't getting one of the top 4 without moving into the top 10.
