It's easy: had the team picked up Sammy's option year, he'd have been given a cap number equal to the average of the top 10 WRs in the league--that's true for any 1st round WR, and so his cap number would be identical to Benjamin's Moreover, he's a better player than Benjamin. Had the team kept him and let him walk in FA, they'd have gotten a 3rd round compensatory pick. And none of that is the point. I refuted John's claim that the team would have suffered cap-wise by keeping Dareus and Sammy--it's simply not true

I wasn't really worried about his foot after every tackle, but that's besides the point. John, the team is currently without the player that the traded a 3rd round pick for in order to replace Watkins. Had they simply picked up his 5th year option, he'd be on this team right now with zero adverse impact on the cap...that was my point. I drew up the numbers a ways back... But either way, he's not here, and that was a decision that the team chose to make with a FA--far different than birds they had in the hand like John discussed in his OP.

He was excellent here. He had 2 bad games in a contract year, and that's what many fans chose to fixate on...in general, the relatively low opinions of Gilmore on this board result from unrealistic expectations of cornerbacks. In Gilmore's "bad contract year", he allowed a grand total of 2 TDs, and performed statistically better than both Richard Sherman and Patrick Peterson. Now, that said, I like Tre White a lot. He's a different style player than Gilmore, but might be just as good overall, as he's better against the run and may have better ball skills.

Well John, you made the statement that the team would have zero cap space had they not dealt those guys. It's not true...the effect on cap space would be minimal. And yes, we can almost definitively say that there's no way they'd have traded a 3rd round pick in a year that they were trying to accumulate draft capitol for Benjamin if they had Watkins on an identical contract. The big difference is that the team would've been forced to trade a 2019 pick to get Allen instead of a 2018 2nd. Yes, he's well worth the contract, which is what many of us said at the time.
-
Actually, the difference in cap space is quite small...have to assume they don't sign Star if Marcel is still here, so the difference is all of $5M. I'm near certain that, had they picked up Sammy's option, they wouldn't have traded for Benjamin, so it's a literal wash. In fact, the only impact is that moving Sammy gave the team a 2nd-round pick that they used to trade up for Allen.

Should we go after Sam Mustipher?

Can Josh Allen continue to ascend? Yes--whether he actually does or not, he's the guy for 2019 Is this the end for McCoy and Clay? No and yes, respectively, but either way, young talent should be brought in to replace them Which receivers will step up? They should approach 2019 as though none of them have Is Levi Wallace a starting cornerback? They should approach 2019 as though he isn't Is the offensive line salvageable? They should approach 2019 as though it isn't.

Snow Shovelers needed at New Era
thebandit27 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm a 38-year old in Buffalo, and if I didn't have to be at work today I'd do it. Why? Because my kids will occasion to ask me for things that they don't need, and I tell them that I will gladly provide them with everything that they need, and only a little of what they want; they need to learn how to earn money for the things that they want. This shoveling opportunity is a great way for me to be an example to them that there are opportunities everywhere to make an extra buck. Of course, their solution to everything is to bake cookies and sell them...which they can get away with because they're cute kids. -

Now how crazy is this? You could potentially have team "owners" out there shoveling snow and getting paid for it! -
His play designs are actually quite good--his ability as a play-caller is something I'm skeptical of at this point, but who knows how much of that has been trying to (a) protect his rookie QB, or (b) protect his offense when all he's got is a 3rd-string or replacement-caliber QB running the show. In addition to GB and Cleveland, I feel like we could see any of NYJ, Jax, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Arizona (yes, I think Wilkes could be one-and-done), Carolina, Tampa Bay, Atlanta make a coaching change. Crazy

Just because a government entity makes a law that requires a company to pay a certain rate, that doesn't mean that the work is worth a greater value. There's a reason that kids shovel driveways at $5 a pop--it's unskilled labor that anyone can do. Nobody is is entitled to more of the Pegulas money just because they happen to be billionaires--that thought process is selfish and wrong IMO. The bottom line here is that any job is worth what someone is willing to pay. If they don't get enough shovelers, then they'll need to pay more. If they do get enough, then clearly the pay is sufficient to attract willing participants. Sure. Or go do something on your own. Either way, pay is based upon the value of the task performed. -

Because pay is equal to the value added by the task; it has no relation to the wealth of the payer. -
Lorax - should he be extended?
thebandit27 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Absolutely. He's been a great fit at the Sam, can give you snaps as a pass rusher, play ST in a pinch, and is a good locker room guy. I'd happily give him another year or two at $5M AAV. -

WR Technique Q - Overthrow to Foster
thebandit27 replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He missed him...not by much, but yeah, that's a miss. The ball needed to either come out earlier or have more air under it. Could an elite deep-ball tracker like Hill, Hilton, or Watkins make that play? Probably, but Foster isn't that guy, so his QB needs to throw a better ball. It's not like the Clay play where any pass catcher should have that. -
Slow your roll their partner He rushed the throw to Foster on the boundary and it sailed. Hardly a WTF moment, but like you said, as a Bills' fan, you had to go way too (not "to") far with it. Sort of like you're going way too far in assuming that I rubber stamp everything the kid does; maybe instead of firing that bullet it would make sense to see if that's true first? He's got a lot to work on, yes...but a WTF moment is the INT he threw across his body into the EZ in GB that cost the team points; not rushing a boundary throw. So like I said: slow your roll.

IMO, it was worse against Miami than I've ever seen it; even worse than the GB game. You can only watch so much of that. -

KB giving up on routes all day vs Miami--including one that lead to an INT--was the final straw.- 659 replies
