This conversation was probably held back in the '90s by people who are our age now, about the mid-60s teams.

It's pretty clear. The only way he could have gotten back on the field on Sunday is if the team doctors, with "consultation" from the independent neurologist, concluded that his gross motor instability was not neurologically caused. If the "consultation" from the neurologist is faulty, then that allows the team doctors, and by extension the coaches, to escape liability for putting him out there. The only way you reach further than this guy is if he says (a) he was pressured by the team to clear him, or (b) the team did not provide him with accurate information about what happened on the field. I happen to believe that (b) is probably true and (a) may be as well. But that'll be for the investigators to find out.

That's all fine and dandy, but McDaniel is trying to have it both ways. You can't isolate yourself from the decision by turning a blind eye to what you saw happen with your own two eyes, and then turn around and blubber that "I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I knowingly put him in danger" (or whatever he said). I kind of think the guy's a phony. Different personality but he's got some Greggo in him. Wants everyone to believe his narrative about himself.

And that's also why Eugene is getting the Chargers-Houston game, because of Herbert. If he plays.

We also have to remember that in 1980 a 44-yard FG was hardly a gimme. They probably should have stopped the clock, but I think they wanted a few more yards. Their kicker at the time, Ian Sunter, finished the season with a 55% FG percentage and a long of 42!

We need to know who the unaffiliated "consultant" is. Does the league have a pool of consultants that they randomly fly out to each game, or (as is more likely) do the consultants come from the home team's area? Strangely enough, a lot of doctors like football, too. They may even have a favorite team.

I was a little surprised initially that there was no flag. But focusing on the hit detracts from the bigger point: he should not have been out there to begin with.

We all remember if we were there. I was at the Chargers game after the hit (the no-power game). Concussions can take a while to manifest their effects. After that game he was never the same and you'll never convince me that the Wilson hit didn't play a part.

Everyone remembers Trent Edwards getting knocked silly by Adrian Wilson, coming back and beating the Chargers a week later to go to 5-1, and then literally never being good again, right?

Someone once said he always looks like he just smelled dog crap and now I can never unsee it.

And then when he does it, he gets right into the play instead of trying to draw the refs' attention to it. I'm glad the coaches beat that little tic out of him.

The only reason not to punt in that specific situation was to maintain a streak that in the grand scheme of things matters not a whit. Punting was the right move there. I don't really care for trying to draw the defense offside... that hardly ever works, and it's a time-waster, but at least they played it right by taking the delay penalty instead of wasting a timeout.

I'm waiting for the haters to say "but 63 of those games were started by Edmunds who couldn't crack any other lineup in the NFL" or something like that. 🙄

Facts are annoying, aren't they?

I think the team has the general feeling - as do I - that they can pick up yards whenever they want. Fail on 3rd and 1? No problem, we're going for it anyway on 4th. And the truth is that in have-to-have-it scenarios -- the 4th and 1 TD last night and a couple of late downs early on last week -- we usually find a way to pick up the yard(s). In other situations, the consequences are a lot more dire for the opponent if we pick it up than they are for us if we don't. So it's not surprising that in those types of situations, we lose the battle more often, either because we get outpushed or because we're not going to waste a particular play call if we don't absolutely have to have the yards. Not worried.

Hundred percent. That play was drawn up and practiced. It's great to have a QB who can make not only every throw in the book, but also a few that aren't.

My guess is Tyrel is probably also wondering why Sweeney is on the team....
