Alshon isn't going to be traded IMO. He's too young.
Smith is the only realistic option. We trade for him this week, he gets until the game after the bye to learn the offense/practice. That would be acceptable.
Yeah, thats why I said I don't think the Bears would do it anymore or it would cost too much if so. There were rumors that both Alshon and Forte could be had while Claussen was starting and Alshon was still hurt...but I doubt that would be the case now unless we sent a huge offer they couldn't refuse which would be stupid on our part and wont happen.
-
Trade deadline approaching quickly... Who would you (realistically) try to trade for and what would you give up?
Only 2 people really come to mind that could actually help this team this year. First and foremost, adding a WR midseason isn't usually a move that is as impactful as you would think because there is timing with the QB, they have to learn the offense still, etc etc. It can actually make the offense worse because if the WR and QB aren't on the same page, mistakes happen that can cost games.
That being said, I think the only 2 people worth exploring are Steve Smith and Alshon Jeffery.
1. Steve Smith - He has some familiarity with Taylor, although not a lot as Taylor rarely got to work with the ones. But he is also a grizzled Vet and has the kind of swagger and attitude that can be infectious, so he could bring more of that to our your WR core which adds to the value he brings. On top of that, he would likely be very cheap as a 1 year rental to replace our other broken 1 year rental Harvin.
2. Alshon - This to me would be worth exploring because he's a very talented and young WR we could have in our arsenal for years. My concerns though as he has dealt with his own injuries in his young career, so there is risk there. Bears I think would have traded him before he came back, but after his big game that window may be closing or getting more expensive. The problem with Alshon is its going to cost a lot to acquire and a lot to retain him after we acquire him.
Ive seen others like Roddy White, Colston, etc on here being thrown out...and at this stage, I don't know how much they help given they have already declined and don't know the offense. Steve Smith is still explosive, I can not say the same about some of the others. If we are going to consider White, Colton, etc...then rather than trade for someone like that, better we sign Wayne off the street and not have to give anything up or kick the tires on Welker or something.
So, my vote is Steve Smith...and I would actually like to see that happen. Maybe he can teach Woods how to get open.

Let me preface this topic with saying that I do, and did, agree with the Alonso trade. We have all seen what Shady can do when healthy, and even hobbled on this team, he showed a lot this past game against the Bengals, without much threat from the passing game.
But. Did we devalue him a little too much? Remembering the way he was used in Pettine's system, when he had a DROY runner-up season, he seemed to be something this team could really use. A LB that was used to great effect against the pass, who was one of the chief players when disguising blitzes, or showing blitzes and dropping off in coverage.
I watched this (I know it's a highlight video, but it's the best I can do.)
I noted Kiko's position in a lot of his highlights. Dropping into the middle of the field to protect against quick-ins and slants, he produced. Obviously the TO well dried up early as it is wont to do, but still. His effectiveness on short to intermediate routes across the middle was apparent. He wasn't a player without his negatives, namely getting swallowed up on run blocks. But would he have fit this system perhaps better than Bradham or Brown, two LB's who haven't had a great year in pass coverage, a similar system that he excelled in back in 2013 (even if he wasn't perfect)?
Again, reiterating that I still agree with the trade. And even if he is a better fit, I still would've pulled the trigger on the trade. But I thought I wouldn't notice much of a drop off.
And let's ignore injuries for a second, because this topic will quickly die if the only dialogue is "injury-prone, couldn't help in street clothes."
Its no secret I was high on Kiko as I was singing his praises on draft night. But, for an athletic LB to have had 2 major knee operations, one to each knee, before his sophomore season in the NFL is something that can't be disregarded when evaluation his future. His value is based on his mobility and athletic ability, and after he blew his other knee out, his future certainly was a little more murky as to how he would come back.
Ignoring that fact, which you really can't but I will do anyway, and focusing on the talent alone, Kiko is a promising players, always has been. I will say, Kiko tailed off quite a bit towards his end of his rookie season and definitely at his best in the first half the season IMO. That being said, its to be expected from rookies adjusting to playing 20 games between preseason and reg season.
Would I have liked to have kept him, sure, just like everyone else. However, at the time of the trade, he definitely seemed very expendable considering the other promising LB's we had coming off impressive seasons. And he brought back an Elite talent at RB to help an offense which was the sore spot the year before. So, at the time of trade and as we sit now, we definitely got the better end of the deal trading a LB with 2 bad knees and only one season under his belt for an Elite overall player and RB in McCoy. Given Kiko is out for the season again, the trade appears more like trade rape then us just getting a good deal, and there is what lies the risk with dealing with a player who's already had a major surgery on both knees.
Time of Trade, Bills grade A, Philly grade B- (if Kiko wasnt coming off knee surgery, would be an A, you can't get an A ever when trading for a player who hasn't seen the field yet after blowing out his knee).
Now, Bills grade A+++, Philly grade C- (I wont give it lower than a C- because they are fine at RB and Kiko contributed a little this season and still could potentially come back and still be a good player next year).
-
Only because who they got with the picks from the Bills are even worse, but no one in Cleveland is pining for Watkins.
Categorically not true. Was even a hot topic after scrimmage with them. I have a few close friends who always bring it up and how they would have rather have kept the pick and had Watkins then get more picks the Browns would waste on lesser players.

I guess...
My opinion is that there's zero connection between the two. The guy rolled his ankle. It stinks for him, and to his credit, he still made a key play despite the injury.
There are probably some alterations that he can make to his training routine to eliminate some of the soft-tissue stuff he's gone through, but for the most part, I think he's been a victim of bad luck.
I agree with whoever the poster was (I think it was NoSaint) that said we need to learn to separate his going to the media from his performance on the field.
This times 1000. The biggest issue with Sammy, especially this year, that like McCoy he has been playing despite not being 100%. When you are dealing with soft tissue injuries, playing through has a high chance of aggravating it again or making it worse. Not to mention, that because you are not 100% a player will then compensate and favor that which in turn puts injuring something else at a higher risk.
To call Sammy injury prone at this stage is beyond premature. I remember when Matthew Stafford was "injury prone" during his first 2 years. Guess what, he hasn't missed a single game since those first 2 years over the last 5 seasons, which includes the 6 games this year.
Its football, and players can easily get hurt on any given play. Now if Sammy got hurt just running around or something, I can see it being more concerning. His footing slipped (seemed to be a common problem Sunday as I saw several players lose footing, including McCoy on multiple occasions when planting to cut) and that caused his ankle to roll. I don't care if he had played 10 years injury free at that point, if you roll your ankle you are most likely going to get at least a mild sprain if not worse. Especially when trying to stop and turn like that. Everything about this latest injury was about it being an unfortunate and unlucky scenario of his cleats slipping and it causing his ankle to roll.
Yet he still made the huge and critical catch for us. This kid has a very bright future ahead of him and I have yet to see anything that would label him injury prone.
-
Everything Jim said was accurate and spot on. Hopefully Rex and Dennis can really revaluate what this D did great last year and what they are doing wrong this year and fix it, and fast. With all the injuries on the offense, we really need the D to get their butts in gear. That being said, I hold a lot of the players responsible too. I saw a lot of weak efforts on that field, especially by our vaunted front 4 who looked to be running at half speed several times when in pursuit, almost jogging, after the RB and stuff. They may be frustrated with how they are being used, but there is NO EXCUSE for not going 100% out there. Thats not the answer. It wasn't just one or two occasions, it was several.
-
Which is kind of annoying, isn't it? I'm all for giving either of them time to figure it out or get shipped out but saying anything about either of them (future career-wise) at this point is still premature.
I like both QBs moving forward, but how anyone can question TT as the starter right is mind blowing. The kid has balled out and without most of his weapons all year while playing hurt. EJ needs time to play to evaluate his future as more than a backup, but no way TT should have his job in jeopardy. Now if EJ had lit it up for two weeks after having such a strong preseason, then there would be something to talk about. But to unseat TT at this point, EJ would have had to be exceptional to even open that can of worms, and he wasn't.
-
So it seems like EJ didn't impress enough for anyone to talk about him being the starter when Taylor returns from injury.
I would argue that 1. there was zero drop off in overall production from the QB position with EJ in.
2. EJ actually had the best total passing yards in a Bills game this season.
3. EJ gets sacked once every 21 attempts and Tyrod has been sacked once per every 9.8 attempts
4. Tyrod loses on average 7.14 yards per sack and EJ has averaged 3.5 yards lost per sack
5. EJ had at least 6 completions to WRs in this game. Tyrod has struggled to hit WRs. Last game our top two wideo outs had 1 catch
6. EJ also made plays with his feet albeit less exciting ones but he got a TD and a bug first down when needed.
7. While the Bills went 3 and out an embarrassing 50% of the time under EJ, they did the same thing against the Titans under Tyrod and Taylor did even worse against the Giants where the Bills were 57% 3 and out.
Both are throwing close to 70% completion, Tyrod a little over EJ a little under.
Neither is tearing it up the way they should with all these weapons.
Personally I think EJ has more potential because he actually can play from the pocket. If he has more practice time as the number one he could elevate his game. I feel like Taylor is already playing at the top of his game and the result is not much better than EJ in mid learning curve.
I say start EJ against Jacksonville. If he doesn't play better than this week then Taylor can come back after the bye but if EJ plays well I think you use the BYE to establish EJ as the QB because these scrambling QBs don't last more than a few games without injury. My prediction is that EJ would have to start week 5 when Tyrod got hurt and I was only a week off. Michael Vick has only had one season out of 13 where he was able to avoid injury. That is a telling stat.
All these weapons? People do realize we haven't had "all these weapons" for most the year right? Our offense is decimated by injuries, and even when on the field they have been playing hurt (TT, McCoy, Harvin, Sammy). So how can any QB take advantage of weapons who aren't in the game?
-
I think the doom and gloom comes from seeing what we would do if we made it into the wildcard game. Against playoff caliber teams we have looked way over matched.
Yet we've never lost a game by more than one score despite most of our offense being hurt most games.
-
Shhhhhh don't tell anyone that, they prefer wallowing in misery and proving why their negative outlook is always the correct outlook about everything Bills, win or lose. So, we lost yesterday. It didn't look great. But let's look at the big picture here: we are 3rd in the WC race behind the Jets and Steelers. The Steelers are a lock for wild card IMO, they have been finding ways to win even without Ben.
Jets are 4-1 against opponents who are collectively 11-17 (not a single opponent has a winning record).
Bills are 3-3 against opponents who are collectively 20-12 (includes TWO undefeated teams).
We just knocked out the toughest part of our schedule and we are still at .500 - the Jets have been playing NFL teams that resemble the power puff girls.
Yes, there are some major question marks.
No, the season isn't over. Not even close.

Oh you mean all the things you arm chair GMs were happy about the time they happened? So rather than you guys be wrong, it's now about you being right about those being mistakes and it's the team that was wrong all along...got it. Weird that 90% of his board aren't NFL GMs, they had it all figured out and still do and are always right.Like:
- Using a first round pick on a QB that was projected as a 3 round talent or later.
- Using two first round picks on a WR without a proven QB.
- Trading for a high miliage running back that is in decline and giving him 25 million guaranteed.
- Throwing the majority of the cap at the defensive line, one that is severly underperforming.
- Not using enough resources for the offensive line.
I love how this team was super talented, great free agency and off season, etc. all year and when we win. When we lose, all the moves are mistakes, the team is doomed, and you were right all along and should be the GM.
-
Weird, because last I looked we are 3-3 and you started a thread about Rex getting fired his year. Lots of people talking about hopes he gets fired, and we are 3-3.Ok 1st off, nobody said anything about firing Rex after 3-3. I said if we have a losing season (not in those exact words). And don't sit there and act like Rex made this team any better man. Be realistic will you? How many injuries do we have or have had on defense besides Aaron Williams? Every starter has played and the majority of our defensive starters are on the field but yet this defense is soft.
Based on the few responses I've read, I guess I gotta look forward to Rex turning this thing around since he'll be here to stay.
And we have also been missing mckelvin and AW is more important then you think. And for the love of God, if people don't understand how having an offense stall for large parts of the game forcing the D to play for long stretches of time and wear down, then you probably should t be posting about football.
The d needs work for sure, no doubt about it. It's grossly under performing, but there is more to it than just Rex sucks.

This! Times 1000. This board is nuts. Clay came up short on 2 third downs against Giants in first quarter, and everyone was hating him...even people who were swinging on his junk during Miami game. Same people singing him praises again this week. This is the most reactional and irrational group of people I think I've ever seen. If we win, they love Rex. If we struggle it's time to fire him. Absurd. Same with Taylor, one minute he's the savior, the next they want EJ, now they want Taylor again. Bipolar galore around here.If he fired him after one season then no one worth hiring would come here
Yes, he needs to make some adjustments, so let him do it and see how it plays out. Not to mention this teams as been prison raped by injuries to critical players so far this year.
-
I'm not from Buffalo and I'm not a hockey fan so I don't know how Pegula operates. My question is, based on your knowledge on Terry, how realistic is it that if we perform bad this year and the fans ask for a new HC that Terry will can Rex after one year?
Maybe it's not a good idea to fire a coach who is 3-3 despite missing damn near his entire offensive starters and their back ups for part or most of the year? How about we let Rex have some time to adjust, get his players healthy, etc before we start talking about firing. I mean this fire talk this early with this amount of injuries is the dumbest crap I've seen ever on this board, and they have been plenty of really dumb things on this board.
-
Harvin is a good mentor for Watkins, since Watkins will have a career much like Harvin's - full of potential but ruined by being injury prone.
Well considering he was not healthy coming into the game, maybe he wouldn't be injury prone if we didn't have the rest of the offense damn near out too forcing him to play before he was healthy.
-
I don't want to see the **** go undefeated, but at this point, we need them to run away with the division. Colts don't look like they're running away with anything. Give this one to the **** and keep the rest of the AFC down here with us?
I put $100 on the Pats figuring I will either jinx them and lose (money well spent) or I will at least win $100 when they rape the Colts
-
Fitzy to boot.
Hmmm...guess the Jets being better has nothing to do with adding Marshall, Fitz, Revis, Cromartie and probably the best defensive player in the draft right? Not to mention their cushy schedule so far.
LOL. This board LOVES to go all lengths to tear down their own. Yet, we are missing damn near our entire offense, including our starting QB, top 2 WRs, starting RT, and most our RBs for all or half the game and somehow its pile on Rex day.
Considering we are 3-3 given the extreme amount of injurers to critical players like Watkins, McCoy, Taylor, Harvin, the OL, AW, McKelvin, etc is not bad. And we played 2 of the best teams in the NFL in Pats and Cincy in that stretch of 6 games.
The over exaggeration around here of Rex and Watkins is off the charts.
-
I sometimes wonder if most Bills fans watch other NFL games...
They don't...
-
Just looked and last year's Rex's team is now 4-1, matching the number of wins they had last year under Rex when they went 4-12. Our team, which was 9-7 last year has only 3 wins and looks lost. I say coaching does matter a lot and wished we signed the guy the Jets signed. Quiet, demanding guy who demands discipline.
Weird...I look around the NFL over the years...and teams missing their starting QB, starting OT, top 2 WRs, and most their RBs typically don't win much.
But somehow Rex is bad because a team starting backups at most skill positions can't get it done against a 5-0 team? Its not fair to judge Rex on a team missing its best players most the season. Let this team finally all get healthy and then judge what he can do with it.
-
This team is undisciplined beyond belief. That's on Ryan. With minimal penalties this team is a championship competitor. I can't imagine the Pegulas putting up with this crap beyond a honeymoon year.
You clearly don't understand the notion of an over/under.
-
a starting QB would not be winning this game.
we have been killing it on time of possession and our defense has not done ****.
this loss is on the sidelines and coaching and on the defense.
get Rex the hell out of town.
Come on...Rex is literally working with 2nd string players or worse at most the skill positions on offense. Rex hasn't had a healthy team all year, and missing critical players...yet had us 3-2 coming into this game. This pile on Rex when he's missing the best players on his offense is ridiculous. Yes the D has been a let down, but they are also missing 2 starting DB's and have been on the field a lot.
I say fire the DC and bring back Schwartz.
-
The next draft the Bills need to draft a QB early. EJ will NEVER be an NFL quarterback. I was rooting so hard for the guy to make it but I have to give up on him. Three years in the league and he hasn't improved one iota. He's as bad now as he was on his first day in the league. The guy has all the physical tools but he just does NOT have it upstairs. No brains. This guy is dumber than a box of rocks.
Yet he has 2 TDs in the first half...RELAX he is a BACKUP. News flash: backups are not as good as the starters
-
Here we go...man this board just LOVES to hate on its own players and lives for these moments. You guys do realize he played hurt right? And when you play hurt on these kinds of injuries without letting them heal 100% you have a real chance to reaggrivate it or make it worse. He played because we were really short handed on offense this week against a good team.
Sometimes I really hate this board.
-
This is the risk you have when you come back early from these kinds of injuries.
Should the Bills trade for a WR?

I actually thought about TO as well. Yes he's old, but he was always a freak athletically, so wouldn't be crazy to give him a workout. He did fine when he was hear in terms of off field stuff, so I wouldn't worry about off field drama.
That being said, even if we did bring him in for a workout, I would not expect him to make the team...again, he's pretty old and hasn't played in a while, so I doubt he would be able to contribute a whole lot. However,I still don't think it would be crazy to work him out and just see if there is anything left there even if I doubt there is.
