1. If I had to guess (and I will), it's a PHP script.  You're running mod_php, so PHP scripts are processed "in process" by the web server.  You probably happened to run top while PHP was crunching something.

Edit... I didn't notice the CPU time... I stand by the above statement, but perhaps the PHP code got stuck in a loop.

not anymore.... those puppies are cached.

and as long as this was some freak thing that rarely happens - it is good news cause it probably explains the load jump at 3:00pm and after. after I killed it - the load went to nothing and the execution time plummeted. My hopes are once again on the rise.

  2. what the hell is that top process and why has it been there so long? How do I determine what it is and if it is bad - how do I kill it?

  3. I probably spoke too soon. Load has crept up, but thankfully execution times have remained relatively low. Memory is good - 1 GB of RAM free.

Our traffic, as measured as data output per second, is currently half of what we had yesterday. But yesterday had 3x the traffic that the previous Monday had.

I was hoping it would have stayed ultra-low. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Yesterday was a HUGE day that was different from most normal work days. The number of users online means nothing if the rate of clicking increases per user. So, that explains why yesterday was a slow day.

  4. Thank you, all the unacknowledged masses that helped Scott out with this...

    159929

Those unacknowledged masses would be the ones scattered all over the internet who have written about these issues over the years.

The change last night came from my own research via google and from some tips from strangers at other websites who have dealt successfully with these specific issues.

The ones that have dealt with me directly were acknowledged. Thank you for your concern.

  5. I don't know if today's traffic is like yesterday's yet, but with the same number of visitors per 30 minutes - our performance numbers are ridiculously good today.

More changes coming by week's end.

Hopefully, this will push the amount of supported concurrent users up from 3-400 to 7-800. Only time will tell, but I am cautiously optimistic.

  6. So give me your thoughts................

I also get the GM discount.... When the time came I bought a Honda.

Not even deep discounts would make me buy a GM again. I know they keep wooing me back with their lack of style, cheap interiors, and shoddy workmanship, but I vowed never again to lay down my money for one. Life's too short.

  7. Anyone who has eyes that can be reasonably corrected w/ traditional lenses is a DAMN FOOL to get one of these procedures done.

The bottom line is that if something does go wrong - and it happens frequently - your life will be ruined. You will have electively !@#$ed over your windows to the world. Your vision could be forever ruined - there are NO FIXES YET FOR THEIR MISTAKES. You could live the rest of your life IN CONSTANT PAIN.

Now, for some people - their vision is SOOO bad that those risks may be worth it. For the vanity crowd that just doesn't want to be hassled with glasses or contact lenses - then remember that it was your choice to ruin your life if your surgery goes wrong.

  8. The puzzle is trying to figure out what the hell is going on...it seems that every little thing has some meaning, and something from three episodes back that seemed irrelevent might suddenly become an "Oh, that's what that was" item next week.  A very subtle and well-knit story...it's like an X-Files episode expanded into a full season and fleshed out so there's no holes.

Ultimately, I think the show's essentially a morality play investigating the theme of "finding your purpose in life".  But really, it works on a bunch of different levels: thematic, character development, plot...

I guess what I am asking is if there is a deliberate "we are leaving clues for the viewer to find so that they can solve the puzzle of the show" or are we just talking about a good script? i.e. is this a Murder/Mystery Dinner Party or just a story?

  9. Being a Rudolph fan, allow me...

    Hermey is the dentist

    Rudolph's father was Donner.

    Reinder coach was Blitzen

Clarise's bow (dammit) red or pink.

Rudolph's best friend at camp: crap, can't remember...something like "Spike."

    Hermey was IN-DE-PEN-DANT

    Squirt gun shot jelly

    Train had square wheels.

"Didn't I ever tell you? Bumbles Bounce!"

Fog is thick as Peanut Butter. "Don't you mean pea soup?" "You eat what you eat and I'll eat what I eat."

    148360

6 right, 2 wrong, one you gave multiple answers, and I'll give you credit for another answer I wasn't thinking of, but is also correct.

    so. 7.5/10.

  10. What was the name of the elf who wanted to be a dentist?

    Who was Rudolph's father?

    Who was the reindeer coach?

What color was Clarise's bow (the doe who liked Rudolph)?

Who was Rudolph's best friend at reindeer camp?

What reason did the elf give for not needing anyone else?

On the Isle of Misfit Toys what was wrong with the squirt gun?

What was wrong with the train?

What secret did Yukon Cornelius know about the Abominable Snow Monster?

What food did Yukon Cornelius compare the fog with?
