Bledsoe: An NFL Never-Was

Recommended Posts

I'm not a big stat guy, but here's a sobering article for those who think Drew's stats will put him in the HOF.

Cold, Hard Facts

* Heading into the 2004 season, Bledsoe has posted a single-season passer rating of more than 80 just four times in 11 years. (Tom Brady has posted an 80-plus passer rating three times in three seasons.)

* Bledsoe’s career passer rating of 76.8 ranks 18th among active quarterbacks with a 1,500 career attempts. (Brady’s career passer rating of 86.4 ranks puts him at a tie for ninth all time with Dan Marino.)

* Bledsoe has led the league in pass attempts three times, completions twice, and passing yards just once. He’s never finished better than third in touchdown passes. (Brady has never led the league in pass attempts, completions or passing yards, but has already led the league once in touchdown passes.)

* Bledsoe has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns in five of 11 seasons. (Brady has never thrown more interceptions than touchdowns over the course of a season and has a nearly 2 to1 touchdown to interception ratio in his career.)

* Despite his reputation as a strong-armed gunslinger, Bledsoe has a career average of just 6.6 yards per pass attempt. (“Dink and dunk” passer Brady averages 6.7 yards per attempt in his career.)

* Bledsoe has completed just 57.1 percent of the passes in his career, with a single-season best of 61.5 percent in 2002. (Brady’s career completion percentage is 61.9).

* Bledsoe’s numbers in seven career postseasons games are dreadful: 129 for 252, 1,335 yards, 6 TDs, 12 INTs, and passer rating of 54.9 that makes even fraud Peyton Manning’s postseason performances look respectable.

* In his one Super Bowl appearance, Bledsoe posted a line of 25 for 48 (52.1 percent), 253 yards, 2 TDs, 4 INTs, and a 46.6 passer rating. He lost that game, 35-21. In two Super Bowl appearances, Brady has posted a line of 48 for 75 (64.0 percent), 499 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT, and a 95.4 passer rating. He’s won both games.

Yeh but he bounced back in the playoff rematch vs. the Steelers that year....

Oh wait - no - they scored zero TD's and lost 7-6

Putting drew in the hall of fame would be like giving Yasir arafat the nobel peace prize.

He'll still get votes, although his time in Buffalo will probably only serve to lessen his chances....

That article is comparing him to Brady, not to the other QBs in the Hall. Whether or not Brady's better won't be the criteria used by the HOF selectors.

Also, it spends a fair amount of time on passer ratings. Wanna guess how many HOF QBs have a lifetime passer rating that ranks in the all-time top 20? Try 5. John Elway is 33rd, behind such luminaries as Brian Griese, Brad Johnson and Mark Brunell.

Far as Bledsoe's concerned, think Dan Fouts. Similar stats, and Fouts never won an AFC championship. So does Drew get in? Debatable... but even if he's not a HOF-caliber QB, it's a long drop-off from there to "never-was".

JMO....

anyone notice the important stats like....oh....his win loss record isn't listed. His record as a starter on the road. But hey....he will be right there with the Archie Mannings of the NFL, good stats, Can't win.

And one small correction. You list 'Smashed every imaginable Patriots' passing record'. Really? how about completion %? TD to Int %? I am sure there are MANY that have been re written by Brady. Oh and add to that 0-1 vs 2-0 as a starter in Superbowls. Oh and this one... Brady = 2x Superbowl MVP.

Please post things that matter.

Perhaps I should stop being lazy and register. . .

My point was basically similar to the one mentioned above. . .he may not be a HOF Quarterback, but to call him a "never was" is quite the statement. Once again, as stated, if you had the chance to grab Bledsoe from the mid 90s, you would do it. He is obviously washed up now, but he was bumrushed by 3000 fans here in Buffalo for a reason when he was signed. I had those stats saved from an argument I made with someone at a different forum during training camp. Obviously, I feel a little more embarrassed after the Pats game. . .but give the guy some credit. He isn't RJ!

Ummm, that's not a correction. At the time, Bledsoe DID smash every imaginable Patriots passing record. The fact that Brady may have taken some of them back doesn't mean that Bledsoe didn't do it first.

And again, we're not comparing Bledsoe to Brady. If you take the W/L record, of COURSE Brady is going to beat every current QB out there.

The guy is on the downside of a solid career and now you want to try and rip him and everything he has ever done apart. Maybe you should go visit Canton and check out the stats of some other HOF QBs before starting a moronic thread like this one.

Coach... to use one of your favorites...

"you're kidding, right"?

Now, Bledsoe, HOF, mentioned in the same breath?? Well, if Bledsoe makes it into the HOF, then why shouldn't Jeff George???? George has a better career rating by at least 4 points. and if Jeff George makes it in there, then the HOF needs to be renamed the HOS.

Way to point out only PART of the equation.

Bledsoe has 11,000 more yards (35% more than George) and 56 more TDs. He's had 3 4000+ yard seasons and was 15 yards away from a 4th (George has none). Hell, Bledsoe has 3 times as many rushing TDs as George (6 vs 2).

Passer rating is overated. See Lori's post:

Wanna guess how many HOF QBs have a lifetime passer rating that ranks in the all-time top 20? Try 5. John Elway is 33rd, behind such luminaries as Brian Griese, Brad Johnson and Mark Brunell.

Again, we all know Bledsoe isn't playing well this seaosn. To say that he's sucked throughout his career is just ignorance.
