A good look at rookie Interior Linemen

Recommended Posts

Rookie interior lineman drafted high (1st day picks) have great sucess rates as starters in their first year. Most importantly, the top tear players have played fantastically and we grabbed two of the 3 (Alex Mack went 21st).

In 2005

Chris Spencer, Logan Mankins, David Baas and Marcus Johnson drafted in the first two rounds, only one Bass hasn't lived up to that billing and both Spencer/Mankins started off the bat.

2006

Davin Joseph, Nick Mangold, Duece Lutui, Daryn Collegde, Ryan Cook, Chris Chestor, and Jason Spitz, Charles Spencer in the 3rd. The first four are all starter and only Lutui wasn't starting his rookie. Spitz the 4th center taken started his rookie year with Collegde in GB.

2007

Ben Grubs, Aaron Sears, Justin Blayock, Ryan Khalil, Sameson Satele. The guards (who all weren't guards) Grubs, Sears and Blayock all started as rookies and our good players (Sears career may be threatened due to concussion problems). Satele started as a rookie but is no longer with the fins and while sitting a year Khalil is the center of one of the best o lines in football. Marsha Yanda was the first guard taken in the 3rd that year as well started as a rookie. The Iowa lineman is similar in size to and demeanor to Levitre and like Andy shifted from tackle to guard.

2008 was a poor year for interior linemen but as you can see the highly touted guys still played good

Chico Rachil, and Mike Pollack were the only two Interior Lineman drafted in the first day, both guys started last year and like Wood Pollack moved from center to guard. Jeremy Zuttah was the only other interior linemen drafted in the first 3 rounds and now he will start if Sears can't be cleared medically.

Its a very low risk proposition to draft interior lineman in the first two rounds. Even guys in the third round have high hit rates. I think the Bills targeted guards because you can get value at that position. There are just certain guys like Mangold and Joesph that you know thay are going to be good. I think its just easier to scout these guys and scouts just know what works and doesn't work in the NFL. There are busts don't get me wrong but its not as high risk as other positions.

Great job!!!!

Doesn't it make you wonder why we haven't drafted a first day interior lineman since Ruben Brown (another smashing success)?

Here's an edited version of something I posted just prior to the draft. It started out as a Football Outsiders piece by Bill Barnwell. He did a study covering the NFL drafts from 1988 to 2005. His success rate is based on whether the drafted player makes the Pro Bowl within his first four seasons. I did some additional research to see how many players at each position were drafted during the 18 years of the study.

Position Success % #Picks

QB 27 % 36

RB 32.3 % 62

WR 27.5 % 69

TE 30 % 19

C 14.2 % 7

G 35.7% 18

T 14.1% 59

DE 13.6% 69

DT 34.0% 48

LB 27.9% 59

DB 19.1% 87

Guards and centers are not selected in the first round at a high rate. Only a total of 25 center/guards drafted in 18 years in the first round. In fact not including specialists, center and guard are the least drafted positions in the first round. But guards particularly have a very high rate of making the Pro Bowl within 4 years (35.7%). And centers (if you include Nick Mangold in 2006) have a nice success rate too.

While interior linemen are not often drafted in the first round the ones that are picked are usually players that grade out so high that there is little inherent risk in taking them...Nick Mangold, Alex Mack, Eric Wood.

No center has been taken higher than 14th overall since 1988. These are the only first round centers taken from 1988-2006. They were all taken between #14 and #29.

Brian Williams, 18th overall in 1989

Bern Brostek, 23rd overall in 1990

Steve Everitt, 14th overall in 1993

Jeff Hartings, 23rd overall in 1996, Pro Bowl in his 8th and 9th years with his second team, Pittsburgh

Damien Woody17th overall in 1999, Pro Bowl in his 3rd year

Jeff Faine, 21st overall in 2003, Pro Bowl alternate in his 5th year

Chris Spencer, 26th overall in 2005

Nick Mangold 29th overall in 2006, Pro Bowl alternate in 2007, Pro Bowl in 2008

In summary, interior offensive linemen are not often drafted in the first round for whatever reason. But the ones that are typically prove to be very good values.

I'm pretty sure I remember the Davin Joseph pick was acquired from the Bills.

No. I think that you have him confused with Kenyatta Walker back in 2001. We traded our #14 to TB who took Walker. We wound up with Clements and a 2nd. The trade wasn't bad for the Bills, although I was hoping at the time that they would draft Hutchinson, who if I recall went at 17.

No, we could have traded way down and took Joseph and a whole lot more, but good ole Marv and Dumbo were hell bent on Whitner at #8.

I know. I've been wondering this for years.

I thought it was clear as day that much of our success in the early '90's could be attributed to our great o-line.
