Let's Pretend Today is Draft Day

The last move you made was to acquire Terrell Owens... No other moves have been made...

What do you do if you are GM and today is draft day...???

How do you fix the starting LOG position, Need for a pass catching TE, need for a pass rusher and need for a quality Line backer?

How smart are You ?

I am going to sit at 11 and let the draft come to me. If a QB like Stafford or Sanchez is there. I want to play my cards to go back and grab an extra #2. If we can move back to the 20-25 range, I grab Tyson Jackson. In the second, I take Duke Robinson and one of the TE's (Coffman, Nelson or Casey).

If no traders, I am looking at the best impact guy for 2010 (no development guys). I imagine they have 2-3 guys they expect to be there and I expect a DT or DE to be the pick. Jerry or the Texas pass rusher.

I agree with you and am usually a big believer in building the lines first but I am not sure if there will be true value at 11 for a DL. I would not be upset at all though if we took care of LB in the 1st and went after a DE in the 2nd rd. I don't want to overreach based strictly on need.

If Raji or Curry aren't there (which they won't be), I trade down if I get an offer and grab Jerry, Cushing or Jackson. If I don't get a trade offer, I grab Pettigrew. People are saying the tight end depth is good in this draft, but I don't see it. After the top three, I see a whole bunch of Derek Fines and Brad Cottams. The Bills need a playmaker there.

I'm almost always in favor of Trading Down and getting extra Picks...If The Bills can grab an extra 2nd Round Pick I would do it in a heartbeat...Especially in this Draft where I doubt there is a lot of difference between Players you can grab at #11-#20...That being said I'm pretty high on 2 Players at #11...DT BJ Raji and DE Robert Ayers...I think both Players would provide immediate help...I'm REAL high on Ayers...I think those who are selling him short are insane...Just watch the Kid in His one on one drills at the Sr. Bowl...He's a monster...And He's a true 4-3 end at 270 lbs...I doubt Raji will be there at #11...But if He is I think it's a no-brainer...Other than those two I would Trade Down, get the extra Picks, and stockpile talent...I would target Ayers, Pettigrew, or Maualuga in a Trade Down scenerio...

I'm not sure why anybody is high on Ayers. He had three sacks last year and ran a 4.8. Mel Kiper on Ayers: "Ayers enjoyed a solid season in the SEC and stood out at the Senior Bowl practices. I thought he'd run about a 4.6-second time in the 40 at the combine workout, but he clocked only a 4.80. If during individual testing he can push that number down closer to what I expected, he'll come off the board between picks No. 20 and No. 32. "

But I am a fan of trading down. Our first and third for Philly's two firsts works according to the draft chart. It's more likely to happen on draft day too as people slide down to where trading up is attractive.

Great scenario;

1st round trade down for an additional secong rounder-great draft talent this year in that round.

Late 1st-LB's Cushing, Maybin, Maululuga

2nd-DE's Connor Barwin or Ayers

2nd (off trade)-Year of the Center-Get one Hangartner can play either Guard or Center-selection Eric Wood or Alex Mack

I'd even trade our third or one of the fourths to jump a few spots up to grab one of those players. Cenetrs are vital in the AFC East

I'm not knowledgeable about Ayers, however a 40 yard dash time might not be the best metric for a defensive lineman. I'm sure Pat Williams had a crappy 40, but he sure could explode off the line.

You're partially right there, but remember Pat Williams was a DT, not a DE. DT's 40 times are generally irrelevant. DE's are not. Dwight Freeney ran a 4.38.

I'm curious.. What makes folks think that Derek Fine can't/won't be a playmaker? How many games did the guy play in last season? Seven? Do I think the guy is the next coming of Antonio Gates or Tony Gonzalez? No, but still too early to say.. I look at him and tend to think more of Todd Heap or Wesley Walls.

Nothing about Fine excites me. In ten games last year he had ten catches for 94 yards and one TD. He's this slow (4.89), lumbering blocking TE. He reminds me of a slow Jay Riemersma more than Walls or Heap.

I think the priority, post T.O. signing, is a TE to further bolster our offensive arsenal. Looks more and more like Crabtree will fall out of the top 10. If that happens, a few teams will come knocking for a trade down. Fine with me as I beleive Pettigrew in the 20's is better than Pettigrew @ 11. Combine shmombine, the game of football is a lot different with the pads on than what you can do in a few agility drills.

That would be the best scenario possible, to pick up a DE/DT, OG or C, and TE in rounds 1-2.

The QB's in this draft are the wild-cards. If both are selected Top 10 (seems unlikely) that will probably push a good player to the Bills. I also think there's going to be a second run on O-tackles between #15 and #20-ish. Those teams might be a good candidate to trade down with so they can get the OT they want.

If both QB's somehow slip to the Bills slot I think that might actually be a problem. It makes me wonder if anyone would then trade up. The Jets at #17 you could argue is the first team behind the Bills that is most likely to draft a QB.

If Brown or Orakpo are there, I take him.

If not, I might look at Andre Smith (if available) for LG. I'd obviously have to investigate him and his issues, but if I felt that maybe he got a bad rap I'd take him.

If he's not there, I look for a pass rushing LB like Larry English or Maybin (if I thought he didn't lose his quickness).

I'm in the minority, but I think I draft Ray Maualuga at 11. People can say that he's not great in coverage and he doesn't wrap up enough, but he's a playmaker. We have enough solid guys. We need more playmakers. So this pick kind of feeds off of Owens. But I think he could make an immediate impact on the defense.

He is anything but a blocking TE, he is a receiving TE. He played in the slot in the spread offense. Just because he has a slow 40 time doesn't make him a blocking TE.

I fire whoever is in charge of not filling needs before the draft with mid level free agents so I can have options in the draft (if that person is me in the bills system I fire myself and give my self a kick@ss severence package)

But see....if I was GM that would not happen because i would never allow myself to go into the draft would so many needs not addressed:

I sign one of the two OLB's that are still available that have played in a cover 2 system. I really dont want to take a LB in the first round unless it is Curry.

I sign either Mike Goff or Kendall Simmons so we can keep Hangarter at center. I still plan to take a center high in the draft but want to make sure I have a veteran offensive line in place so there can be competition in camp.

I sign Kalimba Edwards as a pass rushing specialist JUST IN CASE my first player that I want to choose (which woudl be Everett Brown) is gone. This will allow me to take a DE in the second round or in a trade down but not rely on him to have a immediate impact. if they do then I can cut Kelsay in camp.

In the draft I take Everett Brown in the first, best TE prospect in the second, best center available in the third, and from the 4th round on I pick players based off of ability but can also play special teams.

Why? We don't run a 3-4, so unless we're blitzing the WLB every play (which we can't) it's a wasted pick.

Just because he has a slow 40 time doesn't make him a blocking TE.

Good point. It just makes him completely ineffective. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Kalimba Edwards couldn't even start in Detroit. In 11 starts with Oakland he had just five sacks. He's only slightly more exciting than Jason Babin. I'll pass on him. I'd rather give Hargrove another shot. He's four years younger and has more upside than K. Edwards.
