What scoring system do you use?

Recommended Posts

I'm always the commissioner of my money league, and I can't seem to get the scoring just right. We always use 1 point per 10 rushing/recieving yards, 6 points per rushing/recieving TD, 1 point per 25 passing yards, 4 points per passing TD. Additionally, in the past we've always awarded 1 point per reception, but I came to be unhappy with that, in that I thought quarterbacks became somewhat meaningless as the other positions racked up all the points.

So this year we took out the point per reception...and the 6 top scorers in the league at the moment are all quarterbacks! This can't be right...

What scoring system do you use? Someone in my league suggested half a point per reception. Help please! :worthy:

We don't start giving QB's yardage points until they hit 100. From there they get 1 point every 50 yards (with a bonus point at the 200 and 300 yard mark). Once they get beyond 300 then it goes to a point every 25 yards. Seems to work pretty well.

And I've always squashed the point per reception rule anytime it's brought up in our league. I hate the idea of a WR catching a little hitch, getting tackled for no gain and then getting a point for it. Or a RB catching a screen, misreading a block and going nowhere and still getting a point out of it.

Next year I think I'm going to see if I can get a point per first down rule added. Seems like a worthy bonus for a guy to pick up- a point for moving the chains.

That's what I do in the league I'm commish, I think 1/2 point is the right balance between making WR too dominant or too meaningless.

As for QBs, I still think the point per 25 yards and 6 pt TD is the best system. If you make it much more difficult for QBs to get points, you end up killing the middle to low end starters and really putting teams that didn't get a top 4 QB at a major disadvantage.

As commish, we've kept our scoring close to standard with some minor tweaks.

Any TD is 6 points. Sure this favors QBs, but QB is only 1 starting position of 9. Rush/rec yards are 1 point per 10, pass is 1 per 25. We get 1 point for every 3 receptions (this adds value to those that catch the ball, but doesn't add a ton). We also have bonuses for 125/200 rush, 150/200 rec, and 300/400 pass. they are 3 and 4 respectively for all of those.

For the league I run (18th year):

6 pts for rushing/receiving TD

4 pts to team QB for passing TD

1 pt per 25 yards combined rushing/receiving. Goes to 2 points starting at 150 yards.

1 pt per 50 yards team QB passing. Goes to 2 points starting at 300 yards.

No points for number of carries/receptions.

3 pts per field goal. Goes to 4 points for 50+ yards.

1 pt per sack,interception,fumble recovery.

Special team points (turnover,TD) go to defense.

Defense gets 10 pts for shutout, 6 pts for 2-10 against, 4 pts for 11-15 against.

Play 1 team QB, 2 RB, 3 WR/TE, 1 team K, 1 team D.

Always liked PPR in my league. But we also give .25 for running back carries, which rewards the workhorses as well. Pass completions are .20. Minus 2 for fumbles and INTs. 6 for all TDs. Yardage is 50 per point for passing, 20 rushing, 16 receiving and 25 on return yards. It gets interesting with 14 teams starting 2 QBs, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K and 8 Individual Defensive Players (IDP). Top 5 offensive players last year were Brady, Tomlinson, Romo, Westbrook and Moss, so it’s a good mix. On D we start two DBs, four DL or LB, and two more of either type. I would really like to see Yahoo! distinguish more on the IDP side so we could configure it better - where you had to start a DT, a DE, a corner, a safety, etc - but Yahoo! is not a good format for this.

I want to put in a plug for IDP here. If you've never had it in your league, trust me, try it once - I GUARANTEE you'll love it and never go back to "team defense." I can't tell you how enjoyable it is to watch Patrick Willis rack up 1 point every time he makes a solo tackle for my team in addition to all of the other stats going on. Plus on defense we also get 0.5 points for assisted tackles, 3.0 for sacks and INTs, 2.0 for forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, blocked kicks and safeties, and 1.0 for passes defended (a defender getting his hand on the ball). Of course, 6 for defensive TDs as well. A good defender in this league can be more valuable than a #2 WR. It brings back the "defense wins championships" quote because it's true when you have 8 guys notching stats on defense and 8 on offense along with a kicker. You know all of the good offensive players. A small number of free agents will put up good years. But defensive gems are constantly out there on a week-to-week basis, and the opponent matchup is often crucial. A guy like Terrence McGee was pure gold for years because of his status as a starting corner and a kick return specialist. Too bad for the owner that drafted him this year; he's hurt and seems to have lost his return duties.

Only 4 bench spots so there is NO hoarding. Every starting QB in the league is rostered, including many backups. During heavy bye weeks a few teams have to start a blank because they can't drop anybody, which makes it even more cut-throat. A very good week is about 200 points, and many matchups are decided by 5 points or less. It's sweet.

What, you are too lazy to come up with your own scoring system, so you simply copy ESPN's default settings?
