Showtime eating HBO's lunch with original programming.

Just a quick heads up for former HBO programming fans. I just started watching some of Showtimes orignal series on Netflix after hearing so many positive reviews. Dexter and the Brotherhood are incredible shows for those starving for original programming like HBO used to have. Not to mention Californication.

I wonder what HBO had for lunch to make Showtime want to eat it. I bet it was delicious.

Have you (or anyone else on here) watched or are watching "The Tudors"?

Its a brilliant show and a simply fantastic series (on King Henry VIII for those that dont know). I'd highly recommend it to anyone, especially those that liek historical shows. Also, you get to see boobs every single episode.

I'll never forgive HBO for killing Deadwood.

San Francisco !@#$s.

I would love to blame that on HBO but stupid David Milch, Deadwood's creator, felt he HAD to do another show and couldn't work on Deadwood anymore. That show? John From Cincinnati. Thanks David. Thanks a lot. The ones and zeros in Cass's camera say you're a butthead.

As long as we're bitching about these things I hated the ending to the Soprano's and how they just let story lines disappear. What the F ever happened to the Russian dude and Paulies car?

I read a really good explanation of the ending of the Soprano's and think it was probably right but it still sucked they just didn't play it out. ;)

Hands down the best Sopranos episode ever. If you miss the Sopranos, give the Brotherhood a chance. It isn't half bad.

Dexter, Californication and Weeds all great shows IMO.

I agree on Dexter and Californication...but I don't think Weeds is nearly as good as it thinks it is. I like it enough that I have watched every episode, but I almost got to the point this past (third) season, of not caring any more. Showtime, in its' early stages, seemed to be trying to out-HBO, HBO in it's edginess. Weeds is a prime example of this. Most of the characters are pretty annoying, as well written as the dialouge is. It just seems to meander enlessly, always looking for a quirky conclusion for every story line. The whole storyline about the uncle (Andy I think) getting a job as a porn actor in fetish films was just stupid.

Californication, IMO, started out a little slow, but just got better and better. Amazing dialouge, and Duchovney is great in it. I look forward to next season.

I have been on board with Dexter from the beginning, and think the second season was amazing. The first season (the one currently being butchered on CBS) was really good, but I hated the conclusion. My only, small, problem with the show, is that it could be a little better if it meandered a little more (like the Sopranos), and didn't tie up all loose ends so neatly. That is why I hated the end of the first season. I think that conclusion could have had a lot more juice if they carried it out longer, maybe even the length of the series.

I hear that Showtime has signed Edie Falco to star in new show, where she plays a nurse. Given the quality of the stuff that she is normally in, I will definitely give it a shot.

As for HBO, I still think their original programming is pretty good (I liked John Adams a lot, and, I love Real Time with Bill Maher, and Costas NOW!), but they are flailing a bit, in the drama area. Replacing the Sopranos is a big task. There have already been rumblings of a Sopranos movie, in the last few months. I am not holding my breath...

I still like Flight Of the Concords on HBO as well.

Ironically, just today, I cancelled my HBO and Showtime. I will pick them up when some of my favorite shows start again, but me and the Misses were having a real hard time remembering when the last time we watched an actual movie on either station. Cut our cable bill back from $85 to $63 with one phone call...
