Bills not likely to receive compensatory picks

BILLS LIKELY WON'T GET COMPENSATORY PICKS: The odds are very long that the Bills will be awarded any compensatory draft picks by the league around the end of the month. The formula for determining what teams get compensatory picks is rooted mainly in what's called a net loss of free agents. You basically have to lose more free agents than you sign. If that has happened then the quality of the free agents and the contributions to their respective clubs is also taken into account with a formula that is more top secret than the material used to make Burt Reynolds wig.

In any event the reason the Bills probably won't get any compensatory picks for 2007 is because in 2006 Buffalo signed 13 free agents (counting the Oliver Gibsons and Matt Morgans of the world) and only lost three of their own (Justin Bannan, Ron Edwards and Trey Teague) to other clubs. Players that they released like Sam Adams, Lawyer Milloy, Jeff Posey, Bennie Anderson and Mike Williams don't count because the team chose to release them. Without a net loss the Bills are out of luck.

---We got 8 picks this year, only 2 down from last years draft, well we actually had 9 picks because we traded our 2nd round pick to the bears to take there place in the first round to get john mccargo

If that is how they do the system, then I dislike it. I think quality (while subjective) should be placed higher than quantity. If the idea is truly to help out the teams that lost good players, then losing 1 great player and gaining 10 shtty ones should still net some sort of compensation.

Well considering we lost the BEST corner in league history (or just the richest) and London Fletcher: Worlds best midget linebacker.. then we should get a compensatory first pick overall next year.. If only the world worked with this logic.

In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of up to 32 picks dispersed at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.

If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft.

so to say we wont get any compensatory picks next year is wrong. We Lost the HIGHEST paid corner in the league and the midget linebacker. Regardless of the dockery signing we will still most likely get something next year.

While the formula for determining how comp picks are awarded is secret, there has NEVER been a case of a comp pick being awarded to a team who gained more qualified players (in number) in free agency than they lost. To state otherwise is just plain ignorance on the issue of compensatory picks.

Compensatory picks aren't awarded until the next year. So any compensatory picks this year are based off of 2006 Free Agency. We'll have to wait until next year to see if we get anything for Nate and London.

I know some folks have a problem with delayed gratifications, but life ain't all HotPockets®

Lost: Fletcher and Clements

Gained: Dockery and Langston

I dont think Gandy or Whittle will qualify. could be wrong.

You cant tell me that we wont sign another FA. It wont be another blockbuster deal, but signing an average role guy will push us over the top.

Doubt it....In fact if the bills do want to do well this year, then we won't get anything next year....We lost Fletcher/Clements/Gandy/Shelton (all UFA). We signed Dockery/Whittle/Walker. If Dockery and Whittle do well (actually bettern than Clements and Fletcher) then we won't get any picks...

Let me explain the formula in terms you can easily understand. Buffalo gets hosed no matter what.

Ah yes, the well-known Fudd's Law.

Nanker's Corollary to Fudd's Law - The only compensatory picks The Bills will experience are those of noses being picked on TBD.

Way back when the Bills received compensation for FA losses the year we lost Friggin Lonnie Johnson and in the black box world of compensation this pick was depicted as compensation for 'ol LJ. Given that almost all TSW denizens felt the team was improved simply because he left, we atill remain ahead of the curve as far as compensation goes.
