(OT) Jobs in Central NY/Southern Tier

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am not a regular poster, although I used to post a fair bit awhile back. I hate to just ask questions for my own help, but I am a sort of dilemma and am not sure of where to go, so I have been trying to get as much help as possible.

I graduated from school about five months ago. I met my soon to be fiance while at school and found out very early on that she wanted to be a veterinarian. I soon found out that she wants to go to Cornell's Vet School. She didn't get in the first time around, but she was very close and has done a couple of things that I think will get her into the school.

I love the girl, and the fact that we are currently apart, she's in New Jersey and I am in the Ithaca area has really depressed me. It also kind of bums me that while I currently am employed in a temp job at a university, it's not what in the stuff I want to be doing and I am not really learning anything at it. Basically, I am doing tech support. It seems to me that there are not really that many good jobs in Ithaca itself, unless you are a professor or something similar at some of the colleges nearby. So I want to work somewhere fairly close by, like within in an hour or so like, Elmira, Binghamton, Syracuse, but I am having problems finding any decent jobs that I am qualified for or that look like they could help me start a decent career.

I am not a pure sales-commission job kind of guy, but I have interest in business and investing/finance types of things (as well as media from my time at the student radio station) and would love to just start something small to learn the ropes if I have to. I just don't see the opportunities. I don't know too many people in the cities or areas I mentioned, so I am not sure where to start. I have looked at monster and careerbuilder and occasionally at the Post Standard Want Ads, but I haven't seen anything that looks right. I know the economy in Upstate New York has hit a lot of rough patches and I think it's evident by how many people have moved from New York State to other places on this board. But I want to be with my future-wife, or close to her, while she goes through vet school. We have gone out for four years and I know she's the one. I also love it in upstate New York as I like the changing of the seasons, I like the people here and I am a small-town kind of guy. Maybe what I am looking to do is pretty hard, but maybe there are opportunities are just am not seeing.

I know everyone has their own problems, and I hate to seem like a whiner or something here, but people here seem like smart folks who know the area and might be able to point me in the right direction in some way.

Try the temp-to-perm agencies in Syracuse, or hirer a head hunter. That's all I can suggest for the Syracuse region. The Post Standard ads aren't the greatest. Most people I know up here got their jobs because they knew someone that knew of an opening somewhere.

Good luck!

If your interest is in finance/investment... why not look at the local banks? The pay might not be great to start, but at least you have your foot in the door and have opportunities to advance... mortgage loan officer, branch manager, etc. Once you gain some expereince you might be able to narrow down what you specifically have a desire and skill for and move in that direction

Thanks for replying to me. Can I ask a couple of follow up questions? First, what are the names of the temp to perm agencies? Also, you're in Syracuse, what do you do for a living if you don't mind me asking?

I've tried to contact a few in Ithaca but so far, there don't seem to have any openings. Would I have to start at teller you think?

Jack, hired "head hunters" have a dubious reputation - along the lines of "earn $5,000 a month at home"... or "Let us submit your Invention to Industry"

Not all of them. There are ones that would always call my dad trying to get him to go work for companies that were looking for someone with his skills, even though he wasn't looking for a new job. The companies you're refering to should not be consider as head hunters, they are scam artists.

That's a possibility... but if your serious about going into this field and wqorking your way up, it's not a bad idea learning from the ground up. Even if you did start out as a teller, with a college degree you would probably move up very quickly.

All right, then a follow up question that might be answered by someone on this board. Is anyone here involved in investing sorts of things and living in upstate New York? I mean, is that doable?

Also, how does one get involved with a small business. Doing that seems exciting to me.

Good luck man - the upstate economy really does reek.  I had to move after finding nothing a year after school.  I was really depressed.  Just try to remember that you're not alone.

Cornell fiance?  At least you have a potential sugar-momma.

What did you do for that year, if you don't mind me asking. I like hearing people's story on how they got their stuff together, it kind of raises my spirits.

Haha, well actually she is a vegetarian too, although I still love her and she isn't the stereotypical all meat-eaters are evil kind of person.

Wait until you marry her. It only gets worse. Never better. There is a reason the bride is smiling at the altar.

There are more good jobs than good women. Go be with her and just keep looking till you find something. You're young so don't stress if it takes a little while to work into a job that is appropriate for your talents and career aspirations. You have a lifetime to build your career.

Good luck!
