August Movies: Snakes on a Plane, Talladega Nights

With the large amount of box office gold seized by Pirates 2 in the month of July, we now turn to the month of August, where most studios hold out hopes for some late summer box office gems, before all the children and teenagers head back to school.

The one movie that has miraculosly generated lots of buzz is New Line Cinema's "Snakes on a Plane". For a movie not to be based on previously written material, or not being a sequel, the anticipation is high. The title says it all. Samuel L. Jackson plays an FBI agent transporting back a criminal who will testify against a big crime lord. Ahhh, but the crime lord has other ideas. Fill the plane with every deadly snake in the world, so the guy will not talk.

Probably one of the most ridiculous movie premises ever, but people are ecstatic about it. The movies producers even went back to make additional filming to get their potential PG-13 rating bumped up to an R. The big question will be if this will be a one week wonder or if it will have durability.

Will Ferrell makes his summer debut this year, unlike last summer when it seemed the public could'nt get enough of him. Ferrell stars in "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby". There is'nt much plotwise, just a comedy invlving the NASCAR scene, enough said. Although some people have said that this movie has more to do with NASCAR than "Days of Thunder" did, interesting. John C.Reilly, Michael Clarke Duncan, & Gary Cole co-star.

Oliver Stone is back after his last flop "Alexander", now comes back to modern times with "World Trade Center". The second 9/11 movie this year which deals with the firemen trapped underneath the rubble of the WTC after the collapse. Nicolas Cage & Michael Pena are the leads here, with Maria Bello & Maggie Gyllenhall co-starring.

In the vein of "The Rookie" & "Miracle", Walt Disney Pictures releases "Invincible". If you do'nt know what this movie is about, then you obviously did not see any of the summer films this year, since the trailer of this movie was played with every single summer film this year. Mark Wahlberg plays real life Philadelphia Eagles fan Vince Papali, who one day gets his dream to come true, when the Eagles hold open tryouts. Greg Kinnear stars as Dick Vermeil.

There will be plenty of thrills this month:

Robin Williams plays a radio show host who travels from New York to Wisconsin, to search for a boy who sent him a very harrowing story in "The Night Listener".

Lions Gate releases "The Descent". A chiller from the UK about a group of women who go on a caving expedition, only to have things turn into a nightmare.

Veronica Mars' Kristen Bell headlines the delayed "Pulse". After their computer hacker friend accidentally channels a mysterious wireless signal, a group of co-eds rally to stop a terrifying evil from taking over the world.

There will also be plenty of family films:

For the third straight week we get another CGI animated movie, this time from Paramount Pictures, it's "Barnyard: The Original Party Animals". The animals in question are cows, who when every human is not looking are really a bunch of wild party animals.

Tim Allen plays a superhero in "Zoom". He takes his daughter to a special school where she learns of his secret and that the school is for superhero's kids. Did'nt they already make "Sky High"?

Finally there is "How to Eat Fried Worms". Based on the book of the same name, a 5th grader accepts a dare of the local bully, where he has to eat one worm a day for a period of time.

For the "younger" generations:

In the spirit of "Dirty Dancing" comes "Step Up", starring Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. It's a movie about dancing, which is all you really need to know.

In "Accepted", Justin Long plays a high school slacker who is rejected by every college he applies for. So naturally he creates his own, the South Harmon Institute of Technology.

"Idlewild", stars Andre Benjamin & Big Boi, who play two musicians during the prohibition era in the south.

The Broken Lizard men are back with "Beerfest". Can the USA defeat Germany in the ultimate beer competition in the world?

The Duff sisters teamup for the first time in "Material Girls". Hilary & Haylie Duff star as two cosmetics heiresses who receive a wake-up call when a scandal and investigation strips them of their wealth. Anjelica Huston co-stars.

Last but not least this month:

Edward Norton is "The Illusionist". Set in turn-of-the-century Europe, a magician tries to win back his long lost love who is now engaged to the crown prince of Austria. Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti, and Rufus Sewell co-star.

Also starring, Giovanni Ribisi, Brad Renfro, Piper Perabo, Brian Dennehy, Dennis Hopper, Lesley Ann Warren, And Val Kilmer.

Another festival favorite is the romantic dramedy "Conversations with Other Women", starring Aaron Eckhart & Helena Bonham Carter, who play a couple of strangers who meet at a wedding, then the rest of the evening together.

I'm going to see Talledega Nights this evening.  I really hope its not one of those movies where all the funny parts are played during the previews.  Also looking forward to seeing Ali G as the antagonist.

I saw a clip on Ali G yesterday....he's dating the 2nd hottest girl from Wedding Crashers, Isla Fisher....lucky bastard!

Of course, the hottest girl from that film was the lovely and talented Rachel McAdams

Not to prejudge the movie, but "Snakes on an Airplane"?  Worst title ever. It would be like calling Forrest Gump "Slow Man Achieves".

Actually I think calling Forrest Gump "Half-wit with !@#$ed up legs, falls in love with a whore, and miraculously ends up at every pivotal moment this country endured during his lifetime", would be more accurate.
