Donna Jean Godchaux, the singer best known for her work with the Grateful Dead during the 1970s, has died aged 78.

Godchaux, who also lent her vocals to classic hits such as Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds and Percy Sledge's When a Man Loves a Woman, died at a hospice facility in Nashville following a lengthy battle with cancer, Rolling Stone reported.

Godchaux joined the Grateful Dead in 1971 alongside her husband, Keith, who played keyboards. Her vocals were a key feature of the Dead's seminal run during the Seventies, appearing on such classic albums as Europe '72, Wake of the Flood, and Terrapin Station, not to mention countless legendary live recordings (including the famed Cornell '77 gig and the Dead's September 1978 shows at the Giza pyramid in Egypt).

RIP. The Dead were never the same after Keith and her left the band.

They werent "the same" for sure, but the second half of the 80s was PEAK.

I got to see Donna perform with Dead and Company at CitiField when she made a cameo. Performance-wise there was nothing notable to her being there but Im very grateful (haha) that I did get to see her perform next to Bobby.
