Love or hate death metal (I don't really listen to it), but Cannibal Corpse is legendary in the heavy music scene.  Alex Webster is a/the golden standard for death metal bass. Hammer Smashed Face has possibly the heaviest riff ever.

 

I only recently discovered King Buffalo and totally dig their music, but they are from Rochester.

King Buffalo is amazing. A bunch of my Rush fan friends are following King Buffalo across the US, since Rush isn't available for their concert dollar anymore.
