In all cases party thugs keep the citizens in line. In some cases they're not even socialists. So called socialists in the US just want to tax away profits from private businesses and citizens incomes and redistribute the benefits from the work of others to their political base and the groups that keep them in power. Marxists/Socialists/communists....just call them all commies and you'll be just fine.
