But months later, that same Democrat shocked DC by unveiling a surprise deal cut behind closed doors with Chuck Schumer, resurrecting key elements of that same agenda. The result was the so-called 'Inflation Reduction Act,' and its bloating Green New Deal spending and historic expansion and empowerment of the Internal Revenue Service. Upon further review, the folks back home were not impressed. The ostensibly moderate and independent Democrat didn't seem so moderate or independent anymore, handing his party an unexpected legislative gift in the run-up to key election. Public opinion instantly soured. And the politician in question, West Virginia Senator Joe Minchin, has been backpedaling ever since. Thursday's ruling likely will add a blue seat in Alabama, and could add more in Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas. That could go a long way toward offsetting potential GOP gains in North Carolina and Ohio. Driving the news: The high court ruled that the GOP's congressional map in Alabama — where the population is 27% Black — violated the Voting Rights Act by slicing up majority-Black areas so that only one of the state's seven districts (or 14%) had a majority of Black residents. Democrats could pick up one seat with a revised Alabama map — and other southern states with similar legal fights, including Louisiana and Georgia, also could be forced to draw new maps that net the party additional seats. She flipped a South Texas seat from a 100 year dominance by Democrats to Republican in 2022. She was the first Mexican-born congresswoman. Flores is running again for the seat she lost in November. She made history in June 2022 by winning a special election in Texas’ 34th Congressional District seated in Brownsville. Republicans have set their sites on flipping South Texas from blue to red and her victory was a huge boost for Republicans. She ran for a full term last November and lost to U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez by 8.5 percentage points. The McAllen Democrat ran in the 34th congressional district after the 2021 redistricting cycle. Last November Republicans ran Flores and two other Republican women in districts that were targeted to be flipped. Only one won, though, and Flores lost her race. Flores is ready to rumble. Incumbent Democratic Governor Andy Beshear is running for reelection against his Republican challenger, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron. For the better part of the summer, Beshear – touted as one of “America’s 5 most popular governors” – has maintained a steady range – between 4 to 10 points – in his lead over Cameron. But it might not be all moonlight and roses for the popular governor coming into the home stretch. Cameron has a pretty solid record of his own that he’s running on, which has come into open conflict with Beshear’s big blue policies several times. There’s also a well of simmering resentment over Beshear’s handling of the COVID lockdowns. He may have led the state to a “strong recovery,” but how he led through the pandemic itself is a sore point to this day with many residents, and they are quick to remind people of it. Beshear also vetoed the Kentucky legislature’s anti-gender affirming care for minors bill, saying it would “increase suicides” and allow “excessive government interference in personal health decisions.” He expressed no concern about saving children from irreparable harm or sparing them irreversible surgeries for a lifetime of pain and suffering. Fortunately, huge majorities in both houses of the legislature allowed Kentucky lawmakers to override that veto. This is part of the “culture warrior” shadow the media is trying to cast on Cameron and make him scary to swing voters, along with “right-wing, school choice billionaires” financing him and the Trump endorsement. All the boogiemen of classic Democratic demagoguery. I don’t think it’s going to stick and it’s certainly not going to stop Cameron.
