I think it is even stretching it calling it a "family city"

Rochester is a run down version of Buffalo.

Umm, are you nuts? Buffalo is a friggin dump. Hey, I love the dump, but it is what it is.

I love Rochester. I live in Brighton, and it's close enough to the city to keep me happy, but still a suburb with great schools.

When I was single I lived in the Park Ave area, and had a blast. Lots of parties, some good bars, etc. Certainly not in the class of Chicago or NY or whatever, but it's a mid-sized city with culture, etc. There's some great food, as well.

But that's just me.

Yeah, it was pretty tough to discern that from the question/response post the link was in.  Happy Monday, sixer!

Yes, well, you must pardon me, I just got out of a two-hour staff meeting. So my brain's not operating at its usual 25% capacity.

I've lived in both Roch and Buffalo - Rochester is an oustanding place for families - particularly on the "east" side, but there's not too much going on at night. That said, like anywhere else, the experience is what you make of it, and if you can find ways to enjoy some great restaurants and appreciate certain outdoor activities (the surrounding area is incredible), you will enjoy it greatly. I prefer Buffalo, but Rochester is very viable alternative and can certainly keep you busy. One disclaimer - this is not the place you want to be without a car.

A great place to check out would be on Ave. D or Conkey Ave.

<_< Nice place, but I was thinking more like the Joseph Ave, Cuba Place area myself.

Rochester is a great place to raise a family, but living here all of my 37 years, it was a little dull at times in my single days. Don't get me wrong, I still managed to have a good time, but nightlife seems to be dying a slow death around here. Great restuarants, great minor league sports, there is always a Wegmans within 3 minutes and all your other needs are usually reachable within 15 minutes.

One more good point. Niagara Falls, the casinos and the Canadian Ballet are all within a 90 minute ride.

I always liked the fact that, besides the advantages Rayzer cites, if you like both major pro sports AND big-time college basketball and football, Rochester is virtually equidistant from Buffalo and Syracuse. (Don't try to tell me that UB football and Canisius/Niagara/UB hoops compare in any way to Syracuse. They don't.) If you live in Syracuse, you've got the D-I bigtime right there but it's a 3-hour drive to the Bills and Sabres. If you live in Buffalo, you have the Bills and Sabres but it's a 3-hour drive to see the 'Cuse. In Rochester you're no more than an hour and a half from either city. (OK I'm fudging a bit -- it's farther to Syracuse than to Buffalo, but not substantially so.) And I've heard the Syracuse Ballet isn't bad either. <_<

And now Rochester has D-I hockey (RIT) and D-I lacrosse (Hobart) close by, plus model IL and AHL franchises in the Wings and Amerks, plus the Knighthawks, Rattlers and I guess the Rhinos (if you like soccer... I don't). I like to think we have the best of all worlds here. And let's not even get started on golf, shall we, because golfing opportunities here far outstrip what's available in Buffalo (both recreationally and professionally).
