Busted Ankle: Call Doctors or Go To ER?

PTS

Recommended Posts

I rolled my ankle real bad this Saturday. It swelled up to the size of a softball. I iced it for two days and the swelling is very minimal right now but there is bruising under my ankle which I noticed this morning. I can walk but gingerly and with an obvious limp, I hope I just sprained it but am fearing that it might be broken.

Anyways, should I wait it out? Go to the ER (which will cost me a $100 bucks) or call my doctor? Can he have me sent anywhere else other than an ER to avoid the cost?

Insurance sucks now!

Most likely it's a sprain if you can put weight on it and the swelling went down.

They can be very painful. I would call adoctor first and describe it.

Good Luck!

I can stand with all weight on that ankle with no pain but if I lean to one side or the other, the pain is bad.

I agree that its a sprained ankle and not broken. I have broken many bones and none have hurt as some of my ankle rolls. Get an ace bandage for getting around and keep ice on your ankle to keep swelling down. See a Doctor and skip the IR. I like to see sports doctors for these sort of injuries. They are specialized and have seen it all

I think you should post on a message board for medical advice. It's all the rage...

(Call your doctor, and ask him whether you should go to the ER or not. You risk doing even more damage waiting for an appointment with an orthopedist...but the level of that risk is best estimated by you and your doctor.

Also, if you haven't yet, wrap it or put a brace on it. My wife sprained her ankle several years ago, refused to wear a brace, and the ligaments were still so loose that she very promptly broke it and spent 6 weeks in a hard cast.)

I bought an ACE bandage yesterday and it definitely helps. I will now begin the three hour task of trying to get a hold of my doctor's office.

I'm just worried because I had what I was told was a "sprained wrist" when I played hockey up in Canada about six years ago. Turned out to be a broken bone and I had to have surgery to fix it three years after. I went to the same Doc that the Sabres and Bills used.

Hey man, don't knock on TSW. One can get through life with advice provided by fellow Wallers, albeit, a messed up life.

Go to work, then tell them you fell down the stairs. You'll get to spend the day in the ER reading the Sports page and back issues of People magazine on their dime. If you're lucky you'll get to hear two of the most beautiful words in the english language..."workman's comp." I envy you, brother.

I think you should google the symptom's and follow what ever recommendations you get. There used to be a google expert from NJ here, but she seems to have gone by the wayside to bigger and better things.

You need it X-Rayed asap. Once they read the X-Ray they will know if it is a break or sprain. This is serious stuff because it could set wrong and then they'd have to re-break it to set it right. That would suck.

Under my insurance I would see my primary care doctor. He would order the x-ray. Then the x-ray office would tell my doctor if it is broken. Based on that my doctor would send me to a specialist.

When they ask you what level is your pain on a scale of 1 - 10 ALWAYS tell them it is either an 8 or 9. That way they will take you seriously and you may get good painkillers. Keep saying I'm an 8, I'm an 8.

Good Luck !

YIKES....go see the doctor

I know a little something about this (and shamefully I must admit this)

2 years ago my son rolled his ankle in practice (was drive blocking a D Linemen and got rolled up on by another player)

- Swelled up big....iced immediately....he was able to put pressure on it

- Didn't want to go to the doctor....swelling went down from the ice........big game was the following day

Went out and played an entire half against arch rival Riverside....finally came out at halftime....

I started getting a very bad feeling after that game.....took him home and got him off his feet and took him to the Doctor first thing that following Monday. Turns out he had a fricken cracked bone in his ankle. casted down for 2 months.

Dont mess around with these types of injuries.
