maybe not, Management said they are being aggressive this offseason!

There was a report that came out that had an agent say that the Jays are doing Diligence on everyone, but 905 of it is just Diligence and isn't going any further then basically just checking in.....

They have made offers, but players are turning them down and taking less elsewhere (moustakis turned them down after they met at his house, Gregorious turned them down after he said they could give him alot of time at Short, One of the pitchers took a shorter deal with the Mets, a few others decided to just go back to their teams.) Looking at some of the guys they are going after, I don't understand why they couldnt wait to get rid of Stroman.

Wilner assures us that winning is just around the corner...

The Yankees owner isn't the richest one. The Yankees spend their money. Other owners keep theirs and are mediocre and are okay with that.

Blue Jays are probably richer, but the owner won't pay the team more than low-market fees for the TV rights.

the whole thing is just an advertisement for the cable monopoly that owns the team

but THIS is just fine and lah-dee-dah, as long as the Yankees aren't signing the man...  :(

Report: Hyun-Jin Ryu Expected to Sign Larger Contract Than Madison Bumgarner

I wouldn't be surprised, I assumed Bumgarner was older then he was cause he seems to be wearing down. Ryu was runner up for the NL CY Young last season. I think he ends up an Angel after declining any offers from the Dodgers who seem to want everyone else over him. Can't see him choosing Toronto even if they make a huge offer. I would rather see them make an effort to get Keuchel and maybe even Tehran or another next tier FA.

The Yankees spend their money, but they also make alot more then almost everyone else. The problem in Toronto is that their ownership is a corporaion and not an individual owner. They can't just spend whatever they feel like. Most teams today are making most of their revenue from big TV deals, but the Jays ownership owns the station so they can't get a huge TV deal like others. Since they are owned by a corporation, they are also a bottom line team where they have to turn a profit or atleast break even because of the shareholders. It sucks because they are in one of the biggest markets but act like a small market team.

ownership chooses to not invest in the team to be competitive with the top spenders

and it doesn't seem to care about building a winner like the Rays have with a mere fraction spent compared to the big boys

they simply don't care to contend, fiddle-dee-deeeee

or they hope the Bos/NYY/TB nexus has 2 teams crater in a given year

Yep, but the sport is dying. No interest in about 70% of teams.

Revenue is up 69% since 2010.  It's not even close to dying and cannon fodder still makes the owners money via the television deals and revenue sharing.

Baseball is doing just fine financially.

Yeah MLB is doing great financially.

And youth baseball enrollment is experiencing record growth in the US..........millions more kids playing now than just 5 years ago.

Declining enrollment in youth football is unfortunately a concern for us football fans.

True.

The Yankees don't spend anywhere near the % much of their reported revenue on payroll as they used to.

Their revenues have more than tripled since 2002 and the actual payroll hasn't risen much since the early 2000's.

George used to be happy with a Ralph-like $30M annual reported income............Hank's Yanks are pocketing a lot closer to a half billion annually.

a lot of small salaries in the NYY starting lineup, a few will be getting a nice pay raise soon

Yeah but they only have $130M committed for 2021...............so Hank will be keeping his $500M annual profits and loaded roster for several years.........at which point MLB observers expect the luxury tax and draft pick attachments to be eradicated which was part of their rationale for splurging on Cole.

I still don't expect Hank to raise payroll much then though.........they are making radical changes and big investments into their farm system so they can always have more good cheap young players than most.    Their record streak of winning seasons will probably continue for another decade at least but whether they win any World Series who knows.   The Dodgers have 7 straight division titles and zero WS titles.

Blue Jays getting Ryu at 4 years $80 million

Im a little skeptical on this one, I want to like it because they are getting a Cy Young Runner up at a decent rate and he is head and shoulders better then what they have, but why did the Dodgers seem to want to sign everyone else but him this offseason? Theres not much left in the FA market and they just seemed to go after everyone else.

I would still like to see the Jays make a deal to get Price from the Red Sox too to round out the rotation, then possibly get Encarnation back and they won't be fighting for the basement next year

bring all the talent to the AL East, nice that Boras will answer phone calls from the Jays again (been awhile)

I think he always would, it was AA that never answered them when he was GM. He couldn't stand him and trying to make deals with him (don't blame him) and it's why Boras always bashed the Jays when he spoke about teams not willing to spend.

The guy goes from whining about collusion between owners not wanting to sign big deals last year to negotiating over $1 billion in deals this offseason.

I kind of like the rumor of the Jays talking to the Red Sox about Price, add him with Ryu and the Jays can have a solid rotation this year (if they stay healthy). Jays would only make the Price deal if the Red Sox retain a big chunk of salary though.

good to see the Jays improving in the offseason, miles to go to the top of the AL East though, would enjoy a few years in the AL Central..

Yeah, must be nice not having the Yankees/Red Sox in the same division. The league should just make a division with them (maybe add the Angels too since they want to spend like them) while the Jays, Orioles, and Rays are moved to the Central and west....

i'd support a perfectly balanced schedule for the AL

no reason they cannot accommodate this with ease
