They have made offers, but players are turning them down and taking less elsewhere (moustakis turned them down after they met at his house, Gregorious turned them down after he said they could give him alot of time at Short, One of the pitchers took a shorter deal with the Mets, a few others decided to just go back to their teams.) Looking at some of the guys they are going after, I don't understand why they couldnt wait to get rid of Stroman. Wilner assures us that winning is just around the corner... Ryu was runner up for the NL CY Young last season. I think he ends up an Angel after declining any offers from the Dodgers who seem to want everyone else over him. Can't see him choosing Toronto even if they make a huge offer. I would rather see them make an effort to get Keuchel and maybe even Tehran or another next tier FA. The problem in Toronto is that their ownership is a corporaion and not an individual owner. They can't just spend whatever they feel like. Most teams today are making most of their revenue from big TV deals, but the Jays ownership owns the station so they can't get a huge TV deal like others. Since they are owned by a corporation, they are also a bottom line team where they have to turn a profit or atleast break even because of the shareholders. Their revenues have more than tripled since 2002 and the actual payroll hasn't risen much since the early 2000's. George used to be happy with a Ralph-like $30M annual reported income............Hank's Yanks are pocketing a lot closer to a half billion annually. I still don't expect Hank to raise payroll much then though.........they are making radical changes and big investments into their farm system so they can always have more good cheap young players than most. Their record streak of winning seasons will probably continue for another decade at least but whether they win any World Series who knows. apuszczalowski Posted December 23, 2019 Share Posted December 23, 2019 Blue Jays getting Ryu at 4 years $80 million Im a little skeptical on this one, I want to like it because they are getting a Cy Young Runner up at a decent rate and he is head and shoulders better then what they have, but why did the Dodgers seem to want to sign everyone else but him this offseason? Theres not much left in the FA market and they just seemed to go after everyone else. He couldn't stand him and trying to make deals with him (don't blame him) and it's why Boras always bashed the Jays when he spoke about teams not willing to spend. I kind of like the rumor of the Jays talking to the Red Sox about Price, add him with Ryu and the Jays can have a solid rotation this year (if they stay healthy).
