McDermott: "You need your quarterback to play well on a consistent basis"

As per usual to start the work week, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott joined WGR Sports Radio 550 after his Monday press conference with the media.

Here are some of the notable comments from McDermott's time with Mike Schopp.

11-12: Kyle Williams on WGR (13:11)

Williams - As a whole my job is to make sure we're staying focused and supporting whoever is playing QB.

Williams on Barkley - For him to understand defenses and reads, it's a credit to Matt. The way he came in, worked, learned, came into the game and executed.

Williams - Two big plays, bang bang, it's a touchdown. That energy runs its way through the football team.

Williams - To see what happened yesterday, turnovers, scoring quick, going for it on 4th, that's infectious.

Williams - I've watched a little Jacksonville film already. We have a late bye. Really going to try and get away from it. Let the body and the mind rest.

11-12: Sean McDermott on WGR (13:12)

McDermott on Allen being ruled out vs. NYK - I would say he was close. The signs started to present themselves that he wouldn't be able to go.

McDermott on Allen's injury - No setbacks. Just a natural progression of a player coming back from injury and we knew we had the bye coming up.

McDermott - I was around a situation in Philly years ago where AJ Feely came in and won some games for us, but when the starter was back, the starter played.

McDermott - Josh is our starter. He'll remain our starter, when healthy. Although I thought Matt did a great job, Josh is the starter.

McDermott - When you look at young QBs, you have to take it with a grain of salt. There will be bumps in the road. It's all about Josh's development and experience.

McDermott on Allen's last performance vs. Houston - Thought he was playing his best game of the year, made his best throw of the season on the play he was injured.

McDermott on having 4 QBs - There's not a whole lot of teams that carry four. Have to try and re-balance the board here as things settle down.

McDermott - Thought there was a need to increase our team speed on offense. You saw that with Foster and Isaiah McKenzie. That opened things up.

McDermott on Wyatt Teller - Wanted to know a little more about one of our young players. He handled himself well, but wasn't perfect.

McDermott - This late of a bye is a little unusual and unique. It's been a grind, will be good to get a little rest.

11-26: Kyle Williams on WGR (13:22)

Williams on Fournette - Guy pushes someone in the back and starts throwing punches, I mean that's ridiculous.

Williams on the brawl - We get the stop and the missed field goal right after. Huge turning point of the game. As pivotal a moment as there was.

Williams - We did a good job of going from a high emotional situation that got out of control to locking back in and focusing.

Williams - It was a tough, hard fought win. Good for our team. Give some of our young guys a chance to be in a bloody nosed battle.

11-26: Sean McDermott on WGR (15:45)

McDermott - I've been in a few fights in my life.

McDermott on the Jags rivalry - It's easy to see the connection with coach Marrone, the playoff game, and they like to talk a little.

McDermott - I think it's important players play not afraid to make a mistake. If they do it more than once, than we're going to have a conversation.

McDermott on Robert Foster - Speed is a commodity in this league. We felt like he had the potential to develop into a real receiver. You don't often get the combination of size, speed, & toughness.

McDermott - That's fair right? As long as they call it both ways. They're human. As long as it evens out by the end of the game or the end of the season.

McDermott on Robert Foster: "You don't often find his combination of size, speed and toughness"

What an afternoon it turned out to be in Orchard Park yesterday. In wake of a highly-contested 24-21 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott joined Schopp & the Bulldog as part of WGR Sports Radio 550's Football Monday festivities.

Here is some of the best from McDermott's time on WGR.

12-3: Kyle Williams on WGR (12:25)

Williams - If you look at what we've done this year, we've played some really good defense. We haven't held up our end of the bargain with turnovers and we have to be better in the red zone. #Bills

Williams on Allen - What's exciting is what he can do with his arm, with his legs, & what he can do on the run. Plays breakdown, one spy is not enough to bring him down. He's a hard guy to play man coverage against. #Bills

Williams on Allen - He can do a lot of different things at a high level. He's only going to get better. #Bills

Williams on penalties - At the most important times we have to play hard, but also smart. Don't want to put the team in a tough position. #Bills

Williams on Hughes & the refs - Jerry called him out on it. That's something that should be looked at outside of this building. You really don't see it much, but I have seen it. Some guys have a reputation for doing that. I think it's being looked at. #Bills

Williams on the Jets - We played McCown the first time, we weren't really sure who would play last time. Darnold is more of a move around to throw guy. #Bills

Williams: "Josh Allen is only going to get better"
Bills defensive tackle Kyle Williams joined Schopp and the Bulldog to discuss yesterday's loss to the Dolphins

The start of the work week marked another Buffalo Bills Football Monday in this NFL season, and as usual defensive tackle Kyle Williams graced the airwaves for a chat with Schopp & the Bulldog.  Williams recapped yesterday's tough loss to the AFC East foe Miami Dolphins, and the weekly growth of Josh Allen.

Here is some of the best from Williams' time on WGR Sports Radio 550.

12-3: Sean McDermott on WGR (13:41)

McDermott on defending QBs like Allen - It's a headache. The mobility of these young QBs creates a problem. #Bills

McDermott on the final play - What you probably didn't see was Zay Jones coming open over the middle. Josh had to escape the pocket. One of those opportunities we weren't able to take advantage of. #Bills

McDermott cont'd - Our protection broke down too early. Josh had to go off schedule. #Bills

McDermott on Clay on the final play - Charles got open. Credit to him for that, but would've liked to see him come back to Josh a little bit. #Bills

McDermott on being 1/10 on challenges - There's times you don't have a good look at it, or it's close. One out of ten is not where I want to be. I thought yesterday with potential points on the board, we wanted to take a good look at it. #Bills

12-10: Kyle Williams on WGR (10:52)

Williams on the hit on Hauschka - When a guy's not looking at you, especially a specialist, it's a cheap shot for sure. #Bills

Williams on the hit on Hauschka - At the end of the day that can be called a personal foul, so you try to teach guys to stay away from that hit. #Bills

Williams on Darnold's scramble & TD pass - You have to give him credit, he made a play and we didn't when we had a chance. #Bills

Williams - If you can find a silver lining, the young guys had an opportunity to go out and put it on the line, and can now finish the season strong. #Bills

12-10: Sean McDermott on WGR (12:36)

McDermott on Allen fumble - We work it in practice. Taking care of the ball is important. Sometimes you can get away with stuff in college up big at the half, but games come down to the wire in the NFL. #Bills

McDermott on Allen - The NFL is different than college. He's seen that now, as has Tremaine. You see some guys that don't take the next step in their second year, & there are some that do. This will be a very important offseason. #Bills

McDermott on Allen running - You have to defend everyone on the perimeter and the quarterback. Whether it's zone reads, or QB designed runs, or him scrambling, those are hard to defend. #Bills

Sounds like McDermott always expects Allen to be a serious running threat.

Good, that's part of what makes him special.  Just continue working on his pocket passing, which I think is light years better than the national narrative presents it.

12-17: Kyle Williams on WGR (13:46)

Williams on new guys stepping up - It gives a lot of people an opportunity to see what the makeup of the team is. #GoBills

Williams on Marcus Murphy - You feel bad for guys when that happens. Especially him, how well he's played & how hard he works. He'll come back from it stronger. #GoBills

Williams on Patrick DiMarco - He put me in the dust on the yardage there. What'd he get 7,8,9 yards? #GoBills

Williams - In the 1st half especially, a lot of their chunk plays were 50/50 balls. Almost had a pick on one. At halftime we decided there wasn't a reason to do anything different. #GoBills

Williams on no sacks in back to back weeks - It's such a sexy stat, but as long as you're pressuring a QB like Stafford. #GoBills

Williams on going for it on 4th to win the game - When you have a big strong QB like Josh, you should be able to pick up a foot no problem. You got a guy that's 6'5", 240 pounds.  #GoBills

The fifth victorious Buffalo Bills Football Monday of the year was upon us, and so too was the presence of Bills' head coach Sean McDermott.  Buffalo moved to 5-9 with their one-point win over the visiting Detroit Lions.  Next up, you ask?  Why, none other than the New England Patriots on December 23rd at 1:00 p.m. in Gillette Stadium.

Before we get too ahead of ourselves, here is some of the best from McDermott's time on WGR.

12-17: Sean McDermott on WGR (12:39)

McDermott - It's nice to see we have some young players that hadn't played before getting a chance. #GoBills

McDermott on Keith Ford - He carried the ball two or three times in a row and started to tap, which means he was tired and wanted to come out. Brian (Daboll) called another run play. #GoBills

McDermott on Josh Allen -  He did have more time than in the weeks prior. When you can give the QB that amount of time it allows the young QB to go through his reads. #GoBills

McDermott on how the Lions played Allen - They did spy Josh. He did a good job with it and read the coverage. Key passes and key moments of the game. #GoBills

McDermott on 4th down decisions - In an ideal situation I wanted Stephen's first kick to be more manageable. We tried to pin them deep and didn't. That's something we need to continue to work on. #GoBills

McDermott - Want to expose Josh to more and more situations like that. He'll grow from those experiences. #GoBills

McDermott on final 4th down sneak - He wanted the ball in his hands. When you have a big QB, if you can't get an inch, you don't deserve to win the game. #GoBills

McDermott on Allen - At the end of the day, his development is a big part of this process. He's led a couple of come from behind victories. That's a box you want to be able to check. Not concerned about his ability to bring us back in games. #GoBills

It's annoying because a) it's demonstrably false and b) it's a fair assumption this is the same line of thinking the Pegulas have based on their first two hires as HC.

That's probably why McBeane keeps repeating the Buffalo weather BS, because the owner said it was important, lol. So clueless.
