I live just outside of Middlebury, but my school district central office is in Rutland so I am there frequently. Rutland has a bad reputation for crime/drugs, but it's not a bad little town, IMO. I think it gets overblown because Vermonters in general are biased against anything resembling "city life." There are very nice parts of Rutland to live, and there are parts to stay away from. It actually reminds me a great deal of my home town (Auburn, NY). PM me if you are serious about this and have any questions.

Maybe it's gotten worse with meth being around. *shrug*

If you're not into the drug scene you can avoid it, although you will likely see some "itchy scratchys" floating around town. I have a co-worker who lives 5-6 blocks from downtown, and he has a home in a pretty nice neighborhood. He has a wife and three small children, and he has nothing but good things to say about where he lives and the community in general. FWIW.
