I guess it’s a matter of perspective.

It certainly is.  If I were older and had a wife and kids my views on good places to live would likely change drastically.

I'd consider this. My boss recently informed me that I had the option to go 100% telecommuting. I'm going to be doing it, so at that point could probably move anywhere. I think I could live with Rutland being my home.

I live just outside of Middlebury, but my school district central office is in Rutland so I am there frequently.  Rutland has a bad reputation for crime/drugs, but it's not a bad little town, IMO.  I think it gets overblown because Vermonters in general are biased against anything resembling "city life."  There are very nice parts of Rutland to live, and there are parts to stay away from.  It actually reminds me a great deal of my home town (Auburn, NY).  PM me if you are serious about this and have any questions.

My aunt and uncle lived there when I was a child. I spent many weeks during the summer there and it never seemed bad. Maybe it's gotten worse with meth being around. *shrug*

It's just like any other small town nowadays.  If you're not into the drug scene you can avoid it, although you will likely see some "itchy scratchys" floating around town.  I have a co-worker who lives 5-6 blocks from downtown, and he has a home in a pretty nice neighborhood.  He has a wife and three small children, and he has nothing but good things to say about where he lives and the community in general.  FWIW.

What do you mean by the northeast kingdom?  What town?  North of Burlington near Saint Albans?

Sorry I missed this in your post yesterday

St. Albans isn't NEK.

My Bro inlaw was born near Jay. They don't live in the NEK now... But close... Near the Quebec line.

You know all about VT and never heard of the Kingdom?

Showering humor aside... that is a tragic outcome for the young man and his family

It takes a village.

Oh, gotcha.  I guess I haven’t heard of that area referred to as the NEK.  I’ve been up that way several times for my son’s hockey games in St. J and Lyndon.  That area is absolutely beautiful.  You’re a moron ??

Who's the bigger moron?  You probably put 2 & 2 together when I called it: NEK.  Of course you've saw those gay Euro/region oval decals w/NEK on them. ?

Hammersticks... What's going on in VT?

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2018/06/07/617897261/cdc-u-s-suicide-rates-have-climbed-dramatically

You would think they would be offing themselves here in Aleppo rather than picturesque VT?  +48%-60% increase in suicide?

Must be the soul crushing remote jobs?

?

I don’t know.  Perhaps the sharp rise in suicide rates here coincide with your last visit?  Did you happen to speak to lots of people while you were here?

I skied Jay Peak way back in 2013.

And no, just hill folk... ?

There it is.  The EIL ripple effect.  Folks would rather do a swan dive into the shallow end of the pool than listen to you chirp on about invasive aquatic species and man-made waterways.  Poor Jay Peak lift operators.  Do us a favor...steer clear of the green mountain state for a while until we recover.  Deal?
