The Patriots clinched yet another first-round bye, after the Jaguars lost to the 49ers on Sunday. NFL Week 16: Takeaways from Sunday's games Sunday of Week 16 has ended with several teams punching their ticket to the playoffs and a few eliminations. Here are some of our big takeaways from the games today. Patriots 37, Bills 16 1. Losing 16-13 early in the third quarter, New England reeled off 24 unanswered points to put Buffalo's postseason livelihood in jeopardy. Tyrod Taylor absorbed five sacks, failing to lead a touchdown drive against the Patriots for the second time this season. The Bills will need to win at Miami and hope for an improbable confluence of upsets to befall the Ravens, Chargers and Titans in the regular-season finale. 2. One of the reasons Taylor failed to lead a touchdown drive? The NFL's labyrinthine "process of the catch" rule reared its ugly head once again, this time in a two-play sequence that cost Buffalo a crucial touchdown to close out the first half. In a play eerily similar to Jesse James' controversial non-catch in Week 15, tight end Charles Clay corralled the ball in the end zone only to lose control as he made contact with the ground. One play later, Kelvin Benjamin's spectacular catch was overturned on a protracted replay-review session that failed to show incontrovertible evidence in either direction. We shall commence our annual plea for the Competition Committee to head back to the drawing board in determined search of a fix to the convoluted catch rule that leaves coaches, players, analysts and fans scratching their heads on a weekly basis. 3. With both Rex Burkhead and James White sidelined, offseason acquisition Mike Gillislee resurfaced for his first reception of the season as well as his first touchdown since Week 2. The former Bills back touched the ball just seven times, though, while Dion Lewis and All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowskicarried a Patriots attack that hasn't come close to clicking on all cylinders in over a month. Gronkowski had a bigger impact than the boxscore might suggest, pulling off a spectacular one-handed touchdown over Micah Hyde and drawing a 29-yard pass interference penalty to set up Gillislee's 1-yard score. The Bills got inside of New England's red zone a total of four times, but didn't come away with a single touchdown. One of the reasons the Bills struggled is because they couldn't protect Tyrod Taylor, who got sacked six times. We'll also give the refs a "D" for controversially overturning an apparently touchdown catch by Kelvin Benjamin. Patriots: B+ If you started Dion Lewis in Fantasy Football this week, then you're probably going to want to give the Patriots an "A+" for their game plan in this game. With James Whiteout of the game, the Patriots turned almost exclusively to Lewis, who carried the ball 24 times for a season-high 129 yards and a touchdown. Just for good measure, he also tacked on another 24 yards receiving and another touchdown. Lewis didn't have to completely carry the team though because Rob Gronkowski came through with another Gronk-like performance, catching five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. The Patriots also racked up six sacks in this game, which was a completely unexpected performance from a team that went into Sunday's game averaging just 2.3 sacks per game on the season. Benjamin discussed his touchdown that was later overturned following review and how the team needs to do a better job of getting into the end zone when it reaches the red zone. MCCOY: "YOU PUT SO MUCH INTO IT" (3:00) Bills' RB LeSean McCoy spoke to the media following the team's game against the patriots. McCoy discussed some of the controversial calls from the game and provided his thoughts on why the team struggled in the second half. WATCH: PATRIOTS PULL AWAY IN FOURTH QUARTER (2:39) Buffalo struggled offensively in the red zone, and the Patriots scored 24 unanswered points as they came away with a 37-16 win over the Bills. Clark agrees with non-catch ruling (1:51) Ryan Clark says at first look, it appeared that Kelvin Benjamin scored a touchdown, but the NFL correctly followed "the letter of the law" like several other instances this season. Benjamin is not upset after 'no-catch' rule (0:45) Kelvin Benjamin tells Sal Paolantonio that he knows the "catch" rule and he believes he caught that ball but understands that he needed to move on. Bills LVP: OC Rick Dennison - The constant infatuation with Mike Tolbert, along with a bootleg delayed fullback screen that went for negative-eight yards led to unsatisfactory results — especially considering that the Bills had been driving the ball down the field and completely ruined the momentum of that drive. Up Next: The Bills take on the Miami Dolphins in the final week of the season on the road on December 31. The game has been flexed to 4:25 pm, and they’ll play at the same time as the Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, and the Los Angeles Chargers — the three teams they’re competing with for the Wild Card spots. Jeff Saturday is full of crap. The Bills didn’t let that play dictate their mentality as they came out of halftime and put together an impressive drive to go up 16-13. The defense is getting gashed in the second half. Your down by seven with 13 to play against the greatest qb ever. Its 4th and 1 and you decide to kick a friggin field goal. Like you expected the damn defense to suddenly become the 85 bears and 3 and out this team the rest of the game? Bad gutless coaching. Period. Exclamation point. You had to take chances to have any chance against a superior team and you crawled into a corner, got into a fetal position, and sucked your thumb hoping and praying the boogieman would just go away.
