Early Mock Draft

I don't normally have a go at a mock until after the initial wave of free agency and often not until the last couple of weeks before the draft.

However, today was a quiet day in the office... so I had a bit of fun and thought I'd share.

Current Mock draft 2016

1 – TRADE! San Francisco 49ers – Quarterback - Jared Goff

The 2016 draft goes off with a bang as the 49ers jump the Browns to secure the Quarterback at the top of both their boards – Jared Goff. The Cal Bear gets stay in the state as Chip Kelly second time around accepts that his scheme is not enough to cover up average Quarterback talent.

2 – Cleveland Browns – Quarterback – Carson Wentz

What then happens at #2 is anyone’s guess. I can see Hue Jackson considering trading out of this pick with Goff off the board to give them a chance to re-group but the pressure on the Browns to find their franchise Quarterback eventually forces their hand. They take Wentz rather than letting someone else come up and grab him.

3 – San Diego Chargers – Defensive Back – Jalen Ramsey

The Chargers secondary needs playmakers. Their defense was woeful last year and Ramsey is, for me, the most talented all round football player in this draft. Whether he ends up at corner or safety he is a huge upgrade for San Diego.

4 – Dallas Cowboys – Linebacker – Myles Jack

Don’t believe the hype that the Cowboys might take a Quarterback at #4 overall. That is a classic pre-draft smokescreen. They want a defensive play-maker. Whilst Joey Bosa might come into the mix here they could bank on a year 2 step forward from Randy Gregory and instead add to a linebacker corps which is often missing Sean Lee to injury and where Rolando McClain is a free agent.

5 – Jacksonville Jaguars – Offensive Tackle – Laremy Tunsil

Luke Joeckel is a bust. The Jaguars might have the long sought after answer at Quarterback in Blake Bortles now they need to put the key pieces in place around him. A franchise blindside protector is #1 on that list. If Tunsil makes it to number 5 as he does in this mock the Jags would sprint to the podium.

6 – Baltimore Ravens – Outside Linebacker – Joey Bosa

The Ravens are another team desperate for defensive play-makers. Jalen Ramsey is likely their top target – but he is gone in this mock so they go for edge rush… because Terrell Suggs coming back from a serious injury cannot go on forever. The great Baltimore teams have generated pass rush and that is what they need to get back to.

7 – From 49ers: Tennessee Titans – Offensive Tackle - Ronnie Stanley

The Titans were probably hoping that Ramsey or Tunsil was still on the board at #7 but even with both gone the positional decision remains the same – Stanley an offensive tackle or Hargreaves a corner? They go Stanley in this mock who comes in as a day 1 starter at right tackle and gives them a potential option down the road of flipping to the left side.

8 – Miami Dolphins – Cornerback – Vernon Hargreaves

Which leaves Hargreaves for Miami. They have two major areas of defensive need. I think their pathetic linebackers are a bigger concern than the defensive backs but Hargreaves is better value here than Ragland. Jaylon Smith could be the wildcard.

9 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Defensive Line - DeForest Buckner

The Buccs need defensive line help badly. They could double up on D-linemen in this deep class in the first and second round but Buckner, a versatile guy who can play inside or outside, would undoubtedly be of interest here at #9.

10 – New York Giants – Edge Rusher - Noah Spence

Ditto the Giants. When Steve Spagnuolo ran a Superbowl winning defense in New York they had explosive pass rushers. Noah Spence may have some character concerns but he is a top 15 talent and he would be an instant upgrade for the Giants anaemic pass rush.

11 – Chicago Bears – Inside Linebacker – Reggie Ragland

What team loves a big, tough hitting, middle linebacker more than the Chicago Bears? Reggie Ragland can be the heir to Singletary and Brian Urlacher.

12 – TRADE! Los Angeles Rams – Quarterback - Paxton Lynch

Desperate for a Quarterback and worried that the Eagles will take Lynch at #13 the Rams jump up for boom or bust prospect Paxton Lynch.

13 – Philadelphia Eagles – Defensive Tackle – A’Shawn Robinson

With the consensus top 3 Quarterbacks off the board the Eagles look to give new defensive coordinator the pieces to make his defense work. He needs horses up front. Fletcher Cox already gives him some ability on the edge but when you think successful Schwartz defences you think Haynesworth, Suh, Dareus…. A’Shawn Robinson is his interior disrupter.

14 – Oakland Raiders – Linebacker - Jaylon Smith

The Raiders are not yet in “win now” mode and so are maybe one of the few teams who can afford to wait if Jaylon Smith is not ready to start the season. He is a big addition at a major area of need and their patience would likely be heavily rewarded.

15 – From the Rams: New Orleans Saints – Cornerback – Mackensie Alexander

The Saints can afford to move back because they need help all over the defense and this is a first round rich in options. However, their biggest need is in the secondary. Alexander is a plug and play day 1 starter.

16 – Detroit Lions – Defensive Tackle – Robert Nkemdiche

When the Lions lost Suh and Fairley in the same off-season they lost their big and nasty in the middle of the defensive line. Enter Nkemdiche to give them a bit of bite back in the trenches in an increasingly physical NFC North.

17 – Atlanta Falcons – Defensive End - Shaq Lawson

The Flacons need pass rush, pass rush and some more pass rush. First year Head Coach Dann Quinn did a decent enough job in Atlanta but he needs people who can get after the Quarterback to really make his defensive scheme work. Shaq Lawson looks a good scheme fit opposite Vic Beasley.

18 – Indianapolis Colts – Centre – Ryan Kelly

Surprise choice this early? It shouldn’t be. The Colts flipped and flopped between two backup level players at the anchor position on the line last year as whoever was under centre took a weekly beating. If this football team is going to get back to being a contender in the AFC they need to start looking after Andrew Luck a little better. Ryan Kelly is pro-ready and would be a huge upgrade.

19 – Buffalo Bills – Defensive Tackle – Jarran Reed

I don’t think this is the Bills ideal outcome a #19 but with many of their top targets long gone they have a decision to make. Billings is still on the board who would be more of an out and out nose tackle but Reed is a little more versatile and is still a space eater who can stop the run which might free Marcel Dareus up to get back to what he does best and could spell the end of Kyle Williams and his $8million salary.

20 – New York Jets – Linebacker - Darron Lee

The Jets linebackers were an under the radar weakness in 2015. A bit of youth and speed would be a welcome addition to that unit. Darron Lee is an outside guy who could transition inside and that versatility is likely to appeal to Todd Bowles who loves speed on defense.

21 – Washington Redskins – Cornerback – Eli Apple

This feels like a perfect fit to me. The Redskins need help in their secondary and Apple is a taller, rangier corner that fits what the team is looking for.

22 – Houston Texans – Running Back – Ezekiel Elliot

Houston want to be a running football team. Arian Foster can’t stay healthy and Alfred Blue and Chris Polk are not legitimate long term options to carry the load. Zeke’s arrival allows the Texans to move on from Foster and give whoever is under centre next season a complimentary running game.

23 – Minnesota Vikings – Wide Receiver – Laquon Treadwell

The Vikings need a genuine #1 receiver. Treadwell might lack elite speed (let’s see how he runs at the Combine) but he is the consensus #1 receiver in this draft and if he is still there at #23 he would seem the obvious pick. Wouldn’t be amazed if the Vikings go for a different receiver here though.

24 – Cincinnati Bengals – Defensive Tackle – Sheldon Rankins

Cincinnati needs additional push from the interior of the defensive line. Sheldon Rankins is a penetrator and whilst I don’t have him quite rising as fast as some he is likely a first round pick and would be a nice fit here.

25 – Pittsburgh Steelers – Defensive Tackle – Andrew Billings

I am not sure nose tackle is the Steelers’ biggest need (that is the secondary) but they could use an upgrade and if Billings is still on the board at #25 he represents better value than any of the corners or safeties remaining.

26 – Seattle Seahawks – Offensive Tackle – Jack Conklin

The Seahawks have to get better up front if they want to remain a genuine contender in the NFC. Russell Okung might be healthy by the time next season starts but he is an impending FA who is publically looking elsewhere. If Conklin and Decker are still on the board expect one of them to be the pick.

27 – Green Bay Packers – Linebacker – Deion Jones

The Packers line Clay Matthews up inside and they generate no rush from the outside. They line him up outside and teams run right at the middle of them. He can’t play two positions at once is what I am saying. Deion Jones is a speedy, versatile, linebacker and whilst he might be a small reach at the end of the first round it is a major need in title town.

28 – Kansas City Chiefs – Safety – Karl Joseph

All Kansas City’s safeties are free agents. If none of them are back they will need at least one from this draft. In these circumstances Joseph becomes the first pure safety off the board.

29 – Arizona Cardinals – Edge Rusher – Leonard Floyd

When I watch Leonard Floyd I get the impression that he is a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none. But as a situational pass rusher who can do other things too he might be a good fit in Arizona’s aggressive attacking defense.

30 – Carolina Panthers – Offensive Tackle – Taylor Decker

Michael Oher seemed to be a revelation for the Panthers after being rescued from the scrap heap and plugged in at left tackle….. that was until Denver demolished him in the Superbowl. In addition, the weakest starting position on their offense all season was right tackle so taking Decker who has a bit of edge to him would be a wise move to upgrade at least one of those two positions.

31 – TRADE! Houston Texans – Quarterback – Connor Cook

The first round ends as it begun…. With a team trading up for a Quarterback. A lot of people think O’Brien will covet Christian Hackenburg later in the draft but I suspect Cook fits his offense as well and they make a move to grab him here before the eyes of some of the teams drafting early in the 2nd light up.

Reed beasted at the Senior Bowl, I wouldnt be mad at that pick at all. You all think Darren Reed is Better then Sheldon Rankins?

  • 1 month later...

Okay, so here is my version 2 post the opening exchanges of Free Agency.

1 – Tennessee Titans – Laremy Tunsil

The Titans ability to trade out of this pick relies on a team coveting the Quarterback that they think the Browns will take at #2. I no longer think the 49ers believe that to be a risk and therefore the Titans stand pat at number 1 and take the top offensive lineman on the board. Plugging him at left tackle might allow them to slide Taylor Lewan inside to guard or flip him to the right side.

Pick Change – Previously – 49ers picking Goff

2 – Cleveland Browns – Quarterback – Carson Wentz

I still believe that the Browns will take Wentz but that is because the noises from the Combine indicate that he has jumped Goff to be the top guy on their board. Wentz might not be as obvious an immediate fit for Hue Jackson but the Browns appear to love his upside.

Whilst Joey Bosa might come into the mix here, given the news regarding Randy Gregory, they could instead add to a linebacker corps which is often missing Sean Lee to injury.

5 – Jacksonville Jaguars – Defensive End – Joey Bosa

I was previously mocking Tunsil to this pick but he is now off the board and the Jags spent in Free Agency to add Kelvin Beachum as Luke Joeckel’s replacement at left tackle. I think if Myles Jack fell this far he would be the pick. But he doesn’t in this mock so they take Joey Bosa to line up opposite the returning Dante Fowler Jnr.

Pick Change – Previously – Laremy Tunsil

6 – Baltimore Ravens – Offensive Tackle – Ronnie Stanley

The Ravens made a major push to retain the versatile Kelechi Osemele and promised to play him at left tackle and pay him accordingly. That indicates to me that the team could be thinking about moving on from Eugene Monroe and having lost Osemele to the Raiders they could be in the market for a tackle and so they snag Ronnie Stanley.

Pick Change – Previously – Joey Bosa

7 – San Francisco 49ers – Quarterback – Jared Goff

For the 49ers being able to stand their ground at #7 not give up anything and still pick Jared Goff is the dream scenario. Is he the Quarterback to finally give Chip Kelly’s offense what he wants? Maybe… and the 49ers seem certain that Colin Kaepernick isn’t.

Pick Change – Previously – Titans picking Ronnie Stanley

8 – Philadelpia Eagles – Cornerback – Vernon Hargreaves (from Miami)

The Eagles acquired this pick by sending Byron Maxwell (along with Kiko Alonso) to the Dolphins. That was an astute dump of a high priced free agency bust of a corner, but it does leave a hole at that position. Vernon Hargreaves is the top corner on the board and should be an upgrade at the position.

10 – New York Giants – Defensive End – Shaq Lawson

Same position, change of player for the Giants. When Steve Spagnuolo ran a Superbowl winning defense in New York they had explosive pass rushers. Noah Spence had a disappointing combine performance and so Shaq Lawson might now be ahead of him on a lot of boards.

Pick Change – Previously – Noah Spence

11 – Chicago Bears – Quarterback – Paxton Lynch

The Bears have done a solid job of filling holes during the first week of free agency and that gives them real flexibility at #11. They still need some D-line help but this is a deep D-line class and they can pick up starters in later rounds… so maybe they swing for the fences and draft their QB of the future? Lynch needs to go somewhere where he sits in 2016 for my money and this would be an ideal spot for him.

Pick Change – Previously – Reggie Ragland

12 – New Orleans Saints – Defensive Tackle – Sheldon Rankins

The Saints could use help throughout the secondary, but they also need ammunition upfront. Rankins is a physical, disrupter on the defensive line and he will be an immediate upgrade in the trenches.

Pick Change – Previously – Rams picking Paxton Lynch

13 – Miami Dolphins – Running Back – Ezekiel Elliott (from Philadelphia)

The Dolphins let Lamar Miller walk and then couldn’t do a deal for CJ Anderson who stayed in Denver. They have Jay Ajayi who they picked in the 5th round last year but they do not see him as an every down back so Elliot, the likely only first round running back in this class, is headed to Florida.

Pick Change – Previously – Eagles picking A’Shawn Robinson

14 – Oakland Raiders – Linebacker - Jaylon Smith

A lot of people now have Smith falling out of the first as rumours abound that he will miss the whole of 2016. However, the Raiders are not yet in “win now” mode and so can maybe afford to wait if Jaylon Smith is not ready to start the season coming off knee surgery. He is a big addition at a major area of need and their patience would likely be heavily rewarded.

15 – Los Angeles Rams – Wide Receiver – Laquon Treadwell

The Rams absolute #1 need is at Quarterback but with the top 3 off the board here they go to the second glaring hole on their football team - they lack a quality wide receiver. Laquon Treadwell did not run at the combine and the speed doubts remain, but he is too good for the Rams to pass up here.

Pick Change – Previously – Saints picking Mackensie Alexander

16 – Detroit Lions – Defensive Tackle – Robert Nkemdiche

When the Lions lost Suh and Fairley in the same off-season they lost their big and nasty in the middle of the defensive line. Enter Nkemdiche to give them a bit of bite back in the trenches in an increasingly physical NFC North.

17 – Atlanta Falcons – Linebacker – Reggie Ragland

I have been mocking pass rushers to Atlanta, but Reggie Ragland might be the best player on the board by this point and with the depth on the defensive line in this draft they could take the chance to snag an NFL ready impact maker at a position of need.

Pick Change – Previously – Shaq Lawson

18 – Indianapolis Colts – Centre – Ryan Kelly

Surprise choice this early? It shouldn’t be. The Colts flipped and flopped between two backup level players at the anchor position on the line last year as whoever was under centre took a weekly beating. If this football team is going to get back to being a contender in the AFC they need to start looking after Andrew Luck a little better. Ryan Kelly is pro-ready and would be a huge upgrade.

19 – Buffalo Bills – Linebacker – Darron Lee

The Bills need help at linebacker and the fact that they have been quiet in free agency so far indicates to me that they will look for that help in the draft. I previously had Lee going a pick later to the Jets but he could land in Western New York where he would immediately slot into the Will spot vacated by Nigel Bradham.

Pick Change – Previously – Jarran Reed

20 – New York Jets – Linebacker – Leonard Floyd

With Lee off the board the Jets could address another position at #20, but I suspect that they will still be looking for some help at linebacker. I had mocked Floyd to the Cardinals previously, but the Bowles influence means that the Jets scheme is pretty similar to the one he left in Arizona and he would be a fit here too.

Pick Change – Previously – Darron Lee

21 – Washington Redskins – Cornerback – Eli Apple

Jarran Reed and A’Shawn Robinson still being on the board could influence where Washington goes at #21, however, this still feels like a perfect fit to me. The Redskins need help in their secondary and Apple is a taller, rangier corner that fits what the team is looking for.

22 – Houston Texans – Wide Receiver – Will Fuller

Houston need offensive weapons. Will Fuller with his 4.3 speed would be a nice compliment to the size and strength of DeAndre Hopkins.

Pick Change – Previously – Ezekiel Elliott

23 – Minnesota Vikings – Wide Receiver – Corey Coleman

The Vikings need a genuine #1 receiver. With Treadwell and Fuller off the board the choice is likely to be between Baylor’s Corey Coleman and Josh Doctson from TCU. I think Coleman’s YAC ability probably makes him a better fit for the short passing game that is Teddy Bridgewater’s bread and butter.

Pick Change – Previously – Laquon Treadwell

24 – Cincinnati Bengals – Defensive Tackle – A’Shawn Robinson

Cincinnati needs additional push from the interior of the defensive line. I had Rankins going here in my previous mock, but with him gone, it probably comes down to a choice between the two Alabama guys. Robinson is, for me, a better scheme fit in their defense.

Pick Change – Previously – Sheldon Rankins

25 – Pittsburgh Steelers – Cornerback – Mackensie Alexander

The Steelers biggest need is the secondary. Alexander would be a day 1 starter at corner.

Pick Change – Previously – Andrew Billings

26 – Seattle Seahawks – Offensive Tackle – Jack Conklin

The Seahawks have to get better up front if they want to remain a genuine contender in the NFC. Russell Okung has moved on to Denver which only exacerbates the problem. If Conklin and Decker are still on the board expect one of them to be the pick.

27 – Green Bay Packers – Defensive Tackle – Jarran Reed

The Packers major need remains at inside linebacker but I think stopping the run needs to start upfront as well. Jarran Reed is an absolute steal at this point in the draft and would be a huge improvement as a run stuffer up front.

Pick Change – Previously – Deion Jones

28 – Kansas City Chiefs – Safety – Karl Joseph

The Chiefs franchised Eric Berry but their 2nd and 3rd safeties still walked in free agency. Given that a 1 year franchise tag gives them little long term certainty with regards to Berry, safety still looks the priority. In these circumstances Joseph becomes the first pure safety off the board.

29 – Arizona Cardinals – Defensive End – Noah Spence

The Cardinals love bringing pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Noah Spence may not have shone at the Combine and may have character concerns but he is the best player on the board by this point in the draft and could have an impact as a rotational end in year 1.

Pick Change – Previously – Leonard Floyd

30 – Carolina Panthers – Offensive Tackle – Taylor Decker

Michael Oher seemed to be a revelation for the Panthers after being rescued from the scrap heap and plugged in at left tackle….. that was until Denver demolished him in the Superbowl. In addition, the weakest starting position on their offense all season was right tackle so taking Decker who has a bit of edge to him would be a wise move to upgrade at least one of those two positions.

31 – Denver Broncos– Quarterback – Connor Cook

Whoever the Broncos end up signing in free agency is likely a stop-gap Quarterback. The guy they have spent 4 years developing just ran off to Houston for stupid money… they already have a great defense and a nice collection of offensive weapons… so why not take a shot at a signal caller?

Nice work! IMO Elliott won't be there for the Fish and they will wish they hadn't traded down. I think he's one of the top 4 or 5 players in the draft and someone will grab him earlier. At least I hope he doesn't go there - lol.

Good call in Ryan Kelly - can totally see that and would like that pick by Indy a lot. But it might just be too smart for Grigson.
