Many southerners I have met explain it like this - they set the huge race issues aside (typically thru the eye of how the world viewed slavery in 1860) and talk about the unfair tariffs at that time & states rights vs. federal rights.  They also lost almost the same number of ancestors (60/40).  So they view the naming of a couple of the rebel leaders that retained their dignity (notice Jefferson Davis isn't named for sh*t) as a way to retain their rebelliousness.  A reminder that they'll go along, but do need to their viewpoint be heard.  Like it or not, it's become their regional identity.  Undoing that slowly drives that old wedge back into place.

BS.  I was born in Texas and lived there 40+ years.  I never once heard anyone that lives there say slavery or the civil war is their "regional identity".  Sure, horrible history happened there and the people I knew certainly aren't proud of it.

I always viewed the south's identity to be music.  Rock, blues, Jazz, and c&w all started there and is the birthplace of many great musicians.  Like the Charlie Daniels song lyrics.

The schools had their names changed back.

"We appreciate your dedication to our schools and the well-being of our students, Restoring these names would demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity, respect for history, and responsiveness to community feedback."

The group's letter stated Confederate Gens. Jackson and Lee, and Cmdr. Ashby have historical connections to Virginia and the commonwealth's history

Yup, a connection in fighting to keep black people enslaved

Yeah. Cause electricity is so racist and regressive.

Does UPenn still have the china fusion center and the Biden center in it?

Seems that school has bigger issues than a statue.

During his life, Franklin had many careers including service as a diplomat, a printer, a writer, an inventor, a scientist, a lawmaker, and a postmaster, among others. In his later years he became vocal as an abolitionist and in 1787 began to serve as President of the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery. The Society was originally formed April 14, 1775, in Philadelphia, as The Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage; it was reorganized in 1784 and again in 1787, and then incorporated by the state of Pennsylvania in 1789

Scranton Officials Demand for Biden’s
Name to Be Removed from Landmark

by Sarah Arnold

Pennsylvania Officials of outgoing President Joe Biden's birthplace are demanding that his name be removed from a prominent local landmark following his controversial decision to pardon a federal judge involved in a cash-for-kids program that jailed thousands of juveniles in the state.

The move has sparked outrage in Scranton, where Biden has deep ties, with many arguing that the pardon tarnishes the president's legacy. The expressway, which honors Biden's contributions to the city and the country, now faces renewed scrutiny as local leaders demand that his name be stripped from the site in response to the controversial pardon.

Biden Removing Monument that Celebrates National Reconciliation

DAVID STROM

Arlington National Cemetery is hallowed ground.

Its history is tied to both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War–the Arlington Estate was originally created as a tribute to George Washington by his adopted grandson, and by an odd quirk of fate, Robert E. Lee wound up temporarily possessing the property at the outbreak of the Civil War. The federal government seized it for military purposes, and it became the site of our most prestigious national cemetery.

The Civil War was, by far, the most deadly war in our history, with over half a million American deaths. At the turn of the 20th century, Congress agreed to intern Confederate soldiers at Arlington and allowed the erection of a monument that became known as the “Reconciliation” monument–a celebration of the country coming back together.

After the George Floyd riots, the federal government decided to take down monuments with a connection to the Confederacy and to eliminate anything that could be interpreted as celebrating, justifying, or acknowledging the Confederacy as anything other than evil. As part of this effort the “Reconciliation Monument” was put on the chopping bloc.

It’s not a memorial to the Confederates

Everyone but you understands this.

It was put up by all Americans decades after the war, to celebrate the

RECONCILIATION between us.

Stay in your little hate filled cocoon

no one expects any more of you.

Yeaahhhhhh.

Eternal Light Peace Memorial at Gettysburg.

It was unveiled by Union and Confederate veterans. Contained references and symbolism to the whole nation. Commemorated specifically "American Heroism".

Hegseth just returned an monument funded by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, that only talks about the Confederacy and Confederate dead, and has a latin inscription containing the words lost cause. And was originally unveiled on Jeffeson Davis' birthday.

Which one of these sounds like a reconciliation monument?
