October Movies: Cloud Atlas, Argo, Taken 2, & Frankenweenie....

The days of Autumn have arrived and soon the big Holiday movie season will be upon us. But before all of that happens, the month of October wraps up the "Adult" Season of movies as more potential Oscar contenders appear. Also with Halloween approaching, there will be moviegoers looking for a good scare, but there is surprisingly little offerings from that department, unlike years past. Like last month there is plenty of diversity to satisfy all moviegoers.

Looking to return to relevance, again, are the Wachowski siblings. Although this time they may have found the right material in the form of "Cloud Atlas", Tom Tykwer is also directing. An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. This sprawling Drama/Sci-Fi holds a deep cast which includes, Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving & Jim Broadbent. After the disappointing "Matrix" sequels, the mild reception to "V For Vendetta" and the disaster of "Speed Racer", the Wachowski's are desperate for a hit. Curiosity is high and Tom Hanks' name will help.

Ben Affleck pulls double duty again, as he directs and stars in "Argo". Based on actual events, As the Iranian revolution reaches a boiling point, a CIA 'exfiltration' specialist concocts a risky plan to free six Americans who have found shelter at the home of the Canadian ambassador. Also starring Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin & John Goodman.

Four years ago Liam Neeson lead an action/drama to unexpected box office gold, now a sequel has finally arrived in the form of "Taken 2". In Istanbul, retired CIA operative Bryan Mills and his wife are taken hostage by the father of a kidnapper Mills killed while rescuing his daughter. Also starring Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, D.B. Sweeney & Rade Serbedzija.

Tim Burton returns to his Disney animation roots with a re-make of a famous short he made back in 1984; "Frankenweenie". Young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences. Starring the voices of Charlie Tahan, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau & Christopher Lee.

As I stated before there will be some scares delivered for Halloween.

Continuing it's impressive run with an actual sequel is "Paranormal Activity 4". It has been five years since the disappearance of Katie and Hunter, and a suburban family witness strange events in their neighborhood when a woman and a mysterious child move in. Starring Katie Featherston, Kathryn Newton, Matt Shively & Brady Allen.

Ethan Hawke stars in "Sinister". Found footage helps a true-crime novelist realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.

Sean Bean & Radha Mitchell star in "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D". When her father disappears, Heather Mason is drawn into a strange and terrifying alternate reality that holds answers to the horrific nightmares that have plagued her since childhood.

For those not interested in horror, there are plenty of other options.

In "Pitch Perfect", Beca, a freshman at Barden University, is cajoled into joining The Bellas, her school's all-girls singing group. Injecting some much needed energy into their repertoire, The Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition.Starring Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson & Anna Camp.

In "Fun Size", Wren's plan to attend a huge Halloween party thrown by the guy she likes goes awry when she's put in charge of her oddball little brother, who quickly wanders off on his own. Starring Victoria Justice, Johnny Knoxville, Chelsea Handler & Ana Gasteyer.

In "Alex Cross", A detective is told that a member of his family has been murdered. He vows to track down the killer. Starring Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox, Rachel Nichols & Edward Burns.

In "Here Comes the Boom", A high school biology teacher looks to become a successful mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money to prevent extra-curricular activities from being axed at his cash-strapped school. Starring Kevin James, Salma Hayek, Henry Winkler & Greg Germann.

Finally in "Chasing Mavericks", When young Jay Moriarty discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson to train him to survive it. Starring Jonny Weston, Gerard Butler, Elisabeth Shue & Scott Eastwood.

Nice! As always, the Indy list is even more interesting to me than the studio stuff....although there are certainly a few on the first list I want to check out, as well.

Very interested to see that Zeppelin film! I finally got around to seeing The Doors and loved it....that resulted in an interest in checking out a few other Doors films, each of which was very interesting and entertaining. Truly one of the most fascinating bands, and lead men, of all time.

Went to see Looper today. Fantastic movie. I highly recommend it to almost anyone.

I also saw Sinister today. I've been wanting to see both for a while now and finally had the chance today. While it is not as high of a recommendation as Looper, it was a solid movie too. Better than your average Horror movie. If you have seen the trailer and it looks like a movie you'd like I'd suspect you'd like it.

Nice...I loved Looper. I have some buds who were disappointed by it, but I was thoroughly entertained. I'll have to check out sinister for sure. It's nice to see Ethan Hawk's cheating ass getting some higher profile roles again...I've always thought he was a solid actor.

I saw Argo yesterday. The whole thing made me realize that back in school, nothing ever touched on these Iran days. None of my history classes every went much beyond WWII. That just drives me crazy.

But anyway, I enjoyed it, especially since my showing started at 1PM.
