They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' -1 Timothy 6:9-10

"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. I missed the verse about food stamps, welfare checks, section 8, and getting more taxpayer $ for every bastard child you have. Guess I better skim through my bible tonite before bed, it's got to be in there somewhere.

"Render unto Caeser what is Caeser's, so he can render unto the poor what is rightfully theirs."

even more difficult to comprehend that so many in this group staunchly defend a literal interpretation of the bible even when scholarship and history show that to be clearly not intended. do they find these passages to be apocryphal or just ignore them? sadly, certain christian groups and current times are not unique in this selective interpretation of religious works.

What? We have maybe three devout Christians here who would defend a staunchly literal interpretation of the Bible. What board are you reading?

Pretty sure he's proving that you are, with your every response. Moran.

You have your hobbies,

And I have mine.

So piss off.

The original poster has the mental acuity of a drunken mosquito and thought he was addressing everyone on this board who believes in the concept of "ownership". It's a perfectly natural interpretation of your response to believe that your statement of "this group" referred to the posters here, given that you were responding to the original poster, and that you have the mental acuity of a slightly more sober mosquito.

Verily do I enter into religious discussions. While I'm not Frenkle, I think that MDP's views should be considered. A fundamentalist Christian state should be considered along with an Islamic state. Let's put it to a vote. In all seriousness, in MDP we've found the fourth devout Christian that is a staunch fundamentalist. My question to the moderators, is do we need a fourth? I'm not one to want to ban anyone, but the War and Peace length posts are a little ridiculous. Maybe a gentle hint to tone it down?

"perfectly natural" for you, in no way implies " the natural order of things" which i don't think you'd recognize if it fell out of a tree onto your head.

you somehow find this offensive yet post homoerotic imagery on a semi- regular basis? haven't heard you call out loudly for censure of racist posters, either.

Can you restrain yourself to beating on the real posters? Not just people here making up positions for fun.

Trolls need beatings too.

That's a rather inaccurate accusation. "Semi-" regular?

I, for one, do not support this. I like my racists out in the open, in full view, so I know to avoid them.

This thread is bad. The difference with Helping the poor comes down to one side believing charity or private establishments giving help or the government/state should help.

I think both should exist. We have to help/support the poor in some form. Medicaid, Food Stamp programs, and some welfare programs are good but clearly are being abused and need some reform.

I hate the idea of just getting rid of the programs in whole. Actually I don't even take people serious when they say that.

What about simply a negative income tax rate ala Friedman?

I'd generally agree...except for Medicaid. That program's such a bureaucratic morass that putting a metaphorical bullet through its metaphorical skull would be a distinct improvement. The complete cancellation of that program would ironically improve the quality of care provided under said program. :wallbash:

Mostly, I'm just against open-ended social programs, under the logic that it "feels good". I've no problem with government programs that help those in need or who've fallen on hard times to get out of need to back into good times. But I'm not particularly keen on programs that disincentivize personal effort and responsibility. At the risk of over-simplification: it's the difference between helping my niece with her homework, and doing it for her.
