April Movies: American Reunion, The Raven, and The Three Stooges....

After seeing the previews for the 3 Stooges movie, I think it looks like an embarrassment. Like the Farally bros not only spit, but then turned around and dropped a few deuces on all the real Stooges graves (even Schemp and Joes). I wouldn't expect this movie to be anything better then the Brady Bunch movies that were made.......(Characters from a different time trying to adjust to Todays society with all the "jokes" based around that)

Against all odds, I actually liked "American Reunion." Same old stuff, but no matter how stale it is, it still brings a smile to my face. Also appreciated the fact that it came full circle in a way.

If you're talking about what I think you are (and you must be), yes, that was great. It pretty much had to happen.

If you haven't seen Cabin in the Woods, go see it. One of my favorite horror movies of all time. A very original movie.

I don't recall ever seeing a horror film with a rating that high on Rotten Tomatoes...looks like a good one!

At the risk of sounding like a complete kitty, is it super gory?

Yes. But it's got so much more going for it. Don't just dismiss it as another dumb slasher movie. Because that's not what it is at all. I don't want to say too much in order to convince you, but don't just take my word for it, as Ajzep points out it's getting insanely good reviews for a horror movie. There are gory parts, but you don't ever feel that they're unnecessary or unwelcome. It might not be for everyone, but it's aims of my favorite horror movies and one of the most original in that genre that I've seen.

You've sure got me sold on it, Fong'er...I can't wait! The horror genre tends to frustrate the hell out of me. It's easy to make a great TRAILER for a horror flick, but much harder to make a film worth a damn. I'm dying (no pun intended) to see a horror film that doesn't insult my intelligence or go for nothing but cheap thrills. I'm hopeful this may be the movie I've been waiting for.

Sounds like you'll have a good time.

I think the most important thing about Cabin in the Woods is that it's an actual movie, not just some actors milling about for an hour and a half saying things. It reminds me of what it's like to go to a movie and not have 75-100% of the plot figured out before you've seen the movie.

That's exactly why I stopped wasting money on horror films at the theater. Too many times I just felt ripped off instead of entertained. The horror genre has a rich heritage in terms of the movie experience, but it seems over the last twenty years or so it's been cheapened to the point of absurdity. From time to time there were films that caught my interest since they seemed to actually involve some sort of character development and didn't rely just on cheap thrills. I would love to see a horror "renaissance", so to speak.

Okay. I'll admit it. I saw the preview for The Three Stooges, and I'm looking forward to seeing it. The preview may be the best part of the movie, but I don't care. The three guys NAILED the impersonations.

Went and saw the stooges today...loved it! Highly recommend it..first 10 minutes kinda suck..but gets way better from there

Here are this month's Independent Films:

Jack Black, Shirley Maclaine, Matthew McConaughey & Rip Torn star in "Bernie". A Renaissance man-community leader-mortician Bernie strikes up an unlikely friendship with a wealthy but very particular widow. When he kills her, he goes to great lengths to maintain the illusion that she is still alive.

Kevin Kline & Diane Keaton star in "Darling Companion". The story of a woman who loves her dog more than her husband. And then her husband loses the dog. Also starring Richard Jenkins, Mark Duplass, Elisabeth Moss & Dianne Wiest.

"The Giant Mechanical Man" is a comedic love story between Janice, a woman in her 30’s who has yet to learn how to navigate adulthood, and Tim, a devoted street performer who finds that his unique talents as a "living statue" don’t exactly pay the bills. Out of work and forced to move in with her overbearing sister, Janice is on the receiving end of well-intentioned but misguided pressure to date an egotistical self-help guru, who complicates her search for what her heart really desires. Starring Jenna Fischer, Chris Messina, Malin Akerman & Topher Grace.

In "Jesus Henry Christ", At the age of ten, Henry James Hermin, a boy who was conceived in a petri-dish and raised by his feminist mother, follows a string of Post-It notes in hopes of finding his biological father. Starring Jason Spevack, Toni Collette & Michael Sheen.

"The Lady" is the story of Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, Michael Aris and the epic story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma's democracy movement. Starring Michelle Yeoh & David Thewlis.

In "Damsels in Distress", A trio of girls set out to change the male-dominated environment of the Seven Oaks college campus, and to rescue their fellow students from depression, grunge and low standards of every kind. Starring Greta Gerwig, Adam Brody & Analeigh Tipton.

In "Touchback", A man looks back 15 years to the injury that ended his career as a promising high-school football player. Starring Brian Presley, Melanie Lynskey, Marc Blucas, Christine Lahti & Kurt Russell.

In "Bad Ass", A Vietnam veteran who becomes a local hero after saving a man from attackers on a city bus decides to take action when his best friend is murdered and the police show little interest in solving the crime. Starring Danny Trejo, Charles S. Dutton & Ron Perlman.

In "Keyhole", Gangster and deadbeat dad, Ulysses Pick, embarks on an unusual journey through his home. Starring Jason Patric, Isabella Rossellini & Udo Kier.

In "Detention", As a killer named Cinderhella stalks the student body at the high school in Grizzly Lake, a group of co-eds band together to survive while they're all serving detention. Starring Josh Hutcherson, Shanley Caswell & Spencer Locke.

In "96 Minutes", The story of 4 lives slammed together in a shocking moment. Intercutting between a carjacking and the separate stories of the 4 kids, we watch as they hurtle toward a life-changing end. Starring Brittany Snow, Evan Ross, Christian Serratos & David Oyelowo.

Finally in "Sound of my Voice", A journalist and his girlfriend get pulled in while they investigate a cult whose leader claims to be from the future. Starring Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius & Brit Marling.

Our whole High School saw "The 3 Stooges" yesterday...Almost everyone hated it, but I thought it was good. It wasn;t amazing, but it wasn't horrible either. Over half of the jokes worked and there were 3 or 4 that were really hilarious. Only problem was that too many of the jokes seemed old and unoriginal. So...If I were you, wait for it on DVD. Still a nice movie though

Grade:

B
