Please explain fast starts, slow finishes

Can someone please explain for me why the Bills have, at times start games 100 miles per hour, then completely seize up? They have had games where they start moving the ball up and down the field, both running and passing. Then after a few drives, the whole thing completely shuts down. I understand that games are made up of adjustments, but what prevents us from making the same adjustments? Is this poor coaching, or not having the athletes to make adjustments?

Here are a couple possible reasons:

1) More talented teams (like the Patriots) come into the game taking us lightly. We get up by a few points. By the time the 2nd-3rd quarter hit, they start taking us seriously and we just can't hang anymore.

2) Fitzpatrick is horribly inconsistent. He's good for a couple nice throws every week. He's also sure to throw quite a few bad ones. Games like yesterday, he jam-packed all his good-accurate throws into the first three drives. The rest of the game, he looked like crap.

3) Our coaches only have a few tricks up their sleeves. Other teams adjust to what we are doing, and we can't respond.

Good game planning/scripting and poor overall talent...

Buffalo has too many players currently on it's roster that were not there for training camp. Many are recent street free agents. What that means is that the "new" players are not totally familiar with Buffalo's play book. Gailey can install a game plan and the new players can practice that plan in the week prior to the game and be initially successful early in the game. But when the opposing coach makes adjustments to shut down what Buffalo is doing, Gailey does not have the option to adjust or change to the the opposition's adjustments because of the unfamiliarity of the new players with all of the plays in the book. (Just a theory which may have some merit. )

Injury replacements are usually limited in their skill set (which is why they are backups...) so opponents can figure out what we are trying to do against them and make changes, while our limited skill set players can not adapt as quickly.. we have lead the league, or been close to the top the past 4 years for number of injured players on IR and also for the number of starters lost..... so this has been an ongoing problem for a while...

We come in with good plans but are outmatched in talent over the long haul. It's a lot easier to surprise someone then it is to beat someone that's more talented. Whether over a game or a season.

I agree

, chan watches film , finds things to expliot. Teams adjust. That said . If they played good defense then a 21-0 lead would end up no worse then a 30-20 win If you ever noticed they still move the ball but do not end drives with touch downs. Theh they get behind and fitz is forced toi either take chances or punt. Fix the defense !!!

IMO the defense is what is letting this team down time and again. If we start fast the defense, when we need them cannot step up and shut the other team down.

If we start slow the defense is incapable of stepping up to shut the other team down until the offense can get started. We are then behind and the original game plan is out the window

Improvements need to be made on the defensive side of the ball. The offense is fine, we were up 21-0 on the Pats yesterday. If the defense was at all half decent that should have been enough.
