Since 2000, the Bills have retained 10 players past 5 seasons (21%) from the first 4 drafts picks. Do you really think if Tebow was drafted by Buffalo he would be killing it here? If our draft goes something like this next year... 1-Alshon Jeffery 2-Brandon Jenkins 3-Jonathan Banks Sure, they might be some good players, but they most likely won't be around longer than 5 years with Wilson's pockets. Until the team gets a new owner who isn't 90+ years of age and is really into the team (pegula) we will always be starting udfa's and 6th/7th rounders who have "great potential." When a kid comes out college and gets drafted and has a good 4 or 5 years, many teams come calling with stacks of cash. You can't keep eveybody. You just can't. Just look at the kind of money the Jags threw at Pox and he wasn't even really that good. The same happened to Greer, Winnfield, Clements, Pat Williams, and several others. While in one sense it does matter whom the Bills draft (i.e., some players have better talent and more drive than others), in another sense it doesn't because the Bills lack the culture of achievement necessary for good player development. I do think the Bills coaching staff is better than it has been in previous years, but it may not be enough in itself to change the culture of losing and failed player development. Consider Gronkowski as an example. We might think to ourselves: "How lucky the Patriots are! If only we had drafted him, he would be scoring 15 TD's for us!" That is silly nonsense. If he were drafted by the Bills, we might very well be debating whether he is a bust. Why? Because he would not have been nearly as successful here. In order to do what he is doing in NE, he needs: A superior QB an O-line that can do its job and protect the QB, and doesn't need his help all the time to do so other very good WR's that can take coverage away from him an offensive coach who can create schemes to free him up (I actually think we have this with Gailey) a defense that can keep opposing offenses off the field etc. It kind of makes a person a little depressed. We get a miracle pick off Jason Avants foot to beat Eagles, we get a truly miracle pick six off Dareus' f ing head to beat Pats when Fred miraculously is down at the one instead of leaving Brady 2 minutes to come back and win the game. We miraculously got John Beck instead of Grossman v then-screwed up and decimated Redskins and won that one. Should have been 3-4 going into the first Jets game by rights. We all got fooled again, just like 2008. Actually 2011 will be turning out worse than 2008, which no one thought possible. They will lose out now. Amazing. from 5-2 to 5-11.
