like to see or expect to see?

i dont see how its anyone but Wannstadt

I don't see how it could be Wannstadt, he's had his hand in this miserable defense as well, I'd also like to see them stay with the 3-4, something that Wannstadt has no DC experience with.

The 3-4 is a good defensive front. The Problem is purely Personnel. The Bills have no depth on defense and no playmakers for a 3-4 defense to be successful. Dwan Edwards is 3rd String at best. The Linebackers are learning on the job. The defense needs a complete overhaul of the front 7. Besides Sheppard and Dareus, they have alot of work to do. They need Pass rushers and stay at home guys to help the run. The Draft and Free Agency can fix it, but the Bills always choose to stay idle.

I sure Hope everyone is looking forward to 5-11 for 2012, because that will happen if multiple major upgrades to the defense are not made. There is NO WAY this team will be built completely via the Draft and Mediocre Free Agents. This team needs to be aggresive and signing Big name Free Agents here or young guys who still want to prove themselves. Gonna take a big overhaul, that can be done, but the Bills top brass rather not do so. So there you go...

the key to any 3-4 defense is a big NT like Ted Washington which the Bills dont have. I like Williams and Dareus but they are better suited for DT in a 4-3 so the personel should dictate them switching back to a 4-3 under Wannstadt

Agreed. Dareus has shown that he can play DE or NT in a 3-4 but it looks like DT in a 4-3 is probably going to be his best position. Why not team him with Kyle Williams, move Kelsey back to hand on the ground DE in a 4-3 and go from there? Troup can be a back-up DT. Either Barnett or Sheppard can play MLB (neither is ideal 4-3 MLB) and the other can try to take one of the OLB spots. If that doesn't work, the loser of the competition is the back-up MLB. Merriman, if he is still on the roster, can be a third-down pass rushing specialist, which seems about what his body can take at this stage of his career anyway.

Knowing the Bills it will probably be someone from NCAA which I'm not entirely against or one of our current coaches like DB or ILB

Bills love to promote from within

I would love to see a defensive assistant from either the Steelers or Ravens, but it will more likely be Wanny, although Whaley has his ties in Pittsburgh so who knows. However, I do have an agonizing feeling Edwards will be back.

Who would you guys like to see as the Bills next defensive coordinator? Realistically speaking. Crossing my fingers that we let Edwards go after the season.

Sorry for this reply but ----------------------------------------- DUH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You forgot Kellen Heard. 6'6' 350 and he can play. I didn't know anything about the rookie before the draft but he plays low and he seems quick for being the biggest guy on the field. I think he gives them the option to be the space eating middleman in the 3-4 with Kyle and Dareus on either side.

As much as Kelsay's pass rushing lacks, the guy is experienced in both schemes and would provide depth. I think Merriman hurts the team by taking a roster spot for a player we could develop. Even as a 3rd down specialist his body can't take the game anymore. I wanted him to work as much as every Bills fan but he needs to go. My reasoning is that he'll win the job in camp because he looks great in bursts when he's healthy in August but he'll breakdown in the early season and now your 2nd best guy has taken about 500 less reps than he would have otherwise. It hurt the team this year and likely would again.

I think we are one pass rusher and CB away from having a pretty good defense in either scheme.

I can't profess to know enough of the college game, or of the assistant coordinators around the league, to say who would make a good D-Coordinator other than the good Coordinators of years gone by. I think we're looking at three scenarios.

One - we just make Wanny the D-coordinator. I think he was brought in as the "Assistant to H.C, and Linebackers coach" instead of D-coordinator, because 1. - maybe he needed the Assistant H.C. title, and maybe they felt they owed it to Edwards or maybe just owed him money, or 2. - Being only in the background, Wanny would be able to look at how all the coaches operated, taught, and he could see where the weak elements were, both with coaching and players. They bump him to Def. Coordinator next season and he cleans out who he thought was not performing up to standard. Not only did the one year give him time to see who worked well and who didn't, but it also gave him time to line up assistants he might want to hire. Then, all of a sudden, it isn't just Wanny taking over same old defense, but Wanny installing a solid group. That would be encouraging.

Another scenerio is they hire another proven Def. Coordinator that has had some success in the past. Who that would be, I don't know. But, I would sure love to have Miami's D-Coordinator if they clean house after the season. He knows the AFC East, and he can turn around a unit in no time. Mangini would also be okay, but I don't like the guy's "integrity" Really, andy D-Coordinator who's had success would be nice.

The third scenario is that they hire an "up and comer" from an assistant position on another team, or from the college ranks. The FortyNiners D.C. came from college - and although he came from college, he was pretty highly regarded in the NFL anyway. There has to be other guys like him. The trouble with the Bills - they never seem to be able to recognize that talent and bring it in. Just as they have had problems recongizing player talent, they have a habit of bringing in guys on the wrong side of their careers, coaching wise - or just plain miss. I'd love to see INNOVATION though.

So, I'd be okay with any of those outcomes - and, if it happened with Wanny like I mentioned, that might be nice.

I get a kick out of the idea that coaches, especially those as long-tenured as The Stache, would have trouble coaching and implementing any other schemes but the ones they have used most often. I'm not saying I want The Stache as DC but I don't think he'd have any problems running a 34 primarily. Does anyone think Rex Ryan would have a problem running a 43 front?

Whoever our DC ends up being, I hope they will just look at the personnel on hand and make the determination based on that. However, given that beating out NE* to win the division is goal #1, then I would prefer trying to build a good 34 and that's what I see them continuing to do so I can see the growing pains continuing until more pieces are in place.

Agreed. Ideally that would be the perfect role for him. Unfortunately, he's our best OLB against the run even when less than 100% healthy, so I don't know if the Bills will have the luxury of part-timing him when he comes back, assuming he comes back healthy. A HUGE question needless to say.
