Oh, I see - I was thinking back catalog when I saw that. Yeah, get them up right away, and I'll buy them or subscribe.........I'm a very big talk radio listener and he is missing out on me and probably many others who prefer the podcast format.

I use one of the Sirius TiVo-like devices so I get it. Listening live is absurd.

The station holiday party is at the Friars Club on the 15th. Figure an announcement that day/night.

Yes, I caught that, too. I have been listening to the shows twice each day hoping to catch something I missed before. His rant this morning against the CFO of Sirius was classic but did not feel like the times of old rants. He said flat out he only deals with Mel and Don, which makes me think there is not a deal in place. I would imagine Mel is having to get everyone else (the board) to agree to Stern's demands.

Me thinks that starting in 2011 some time that Stern opens his catalog to Apple. I do not know if it will be the entirity because he has always said that he feels subscribers already pay their share to get new programming. I will be extremely upset if Stern leaves Sirius and it would be the worst business move Sirius could do. I am already upset enough that I cannot find new hardware for Sirius. It is all for XM which adapts. The best Sirius receiver was the Stiletto 100. It had multiple types of batteries, uses, etc.

LOL - absurd sounds about right to me!........I didn't even know they had that. Do they have that for terrestrial, too?

Holy crap - I thought I was obsessive about what I listen to!

Stiletto 100 or Stiletto 2. I record the show every morning and play it back through the day. I can get thru all 6 hours of the show in less than 4 1/2 hours. The only negative is that they are doing in show commercials and not updating the screen scroll.

Done deal. Sirius for 5 more years.

I cannot understand why they stopped making the Stiletto product line. It is quirky as f___ but it's the only product like it.

Illegal recorders on the PC are available to make mp3s you can carry on your iPod.

Howard Stern hasn't been funny in years

Many, many years. He is a prime example of how low our standards for comedy have dropped. Also how low our standards for intelligence have dropped.

I'd say the standards have stayed consistent over the years. There are just more outlets for people to monetize on the different strata.

As reported in WSJ:

Howard Stern, the controversial radio talk show host, said on his Sirius XM Radio Inc. show Thursday that he has signed a five-year deal to remain with the satellite radio broadcaster.

Not surprising, as this was realistically his best venue.

Howard has low and high intelligence listeners. There's no better radio show centered on personality and comedy.

According to Howard he is available as of today on the sirius app for iphone, android and blackberry.

I'm sure he will be there soon but as of now, the app still doesn't have him.

I think when most people think of HS they think strippers, porn stars and dick jokes. This may have been a huge part of his act in the past, but IMO it really isn't a big part these days. Sure he still has them on from time to time, but to me it's the whole Stern universe that he has been able to create that is funny. The different personalities on his crew and the ball busting that goes on is the majority of the entertainment currently. To each his own. Stern is a master interviewer as well.

Mel Karmizan (sp)understands that it's not technology that sells channels, it's content. That's why he has Rosie, Dr. Laura, Howard, Oprah (kind of), Deepak Chopra, Bubba, etc. I am sure he had to bid high to maintain the best content and keep Howard.

The only person who interviews at Howard's level is Terry Gross. He truly is a master interviewer.

And I agree with that assessment. Howard's old act was a bore. It was bit and stunt intensive and half his time was spent yelling about DJs in cities he was entering. The last 10 years' Howard is light years better. Basically, he grew up.

I think that the competitive angle got played up a little too much. No body was going to pay Howard sirius money at this stage. He may have gotten more out of terrestrial radio, but then his act would need to change and I'm not sure he'd be willing to do that (and everyone knew that)

So now everyone is happy, Sirius gets to keep him, doesn't break the bank and Howard gets to spend more time at home.

The only company that made any sense was Apple. No one else has half a billion to throw at him. Pandora certainly couldn't do it and Howard's made it clear he doesn't have any interest in returning to regular radio. Unless some huge established media company was willing to launch an Internet subscription service radio station with Howard as the main attraction, you're right: Sirius was always the frontrunner.

Sirius is shifting from the technology to the content. If people stay with Sirius, it's not going to be because they can get it in their cars, it's going to be because they like the product offered. Nowadays, you can get music anywhere--it's the other content that will set them apart and make them competitive for your entertainment dollars. I am a huge radio listener, especially talk radio, and I am glad there's still a company making serious commitments to the medium.

(I would give up my TV before I'd give up my radio. Not even a competition.)

No one, even Apple would throw half a billion at Stern. The $500 million figure ascribed to his original Sirius contract is exagerated by the value of SIRI stock at the time of the announcement. $100 mil/yr is a lot of scratch for Apple to pay to lead people to iTunes, when they go there alreday. Maybe Google would throw that much stock at him if they already had a content distribution platform. But the bottom line for the alternative outlets is could they count on his 2 million loyal fans paying $5/mo consistently to download his shows?

That's a given. His listeners (people like me and my wife) have more than one subscription too. We have 4. One for each or our cars and one each for our home and office radios.

You're right about the deal amount. The 500M figure also included all of the show-related salaries and costs. On terrestrial, he was personally making 20M/year.

He truly is a master interviewer.

Sometimes he is good with interviews and sometimes he is awful. He is awful when he asks questions, and then before giving the guest a chance to answer, he moves onto the next question. The recent Billy Joel interview was like this, and it was so bad, I turned it off.

For me, Howard is at his best when there are no guests and it is just talk between the staff.
