People are naturally good

Enough.....this country is falling apart- which isnt a surprise, because all countries eventually will implode as a result of the inherent weakness in every governmental and economic system.

Everything has to have a price, everything can be won. Everyone is at each other's throats for position, willing to do whatever it takes.

pop culture....need I say more......just stinks.

Two party system where neither party cares about anything but power.

Is there any decency left? WE say America is the best place in the world, and I wont say there is no truth in that, but does it mean there should be satisfied?

Where is better? If you want true beurocracy try Canada. Pop culture is subjective. Who cares what others like? Not everything has a price. You are way cynical. DId you go on a drinking binge with Rudy or something?

All dominant powers in the history of the world have their rise and then their fall. It is just a matter of time before another power becomes #1. (Of course I hope that doesn't happen in my lifetime!)

Exactly, but I think it might happen within 20 years. Look at our society- the minority has projected our image for the past few years, and it is an image of instability, and a complete lack of morality. How long before the backlash from the majority causes another backlash, and the instability becomes cataclysmic.

I fear very soon the Constitution will have to be suspended, as we have outgrown the rights it provides......Yes, our forfathers probably were much smarter than us, but they could not have forseen what we would become.

Oh, they foresaw it. They just didn't think the Judicial Branch would go along for the ride.

What have we become? A nation of cupcakes if you ask me. The excesses in this country are obscene. We spend bazillions on stuff like Viagra, Cialis etc. while children around the world die for lack of basic inoculations. Shoot, children in our own country lack basic food, housing, clothing and education. And we sniff "hey, we can't take care of the world" and then viciously lash out at each other for not being Christian enough.

Frankly I always like to look for the good in people and do believe that in the end "good" triumphs. But I am not smug or stupid enough to believe that because this is America, we are "good". I don't think that's for any earthy being to say.

Or a flat-out !@#$ like you.  I have looked but come up empty in your case.

Wow, very nice. And you know how well?? I would never ever completely judge anyone without meeting them face to face and actually talking with them and getting to know them. And even after a reply like that I would still reserve complete judgement on you until I had the chance to meet you and talk. As of right now I feel I barely know you.

In her case, you should judge her now. After all she said "Frankly I always like to look for the good in people" BlzNut yet says "Or a flat-out !@#$ like you"

You're to kind Jim. She's shown herslf to be quite the Statesman when it comes to hypocrisy and ignorance.

Thanks for the support, however I'm not being too kind, it's just my nature. I cannot, and will not completely judge someone until I meet them.

Well, there are expectations to every rule I suppose. I’m meeting Tennyboy in a couple of weeks for a Grouper sammich and a couple of beers. :)

I guess in my case it is from all those years cooking professionally for people. At that time my number one goal was only to make people happy regardless of who or what they were. Everyone becomes someone you care for and will litteraly bleed, sweat and cry for. I have cooked for some people in my time that really upset me, but I never did anything to their food other than to make it look and taste better than anything they ever had.

If the world were more like a restaurant on a busy Saturday night............ many times I told a server to fu** off, and get the fu** out of my kitchen at 8:00pm and we were buying each other drinks and laughing about the whole incident at 10:00pm.

I’ll agree with the premise of the thread title, and I do believe that.

But my waitress kept bringing me the wrong orders. First she brought a Caesars salad, when I asked for a Chef salad. Then she brought a me Shrimp Cocktail when I ordered Steak tar tar. Then she brought a Filet, instead of the Lobster tail I ordered.

Then to top it off, she brought me Jell-O, instead of the Chocolate cake I ordered.

I think I’d have a hard time having a couple of Pops with her after that. But that’s just me. :):(

Just funnin Jim, I see your point. I hope you see mine.

And of course she blamed the kitchen the whole time. That's why we keep our knives sharp. Nice clean cut. If anyone wants to know what really goes on in a professional kitchen, read Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain. Be warned though, you may never dine out again. :)

I forgot one other thing. When I ordered a glass of RED wine, she kept trying to force her BLUE Kool-Aid on me.

I agree with you, and frankly, I don't feel safe- I think we are becoming more and more dangerous as a country. I am genuinely scared about the direction we are headed

I'm not quite there yet - I keep thinking that a great leader will arise that we can all rally 'round as a nation but so far it hasn't happened. I guess we get the leadership we deserve.

However that isn't to say that every individual can't do their part to make their little part of the world a little better. In fact that's all one can do. But if everyone did it, collectively things would improve some.

No, people are not naturally good. The "good" comes from ideas and ideals learned through a strong family and community base of teaching what is good, what is not so good.

Once upon a time it worked to the benefit of all. Now, we are inundated with excess, technology and the cry for Civil liberty, which is euphanism for "it's OK to do whatever you want, screw everyone else".

So, now the people are "good" when it serves their purpose to be that way, not because it's the way to be. Soapbox? There's thousands of examples of this going on every day. It's become normal behavior to be selfish and self centered. Most of these examples are small (try merging into DC Beltway Traffic at 4 PM), but collectively, they give a bad sign.

We have had a couple of excellent choices in McCain and Dean, but nobody wants intelligence or wisdom... they want acting, big blustery talk about stupid issues, and extremist pop-gun battles in the media. You get what you vote for! :)

I agree, oddly enough I would have voted for either one although their politics in some areas are at different poles.

That's why I say we get what we deserve. If this is indeed a nation of idiots, as it seems, then it's only right that our representatives be idiots.

The Era of Great Statesmen(1860-1945) is now over... since the end of WWII, we have been left with the scraps of the Modern Age. Aside from the very, VERY rare exceptions, our freedom and vastly improved technology has left us devoid of principle and rationality. Could this have possibly been the case in ancient Rome? Many parallel it, including myself, but the outcome is the only proof.
