[please fix subject]New Stadium planned

Recommended Posts

And that's exactly why Genesee County would never want a stadium out there - everyone trying to avoid the NYS I-90 parking lot would try to shortcut thru those narrow, windy roads that weave right thru their quaint little villages and charming, tiny downtowns.

Hasn't gotten any better since I lived there in the '80s and had season tix at the old Shaefer/Sullivan/Whatever stadium next to the old dog track - even after they built a new stadium, widened all the access roads, and added tons of new parking at 50 bucks/car.

As a wild and crazy kid, we would hang out in Oakfield NY (on Route 63 NW of Batavia) on Friday and Saturday nights waiting for the Batavia Downs race track to let out (around 11 pm) and bombard the cars with rotten tomatoes as they passed through this small town with 1 traffic light in the center of the village.

Build a stadium in down Niagara falls, N.Y. lots of cheap land. Build it overlooking the falls, with all the hype on the canandian side and the potential on the american side, and the millions and millions of tourist that visit there every year. Come on, that could become like a mini cold weather vegas. Every NFL fan from around the country would be drawn to see their team play the Bills, they could make a little vacation out of it. In the summer they could have all types on concerts there and other things. The possiblity would be mind blowing. You have a natural wonder of the world there, you don't have to build it or buy it. It's there and it draws millions of people there a year. Use it.

Great location, but you could never pull that off in Buffalo. For one, the NFTA has held that land for well over 50 years and done absolutely nothing with it, yet they covet it and apparently intend to have it lay fallow for 50 more. Second, there are hoards of 'obstructionists' that would be opposed to using that prime sight for a stadium and parking - for only 9 Sundays each Fall. And third, remember the 'Twin Span' Peace Bridge expansion that was announced in the early-to-mid 1990's? Well here's an article from this morning's Buffalo Snooze...

Peace Bridge construction may start in 2012

Seriously,, the best site would be the vast wasteland that was Bethlehem Steel. It'll never be rehabilitated for any other use, has rail access galore, is right on the lakefront, right along the highway, is more than big enough for any and all ancillary requirements and amenities such as parking, field houses, executive office, critical care facilites, med-evac heliports, shopping malls, etc., etc.

If you made it a totally 'green' self-sustaining facility by using solar, geothermal, and adding to the wind farm that's already there, you might even be able to get some 'Obama-bucks' to fund the thing! B-)

Good idea.

But who knows what they will find in the ground. Might take years to clean up if they start digging.

I always thought a golf course would be better. Grass might turn brown after a few years though..lol

I have been seeing the Goodyear blimp on a clear Monday night with the Staduim view and the Falls in the background...the freakin Falls of Niagara damnit.

Wanna build your Canadian base....showcase the Canadian side of the Falls which has always been better because of a more stable government.

but if you put a stadium there you would have benefits to both sides. We needs some money...

... semantics. You really took the time to say that, huh?

1. No it's not semantics. A "plan" and an "idea" are not the same thing. Something tells me you really don't even know what "semantics" means.

2. Even if the two words did imply the same thing, Your thread title says "planned" - past tense, as if this proposal has already been laid out by people who matter, i.e., not you.

Your thread is misleading and the idea is ridiculous. FAIL

Agree, as much as I'd like to see a downtown stadium to help revive the city, Niagara Falls location makes sense for a more international appeal and stimulating the economy.

Nah, just throw a couple feet of gravel over the hole, like they did at Hickory Woods. ;)

I think there's even enough room for a golf course too. Now there's a multipurpose attraction that'll draw folks to the water. Stadium, shops ('Patriot* City' outside Gillette* Stadium even has a Bass Pro), golf course - I'm sure you could fit one on the site - they got one on the infield at Indianapolis Raceway.

Annex the site and make it part of the City of Buffalo (the tax revenue to Lackawanna is negligible anyway), and build the damn thing!

Before you scoff at this... It just might make sense and here's a few reasons why:

So you wanted to make it sound official in the title to suck in members of this group. Good strategy, but a bad post. What you are suggesting is not only "pie in the sky," but also ridiculous. If there is any chance that the team will stay in the general area, it must have a much larger population base, along with a lot more major corporations present. Therefore, the team must move north (closer to Toronto) or leave the area entirely. It can't go east because the nearest such place is New York City, which already has two teams (even though they are located in New Jersey). It can't go southwest because Cleveland and Pittsburgh already have that territory. West = Bears, Colts, Packers and Vikings, Southeast = Eagles, Ravens and Redskins. You are just playing with wishful thinking.

To bad they just couldn't move The Ralph there on that site.

Or if you want to be really creative we could bring Nascar in and build a race track to town, even though I'm am not a big fan of racing you can do an upgrade to Watkins Glen on that site.

Now you're talkin' - add a road course and get F1 kingpin Bernie Ecclestone to stage the 'BuffTown Grand Prix' (Monaco, shmonico!). Tony George can be bought, too, but Indy cars already run at The Glen and in Toronto so it'd take Paladino-type money to get them to move here B-)

See? You'd have been all set with a stadium there, because around 11 pm is about when folks would finally break thru the traffic jam after a 1 pm game, and would just be hitting the village center!

Sadly the IRL race at The Glen and all International Speedway owned tracks have been dropped for next year over another pissing match with IRL. We think the Bills management is dysfunctional, the IRL makes the Bills look like they really have a plan!

...The Falls has changed so much since I was last there 15 years ago. Is there land next to the Seneca Niagara Casino that the Senecas could grab up? That would be a great place for a dome! It would give a obvious big sponsor, a reason to use it for more than the 11 Bills games (8 regular, 2 playoffs and Superbowl played there). Concerts, NCAA BB...the list goes on. Heck maybe they could build it in a way that baseball could be played there since Tampa (should have been Buffalo) can't seem to get anybody to care unless they give tickets away in a pennant race! Now that's sad...

2. ...the Jets are now in Cortland for training camp, we may be losing ground in CNY.

Nothing beats actually going to a NFL game.

I don't know of anyone here in Syracuse that actually drives to northern NJ to see a Jets or Giants game.

I know of plenty fellow Bills fans here in Syracuse that drive to all the Bills home games in Orchard Park.

The Bills are NOT losing ground in CNY. And even if they did, it would be to SU Orangemen football.

WHAT???? THERE'S A NEW STADIUM PLANNED IN BATAVIA????

Horrible idea. Thankfully it's a bunch of BS disguised as a plan in the subject line.

My favorite memory of Batavia is of the time a couple of friends and I were driving to Albany and then to Williams College to see another friend. I was the designated drunk, in the back seat with a bunch of OV Splits (I'm pretty sure there was other booze and some illegal substances in the care as well). I've never been much of a beer drinker, but splits are a bit addictive and quite dangerous.

Well, anyway, I started hitting the splits (and the whatever) quite hard, apparently. At one point in time, I decided to check exactly how far along we were on our trip. "Batavia 1 Mile" read the sign as we passed. "Batavia?" I cried. I'm this fu#$ed up and it's only Batavia?" Needless to say it was an interesting trip.

OMG... OV Spilts!!! There was a bar in Elmira that had them around 1980 for I think (dead brain cells) 3/$1.00. We'd keep leaving them on our table and as Floyd would say from the old "Andy Griffith" show..."It's a beautiful thing Andy". Problem was it was the night we played in 8 ball league, go figure we always did better on the road!!

Here in the BuffTown, Mulligan's Brick Bar on Allen Street used to serve cases of 24 OV Splits over the bar - you'd pay for the case (back when I was in H.S. and college, it had to be about 6 bucks), the bartender would pop it open, sprinkle ice over the inside, open all 24 bottles, and hand you your case of splits to carry back to the pool table, or wherever.

I think The Dean may have started this site - if we all do our part, we can bring them back...
