Bears need a backup to Cutler

Recommended Posts

The Broncos murdered the Bears on that Cutler trade. 2 firsts and Orton is a QB that actually wins games.

Might be too early to tell. What has it been, one year? The Broncos won one more game than the Bears last season and spent a first-round pick on a quarterback. At what point do the Bears win the trade? A playoff appearance? A Super Bowl win? Five Super Bowl wins? They upgraded at quarterback, and they feel they got a franchise player. That's the name of the game.

I'd say the Bears need to become an annual playoff type time to justify the package they gave up. And at this point of their careers, Orton is more of a winner than Cutler.

The Bears aren't looking at spending anything to get themsleves a backup QB RIGHT NOW, not in a few weeks, but NOW.

Haine was the guy they wanted as the backup behind Cutler, and Lefevour is going to be their 3rd QB. The reports are they have been contacting guys like Todd Collins, and other retired/semi retired/UFL players, but told them all that they can compete for the backup job. They are reportedlynot offering any money upfront, and theres no guarantees that they will make the team which means they can be cut and go through the pre season and training camp and not end up with a job, or money

There is no way they trade for any of the Bills QB's, and not a chance that they give up anything to get a QB from them.

I don't know. Edwards was drafting to backup Losman as a 3rd round pick. He probably would have been a great backup fill-in guy if Losman didn't tank it so bad.

A 3rd round QB isn't a guarantee star. I still blame Losman a million times more for the team's QB problems over Edwards. I really believe that Levy thought of Edwards as the new Reich who they could develop a bit.

Let's think about this a second .... our QBs pretty much stink ... at very best we have two that stink, and two that are question marks.

Now why on Gods green earth would another team ... no matter how desperate ... trade us for one of our cast offs????

He knows Martz's system. This is a no brainer.

Go get a 6th rounder. Just think how excited people get about Levi Brown. Another 6th rounder is well worth it.

I agree that Cutler may end up being a giant turd a la Jeff George, but it's hard to blame the Broncos 2008 8-8 season on him. The team was 2nd in the NFL (1st in the AFC) in total offense (yards per game) and 3rd in total passing. He had 25 TDs and 18 INTs, which is not the greatest ratio, but with those yards, and any kind of defense they should have been a playoff team. Unfortunately, they were a terrible defensive team. They were 29th in Defense (Total Yards) and 30th (Scoring.)

In 2008, they were 8-5 and finished 8-8, and they did lose at home to the lowly Bills in week 16, which gave San Diego the opportunity to win the division in week 17. If Cutler is going to get the credit for getting them to 8-5, he has to be able to lock down one more win to secure the playoffs. Philip Rivers rebounded after SD's slow start, and had a great year to get his team to the postseason (312-478, 65.3%, 4009 yds, 34 TD, 11 INT). They also finished 8-8.

As mentioned above, at Vanderbilt Cutler had the ready-made excuse playing on a bottom tier team in a conference loaded with talent. At Denver, it was always the defense's fault. In Chicago, Urlacher got hurt in the season opener. At some point, in a sport driven by quarterback play, the responsibility has to fall on the QB.

As for the Bears backup, they can take any of our 4. I'd even let them pick.

McShay predicts Bears will draft QB Brohm at No. 14

By: By Larry Mayer | Last Updated: 2/6/2008 3:20 PM

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – In his latest mock draft released Tuesday, ESPN.com’s Todd McShay predicts that the Bears will select Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm with the 14th overall pick in the NFL Draft.

“The Bears will have a tough decision to make if Brohm still is available at No. 14,” McShay writes. “There has been a lot of talk about the Bears going in a different direction with this pick, including offensive and defensive tackle. And while that makes a lot of sense, I still wouldn't rule out Brohm just yet.

"His stock is likely to soar between now and April's draft because he should impress scouts with his overall passing efficiency and football intelligence during the combine and individual workouts.”

In his previous mock draft, McShay had predicted that the Bears would choose Andre Woodson at No. 14. But McShay has since dropped the Kentucky quarterback out of the first round.

Among the players still on the board at No. 14 in McShay’s mock draft are USC tackle Sam Baker, Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh tackle Jeffrey Otah and Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart.
