Leodis is going to be a gamebreaker, which the defense desperately needs. He is all but gauranteed to be our number 1 corner next year. Whitner is a good player, but he has shown that he is not in the elite level yet, or close to it really. One thing: Ed Reed and Polamaulu play FS and are much better in coverage. You rarely ever see Reed close to the line. Completely different player. Whitner reminds me of Adrian Wilson from the Cards. Took him a few years to put it all together. If you look at other defenses who play a similar style to ours, overall secondary play will suffer when you don't rush the QB. It's easy to find the soft spots in the zone when you have time. That's not an excuse, it's just a given. Elite players will make some plays regardless. Whitner is not elite, but he is not average or below average as some suggest.

Where is the TALENT on this team?
BrooklynBills replied to LabattBlue's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We have some talent. We don't have an explosive type gamebreakers. The guys with gamebreaking talent on this team are Whitner, McKelvin, Youboty, Hardy, Lynch, Peters, and Evans. Whitner: used improperly, should be down in the box on nearly every play. McKelvin: rookie, has great speed, ball skills and SWAGGER, which is sorely lacking on this team. Needs to develop the mental side of his game more. Youboty: similar to McKelvin, showed glimpses of his ability early this year but has been hurt since Week 3. Hardy: rookie WR - needs to adjust to the NFL Lynch: Marion Barber type, needs to realize that he is not a HR hitter. Evans: great speed, great hands, needs to be a better route runner. Needs to be targeted more. No other serious receiving threats on this team right now Peters: size, speed, lacks mental toughness and has poor work habits. Thats six guys who have the ABILITY to be one of the best at their position if they realized their potential. Not much else though. -
I'm not vilifying management, I think they have taken some steps to improve the team. I don't think that we should just blindly hope that Jauron succeeds here, especially when he has never succeeded anywhere else he has been. Head coaching changes don't have to bring about wholesale roster changes or a start from scratch mentality. Jauron: 55- 71, 0-1 playoffs, produced zero HCs Billick: 85 - 67, 5-3 playoffs, 1 Super Bowl, produced 5 HCs Cowher: 149-90-1, 12-9, 1 Super Bowl, produced 7 HCs Schottenheimer: 200-126-1, 5-13 playoffs, produced 8 HCs Reid: 88-56-1, 8-6 playoffs, produced 2 HCs Lewis: 43-46-1, 0-1 playoffs Del Rio: 49-40, 1-2 playoffs, produced 1 HC Edwards: 53-70, 2-4 Smith: 37-28, 2-2 playoffs Who's the failure? All I'm saying is those guys are getting fired and have accomplished more in their careers than Jauron has. Do we really have to wait for Jauron to have a 2-14 season to get rid of him. He isn't capable of handling the job. He has had one winning season in his career and it was with another team, and that team was 3-4 against teams with a winning record, with 2 of those wins against the 9-7 Buccaneers. He is 2 - 19 against teams with a winning record as Bills coach, and it will probably be 2-23 by season's end. Keeping a man who clearly has a track record of losing just for the sake of stability is asinine...a defeatist attitude.

Colts: Dungy - Jim Caldwell Seahawks: Holmgren - Jim Mora, Jr. Bills: Jauron - Rex Ryan Browns: Crennel - Bill Cowher Bengals: Lewis - Jim Schwartz Jaguars: Del Rio - Brian Billick Chargers: Turner - Ron Rivera Raiders: Kiffin - James Lofton Cowboys: Phillips - Jason Garrett Eagles: Reid - Steve Spagnolo Lions: Marinelli - Marty Schottenheimer 49ers: Nolan - Andy Reid Rams: Linehan - Steve Mariucci Just my speculation, and is purely based on what I think would be good fits for those teams(except for the Bills - I chose Ryan because he would be a good fit with the area and because I'm tired of having a team that gets pushed around all the time), but I would like to hear what other people think will happen around the league. Thats 13 coaching changes and there could be more if the Bears tank down the stretch and fire Lovie Smith(about a 50% chance) or the Chiefs finally fire Herm Edwards(highly unlikely). I don't know alot about the current state of college to NFL coaching candidates but I'm sure someone will make the jump this year again.

One thing that I think is being overlooked is the fact that we don't really know what this guy is truly about. Is he a lackey for Ralph to tell what to do or does have some sway with the front office decisions? We don't really know. I like a couple of the things he has done so far: the Stroud trade, I think, was a very sound move. And the attempt at getting Tony Gonzalez, i thought, was a good effort. These are two positive signs that Brandon does have some proactive bones in his body. Brandon can really make a statement if he makes a stand on the coaching situation, convincing Ralph to let him go and move in a new direction. I don't really think it would take much. Say what you want about Ralph, but he does not like losing and he LOVES to fire coaches, some for less than what Jauron has done. And for you conspiracy guys out there, a new coach means new hope, maybe a less precipitous drop in season ticket sales, etc. Also, the Bills coaching job is probably pretty attractive to some of the more ego-maniacal guys in and out of the league right now, you get alot of say in player personnel and pretty much are allowed to be the dominant figurehead of the team. I just don't see how Brandon and Ralph, who are pretty smart businessmen, can think bringing Jauron back when there are potentially going to be 10-14 coaching changes made in the offseason, with proven commodities like Andy Reid, Marty Schottenheimer, Brian Billick, and Bill Cowher available, and even alot of 2nd-tier coaches like Marvin Lewis, Jack Del Rio, Lovie Smith, Herman Edwards, Jim Haslett, or even Charlie Weis becoming available.

Um, Ralph tried to bring back Mularkey
BrooklynBills replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Those guys are all having success right now, well except maybe Greggo. Its funny but, Mularkey is running a good offense with rookie Qb and a first time starting RB in Atlanta, Gilbride just won a super bowl and runs a amazing running game with the Giants, and wade is doing a good job in Dallas after taking over the defensive playcalling duties. And no one can deny Greggo's Redskins D the last couple of years was very good. Just saying..... -
need some praise on here...

I have been one the most ardent supporters of GETTING RID of Greer at the end of the season, but his play this season has been incredibly solid. I'm starting to think maybe we McGee may be the odd man out of our CB rotation next season. -
Without Edwards we have no offense whatsoever. This is a dumb thread. He made a couple of bad plays but it hard to fault him when he is the only one on offense that has any responsibility. Our running game is absolutely horrid, not one good thing to say about it. Maybe you forgot what our passing game looked like before Edwards took over the job.

Well, the Bills have a good relationship with the Colts; wouldn't be surprised if a behind-the-scenes agreement between GMs was made regarding this trade. Possibly contingent upon whether or not the Gonzalez trade went down or not. I still think the Bills thought that they were going to get him, right up until the trade deadline. It actually makes a lot of sense. We need a TE, but we aren't in the position to just be giving out two draft picks like that. McCargo, 3rd, 5th for Gonzalez, 4th is probably what the Bills wanted to have happen. The Colts failed him because we had an agreement with them. This is pure speculation but it wouldn't be surprising in the least.

Players still on the team acquired under Tom Donahoe: Ryan Denney Lee Evans Jabari Greer Chris Kelsay Rian Lindell JP Losman Terrence McGee Brian Moorman Roscoe Parrish Jason Peters Duke Preston Josh Reed Aaron Schobel George Wilson(I may be wrong on this one). That's 9 starters, not too bad. Our top 3 WRs, top 2 DEs, top 2 CBs were drafted by Donahoe. The FAs that he signed for the most part played well for us. IMO, he made 3 major mistakes that ultimately led to him being fired. 1. letting go Pat Williams, 2. missing on too many 1st round picks, 3. Not finding a QB. Going 3-13 and not getting a franchise player hurts his case. So does trading a 1st round pick for a player who only played 3 years here. I've always felt that Donahoe half-assed the rebuilding project that was so necessary after John Butler left. Who's fault is that? It might not all be his but, it is his responsibility. After that season, we were in no position to be trading away 1st rounders. We should have been stockpiling picks, so that if you miss on a few, you still have some young players to fall back on. We did not commit to rebuilding and ultimately that came back to kill us. There was no real foundation of talent, and the gap between our top players and reserves was large in both talent level and age. And he missed on the OL, drafted two running backs with first day picks in 3 seasons, and two WRs in the second round when it was obvious that we needed talented OL. I think Pat Williams speaks for itself.

Nolan May Be Fired As 49ers HC.
BrooklynBills replied to Steely Dan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think in the St. Louis and San Francisco cases, they had potential candidates already on their staff, Jim Haslett and Mike Singleltary, respectively, and it's almost like an extended interview for them. Raiders' situation is pretty unique IMO. -
Some thoughts and opinions...
BrooklynBills replied to Wilson from Gamehendge's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bills got JP Losman. Bills lost 1st, 2nd, and 5th It still sucks but is no where near being two 1sts. If the Bills traded the 13th overall pick in that years draft and their next year's 1st rounder to move up into the top 5 to take XXXXX player, then we would have spent 2 1st rounders. -
Our running game is well.......awful
BrooklynBills replied to marauderswr80's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We actually run better statistically to the right side behind Walker and Butler. Our running game will improve when Fowler is not the starting center. He lets too much penetration through. -

How long till Yobouty is starting?

Dre Bly >>>>> Jabari Greer. Jeez, I like the guy, but he gets way overvalued on this board. He MIGHT get a contract like Jason David got from the Saints, but any team that gave him a big deal Greer has 2 career INTs. David has 11. And Bly has 38. Greer is a ho-hum player and will not be a major priority for anyone in the offseason. -

BrooklynBills replied to webtoe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think Greer is playing well, thats not the point. McKelvin is a game-breaking CB. When he is ready to start, which might not be this season, are starting CBs would be McGee, Youboty, and McKelvin. Its just a numbers game. Greer is the poorest tackler of the group and he is not playing so well that he could not be jumped on the depth chart by players that are more talented than he is. Having Greer on the team right now is great because it is giving both Youboty and McKelvin, who are our 2 most talented CBs, a barometer of play to surpass if they want to get on the field. That is his purpose: to push McKelvin and Youboty to realize their talent and play better. -

He made some great tackles today, especially that one on third down in fourth quarter...on Reggie Williams, I think. To answer your question, though, I would think as soon as McKelvin starts to show that he can be the nickelback, Greer would be bumped down to the 4th CB. He is playing so well, I don't think the Bills would want to take him off the field. Plus he may be the best tackling CB that we have. Its amazing what some confidence can do for you as a player. -
Backup QB article from SI.com

why is trent green still playing? -
That list represents the likelihood of the player making the team. McKelvin, McGee, and Corner are locks. Youboty, Greer, and James are not. The Bills are begging for Youboty to outplay Greer this camp. They like corners who are physical and can tackle well, something Greer is not. Yes, with the talent we had LAST YEAR in the secondary, Greer would be a lock to make the team. But, he can't tackle and isn't that good of a cover corner to make up for that weakness in his game, and with the added talent to the secondary and Youboty seemingly figuring it out, he is definitely not a lock to make the team. Plus he does not play well on special teams either.
-
That does not say much really. Listen, I think we can all agree that McGee, McKelvin, and Corner are not going to be cut. They brought James in to play the nickel spot, a position that Greer and Youboty cannot play. If Corner plays well enough to beat out James, then I think James will be cut. If McKelvin shows that he can handle a starting job, then Greer will be cut. If Youboty keeps playing the way he played last night, then Greer will be cut. All that being said, I could see it playing out with either James, Greer, or Youboty being waived, we just have a lot of players there. And now that I think about it more, if Youboty plays well enough to not be moved, then James will probably be the player that goes. They could just move McGee inside on nickel situations.
-
We are not in a position to trade corners who are playing well. That is not a sensible reaction to a THIRD YEAR player with alot of talent who seems to be playing well. Our corners for this season, in order of how shocked I will be if they don't make the team: McGee McKelvin Corner James Youboty Greer Youboty and Greer are fighting for the same spot. I think Youboty will win it.

On second thought I am liking Peters strategy now
BrooklynBills replied to Pyrite Gal's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why should players be vilified for not honoring their contracts, when they can be cut at any time and not receive any of the money. No guaranteed contracts = players on smaller deals are working on a year-to-year basis. This is a setup for next offseason negotiations, IMO.
