If the decision had to have been made to switch QB's, it should have been done by week 8 at the very latest, not going into the playoffs. With the O-line being used to Flutie's snap count, there were many false start penalties, which backed up the offense into the endzone and the Titans got a sack on Johnson. Johnson was good at playing great for 1 game, then sucking for a bunch more. Johnson sucked for 58 minutes of the game vs the Titans. His fumble deep on our side of the field, was turned into a TD by the Titans offense on the next drive. So, between his fumble & sack in the endzone, he was responsible for 9 points against the Bills. Even Wade Phillips said on the Top 10 QB controversies "In Hindsight, Doug would have won us the game." Not only are fans saying it was the wrong decision, but NFL reporters and the horses mouth himself Wade Phillips have said it was the wrong decision. Ralph & Wade got greedy at the wrong time, they wanted more points out of the offense, but were too stupid to realize it was the absolute worst time to make the decision.

Mike, like you said, this guy hates Flutie so no matter anyone says, no matter what the stats say, this guy is a Flutie basher. I think between you & I, we've shown that Flutie was a better QB in Buffalo. You've also pointed out that both Flutie & superbowl winning QB Drew Brees had losing records in their 1st 3 years in SD, because SD was rebuilding, but this guy doesn't want to hear that. He just keeps throwing out the "he just wins" crap.

I liked Mularkey's creativity on offense. My favorite trick play from his time was when Bledsoe went in on a QB sneak and threw it back to Mcgahee, who then ran it in 33 yards for a TD. If Donahoe wasn't an idiot and would have given Bledsoe one more year as starter, who knows how the 2005 would have turned out. I think it would have been better than the 5-11 record between Holcomb & Losman. I'm not syaing Mularkey was a good HC, but he would have been a good OC for us.

Excuses, excuses, excuses... Bottom line, Flutie was better than Johnson. Flutie got screwed over in Buffalo. Flutie had the better Win/Loss record compared to Johnson in Buffalo. Flutie was a better leader on the offense compared to Johnson's laxidasical attitude. Flutie made the most out of a lot of broken plays. Flutie knew how to read defenses and make the changes on the line. Flutie was in the NFL a hell of a lot longer than Rob Johnson. Even Rich Eisen from NFL network laughed in disbelief that Rob Johnson was in a quarterback controversey. I'm not saying Flutie was awesome or even great, but he was better than Johnson, Todd Collins and Alex Van Pelt. Flutie worked with the bad O-line we had at that time. Too bad Flutie wasn't 6 or 7 inches taller. Another point, who helped sell the luxury seats? Was it Johnson? No... It was Flutie. So keep making up the excuses, I know you're a Flutie hater.

Between 1998-2000 both Flutie and Johnson played on a better Bills team. Flutie had the better win/loss record while both him and Johnson were on the same team. In 2001, Flutie went to the worst team in the league, the San Diego Chargers, who the year before went 1-15. Flutie finished the 2001 season with San Diego 5-11, while Johnson finished 1-7 with the Bills (and got knocked out again). The Chargers were rebuilding, while the Bills were under a new coach and new GM. Hands down, Flutie was the better QB. Like others have said, Flutie was not great, but was a good serviceable QB at the time he was with the Bills.

Here's Fluties's stats from the 1999 season: http://www.nfl.com/players/dougflutie/game...amp;season=1999 In 15 games Fluties had: 3171 passing yards, 19 TD's 16 INT's, 476 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD. That's better than any QB we've had in a while on this team. Here's Johnson's for that year: http://www.nfl.com/players/robjohnson/game...amp;season=1999 Johnson sucked for 58 minutes of the Titans game. One of his fumbles was then turned into a TD by the Titans offense. The O-line was not used to Johnson's snap count, so they got a ton of false start penalties in the first half, which backed up Johnson to the endzone and ultimately caused a safety. I think some people think that the fans that defend Flutie call it "Flutie magic" or Flutie was a great QB. There were 2 main problems us Flutie fans had with the decision: 1. Flutie's had a 2:1 winloss record, while Johnson's win/loss record was 1:2. Flutie left Buffalo with a 21-9 record, while Johnson left Buffalo with a 8-18 record. Call it the defense for Flutie's success, but Trent Dilfer had the same success in 2000 when the Ravens won the superbowl. 2. The timing of the decision. If the decision had to be made to switch QB's, it should have been made much earlier in the season not at the end of the season. Switching QB's that late in the season threw off the snap counts on the O-line and a lot of the chemistry on the offense. It was the wrong decision at the absolute wrong time.

Promo, I think Mike was exaggerating, but from what I remember, Kelly was sacked a lot. IMO, Kelly was NFL ready in high school, but still needed some developing, which is why Ted Marchibroda deserves some credit here. And, I don't get how people think the USFL developed Kelly into a great QB. Some of those teams in the USFL couldn't beat college teams. There's a reason why the USFL is no longer in existence. Bottom line, the Bills only drafted 2 quarterbacks in franchise history that have made it to the playoffs (with the Bills). That's pathetic!!!

On the NFL network's special, the Top 10 QB controversies, even Wade Phillips said "In hindsight, Doug would have won us the game." People forget that Rob Johnson played lousy for 58 minutes of the game vs the Titans and only played good on the final drive. I look at Flutie as a better, smaller version of Trent Dilfer. And I also see similarities between the 2000 Ravens that won the superbowl and the 1999 Bills. Both the Bills & Ravens had great defenses which carried the team, but both had serviceable QB's that did enough to get the job done. Whether you win the game by 1 point or 50 points, the result is still the same.

Another Bills quarterback article
Jerry Jabber replied to mike oxhurtz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It definitely has a alot of good points. Like you said, a lot of it has been mentioned already, but then again, hasn't everything else on the team been already mentioned as well. If Gailey can get production out of Tomczak, a guy that was completely clueless and an interception machine in Chicago, then Gailey can definitely get production out of one of the three QB's on the roster. I do agree with the author that the QB battle will be between Brohm & Edwards. -
I remember that Jim spent 3 years in the USFL before coming to Buffalo, but that's not my point. The Bills drafted Jim in 83' and he was the last QB that we drafted that has successfully developed into a franchise or even good QB. The Bills haven't had any success in developing QB's (at least since Kelly arrived). Look at Todd Collins, the first season he takes over for Kelly, he's taken in and out of the line up with Van Pelt, then shown the door the next year, sorry but one year as starter is nowhere near enough time to develop a QB. I'm not saying Collins is great, but he's still in the league and led the Redskins to a playoff berth a couple of years ago. Losman had a different coordinator about every season he was here and did the flip-flop game as well with Kelly Holcomb. I'm not saying saying Losman is great, but he did go to the UFL and win the championship there and is now back in the league...maybe it's just taking him longer to develop, like it did Drew Brees. Brees had 31 games in SD where he threw for under 200 yards, including 6 games where he threw for under 100 yards. Once SD drafted Rivers, Brees stepped up his game and became a better QB.

LMAO!!! That never gets old! I agree with your assessment of the Jets. With Sanchez, I'm not sold on the guy yet, I'm interested in seeing how he does this year.
-
Buffalo hasn't developed a QB since 1986 (Jim Kelly). Todd Collins was quickly shown the door, Losman & Edwards have both been badly mismanaged, so let's see what Gailey can do with Edwards. If Edwards gets the nod as starter and can't get it done this year, then he'll be out of here at the end of the season.

Fans that don't like the yankees always say that "they buy the championships", but those same fans would have loved to have had Steinbrenner as their team's owner. RIP George.

I love his quote (something along these lines) "No one's had to endure, what I had had to endure". Vick, you didn't have to endure anything, you did it to yourself. Once you made it to the NFL, you should have distanced yourself from your troublemaking friends/associates.
