To be fair, the Bills were losing so much back then that they ruined my love for the game too.
He left while under McDermott (2019) and went to the Raiders. Not a lot of winning there either. Seems like he would hard pass on the Bills.

Isn't he the guy that said he got his love for the game back after leaving the Bills?

How is this in any way shape or form comparable to Duke? Outside of them being WR there’s nothing that’s the same
If Coleman can't get separation and can't win with his body then he won't make catches even though he has decent hands. That's what I'm thinking. Not being in quite the right spot because he just can't get there.

Yes, he did indeed say that but the draft is not over yet so perhaps he drafts a seemingly one-trick pony who can sprint. I dont see such a burner in the available FA pile.
We still need a speed guy. Lets not talk ourselves out of that need. The deep part of the field is still not covered by anyone in the WR room yet.
Yes, I put that in my other response. I think this all but guarantees that, fingers crossed.

Beane has been very forthright about the Bills draft this year. He said there were only 25 or so players with first rd grades and when one wasn’t there at 28 he traded down. He said he was going to add DT help and did.
Safety was also an obvious need with only 3 on the roster and both projected starters were backups last season. Beane filled this obvious need with a very talented player who he probably had inside scoop on because of his Utes teammate Kincaid.
However Beane also said, if my memory serves, that the Bills passing game needed more explosive plays and someone who could stretch the field. Instead he drafts a player who ran 4.61 at the combine. This is where the disappointment comes in. Beane set the expectations and then to all appearances didn’t deliver.
I’m not a fan of the Coleman pick. However, I do trust Beane and there is reason to hope. First, Beane said we need to be better at contested catches and Coleman does that well. We also need bigger targets who make plays in the red zone and Coleman does that as well. @Big Turk also pointed out Coleman 20 mph in game speed. This is Nacua type in game speed and we know how that turned out.
Beane said he wanted someone who was good at what they did, not necessarily a speed guy, at least in his last press conference before the draft. Hopefully Keon can win some contested balls. If he can't it will be a failed pick. Hopefully it's not Duke 2.0.

But our qb doesn’t play that game. Won’t play that game. Even if you get Josh Allen on his best behavior … all

so I just don’t think Allen will
suddenly change
I'm hoping Keon can give Josh a decent outlet. I thought last year Josh needed someone on the outside to throw the ball up to. Josh doesnt seem to take the dump offs because he doesnt mind running for it. So I think this helps Josh too, with Keons speed being an indirect factor since he'll never be screaming down the field. To me that also means we probably will be drafting a speed/kickoff return guy later today.

Are people hating on Cooper DeJean because they don’t want a defensive player? Even if he is clearly the best available in a pretty thin safety class?

Yes and you're going to like it. SO much better than picking 10-15 and being done at this point.

They'd be better off keeping it. It's probably going to be a top 40 pick next year, and while valuable in it's own right, you could also package it next year and have two 1st round picks or one pick near the top 10. Sure, you have to wait a year, but that's worth way more than 3rd round trade value this year, IMO.
I see your point, but I could see Beane being aggressive in that particular scenario (no wr in the first) where he has certain guys he would like to get in the second round, similar to his normal trade up "had to get him" scenario. With dumping Diggs, I do think we need a guy at wr to help us win this year and I think that 2 might be used to get someone, either in the first or second round this year. If he does get a wr who can help this year in the first round, the pick next year doesn't provide the same value for us. Just my 2 cents.

Look at the pick value chart and tell me how the Bills are getting from 60 to say 45 using 4th, 5th and/or 6th round picks.
It is not happening.
I think if they don't get a receiver they like at 28, the Diggs 2025 pick gives them some capital to work with.

I’ve had this weird feeling that they were going into the top 10 for a while. I thought that when Diggs was here. If I thought it then, I can’t change now that the need is greater. I can’t shake Beane press conference when he talked about how “he would love a Ja’marr Chase but hopes to never finish bad enough to draft one.” To me, I think that he looks at it as, “swing big on a star WR” and avoid paying that giant bill for 5 years. You can allocate that savings, moving forward to pass rush or whatever. The rising cost of elite receivers makes this the right time to swing big.
I guess I kind of think the opposite of this. The time for me to burn draft picks would have been while Josh was in his lower cap years. We kind of need the picks to hit now to manage the finances unfortunately. In the low cap hit years we are able to grab a Von Miller type player or two, now there is less overhead and more reliance on smaller vet contracts coming in. I am thinking he is going to try and leverage Josh's talent as much as possible and I thought it was an interesting point when he said he needs a selfless guy in this offense. Not sure if the top guys are that, but that's just because of my ignorance. I'm guessing they have identified a few guys who fit the mold they're looking for and I wouldn't be surprised if they're 2nd and lower round guys.
The big swing, if taken, will be a deviation from Beane's normal mantra. Will be interesting to see if he is feeling a little pressure to dump some future resources into this year. I thought it was awesome when he positioned us to not give up any future picks when moving up for josh/Edmunds and I think it just underscores his natural aversion to giving the next years picks up. Always room for a tendency breaker though. Can't wait to see on Thursday.

I haven’t read every post yet, but I’d like to see this broken down by:
1) who made the pick
2) round they mad it in
3 position they picked
I think if we are going to pay attention to trends we should see the variance between decision makers first.
Polian vs Whaley for example: you wouldn’t just lump them together and draw a meaningful conclusion.
You'd also have to consider the coaching staff dynamic as well. Here in Pittsburgh drafting changed when Cowher left and Tomlin came in.

I liken drafting to picking stocks. There are a lot of professionals out there doing it, but some are better than others. It just depends on what is valued by the evaluator and if those traits are the determining factors in success.

So my thoughts on Diggs writ large-
I'm very willing to be accused of kicking the guy on his way out because I believed this was inevitable and frankly should have happened last year after it was obvious he wanted out. personally, it's not fun rooting for your second best player when he doesn't want to be on the team anymore. I don't think that's so outrageous altho the amount of apparent new Texans/CJ Stroud fans here would suggest otherwise😂😂
Of course I don't love the state of the WR room rn but I didn't love it last year, so to be too upset over losing a guy who couldn't make a play on the same ball vs the same DB Allen threw for a pick in London that Nico Collins mossed the guy...whether is was desire or ability doesn't really matter anymore imo. He wasn't making the plays we needed and his yearly postseason disappearing act capped by that drop will be my lasting memory of his time here. If I could I'd change my vote to good luck in Dallas 2 seasons from now
I think Diggs' real goal is KC, hence the conversion to a one year contract. I think beyond that the Texans just worked for him this year.

For me it will be interesting to see what Beane does this year with regards to moving up. We have moved into the Josh Allen cap years so I assume he will be less aggressive in the first day and probably the second. Not having the third this year does restrict him somewhat and while possible he could spend some 2025 capital this year instead but I wouldn't bet on it.
-
I'm hoping he will get 3-4 dump offs a game. He can be Josh's go to target instead of running. I'd rather have Knox pass blocking instead of a rb but we'll see what Brady cooks up this year.

Maybe for Pick 47
Yeah, 28 for 47 and 70 if the NYG like a qb or maybe an OT on the board at that time seems more likely.

They weren't counting on needing it. That miss on Basham really screwed up the depth. They'd likely have a mid round developmental guy or two on the roster from the last few drafts if not for that.
Considering the value of a pass rusher I don't see that as an excuse. In fact, I'm assuming they weren't thinking long term with Boogie well before they traded him. I think you're right, Boogie precluded them from having room for a mid round guy. I'm talking someone like Jarvis was, a long shot, maybe even an international guy or a udfa. Just to try and make use of the environment to hit it big. As opposed to a jag wr or lb.

Brave putting the bolded on this forum :). I agree for the most part, I do want them to invest a 1 or 2 in a WR though, mostly for the future rather than this upcoming year.
I want to win a super bowl next year. I understand the wr thought process, it's just a question of when and to what degree a wr can help. I want the help this year, don't care about the future while we have Josh, have to be worried about 2024.

I hope Wilson is good enough this season that the Stillers pay him large and he keeps Fields on the bench. Then next season I hope Fields moves on to the NFC where he finds success while Wilson totally implodes.
I think it's 1.2 million for Wilson from the Steelers, the Broncos will be paying him $37 million regardless of how Russ plays.

At 28, maybe, but I wouldn't move up for a player with his injury history.
I'd rather not draft a DE in R1, though. I can understand the interest in finding an elite pass rusher, but ignoring the high bust rate, the odds of that outside the top 10 are poor. You're probably just going to find another guy who averages 6-8 sacks per season. Plus, they have quite a bit of cap space invested in Miller and Epenesa over the next 2 years, plus a contract extension likely for Rousseau in the same time frame. I think they'd be better off throwing a couple of those 4th and 5th rounders at the position (or adding a 30+ veteran after June 1st) and re-evaluate in the next offseason.
I always thought with Von on the roster (as a teacher) and our DL rotation that we should have been able to convince a raw DE specimen or two to be on the practice squad. I've been disappointed we haven't been able to find guys like that.

Couple things on this - I think Wilson, Fields and Allen is better straight up and has more upside than Pickett, Trubisky and Rudolph.
Tomlin is looking at Wilson as the leading guy now:
The Steelers D (when Watt is healthy) doesn't need a lot of help. They had some ilb injuries last year that hurt them also. To Tomlin's credit, he does seem to have a knack for keeping the team on course. He has also handled many personalities in the past, so I don't know if pre-madonna Russ is going to be as large a problem as he has in the past couple of years. The Steelers have an established culture and the players to back it up, so I don't see him being able to pull the stuff he has in the past.
In the end I think the Steelers got better with this qb swap. They also dumped Dionte Johnson and Allen Robinson so they should be looking for a wr early. The wildcard will be what Arthur Smith wants to do in his first year. I assume they will be picking a center in the first three rounds as well as a wr, since Smith likes to run the ball.
Omar Kahn is making his mark on this team now, and the dynamic with Tomlin and the rest of the front office will determine how far they go on together. Ownership is getting tired of not winning playoff games. I'm hoping for more non-playoff seasons for the whole load of Steeler folk. I would love nothing more for them to run the ball well, play good defense and not make the playoffs.
