If the Bills are 14-3 but lose to the chiefs and the chiefs are 13-4 and provided these are the two best records who has the #1 seed?   Bills correct as record trumps all

I heard someone today I thought trying to make the point that Chiefs would get #1 as they beat the bills which is a “stronger” win than an actual win.

what in the heck am I missing from the conversation to get to this point?  I can’t figure it out

You are missing nothing. The League doesn't go to tie breakers unless there are identical won/loss records. The 14-3 noted above is the #1 seed.

I thought Shaq would have dressed against the rams because he is so good at setting the edge. Impressed they were so good against the run. He may be inactive frequently.

I wasn't surprised to see him inactive. In looking over the roster I thought he may be the candidate to be sent to the practice squad when Tre comes back. If tonight is an indication, that D-line rotation is going to be tough to crack.

  3. Elam's strength is playing press, he is still learning how to "effectively" play zone.  Benford's strong suit is zone and as Collingsworth said, the Bills played zone all night. Thus Benford was the best choice to play in tonight's game plan. I'm confident they can coach Elam up to speed as he gains more experience. He has all the physical tools to excel.

KJ, always good hearing from you and yes, good points.  Frazier has been selective and declined if I remember correctly the Texans interview before Cully was hired.  He’s going to have to accept dumpster fires if he wants a chance.

Actually he did interview for the Texans job:

I think he would take any head coach job he could get, no matter that prospective team's current situation.

I remember watching him play for Miami when I was young. But not in great detail.  Who would you compare him to in the modern age?  Anyone on today's Bills?  Maybe Isiah McKenzie.

Marlin was more acrobatic than McKenzie is and was a better route runner with good hands. Ironically the player that came to me as comparable is Lamar Jackson, even though he’s a qb, because of his skill set. Evidently Bill Polian also saw Lamar’s skills at wr as a fit as he said that would be his best position as a pro. Marlin was a pure joy to watch.

Dumb topic but this time of the season is boring. You’re having a dinner party and can invite two Bills players (one past and one current) and one Actor/Actress. The menu is whatever the hell you want. Who ya’ got?

    I’m going with:

Past Bills player: Reggie McKenzie (one of our best OL IMO and smart front office guy)

You seem to be confusing our former guard Reggie McKenzie, age 71, with Dolphins senior personnel executive and former linebacker Reggie McKenzie, age 59. No doubt though our Reggie is a smart guy as he established Reggie McKenzie Industrial Materials, an industrial products company; even if he’s not a front office guy.  🦬

I remember getting the autographs of these players at Fredonia: Joe Feguson, Dann "the Man" Manucci, David Humm, Rod Kush, and Nick Mike-Mayer. Once I was walking to the practice area on the walkway by the dorms, and I saw two guys. I asked if they were Bills, and they said yes. One signed my autograph, and the other kept walking, lol. No one famous. They weren't huge either; really no one was back then, even Bruce Smit

I guess you never saw "House" Ballard 😲 At 6'6 & 325lbs (at least) he was definitely on the large side. 😅

People need to move on man.  Seriously, all this whining over a 4th round pick used to get the best player on Beanes board is approaching "Wrong Josh" levels...or "We way overpaid for Diggs" levels.

I mean seriously, all this same nonsense happened when we traded for Diggs and people lost their minds over that extra 4th that was included.  Then Diggs shut you all up.  Just like Josh Allen shut you all up.  Just like Tre White shut you all up when you freaked out we traded down and took him.

You would think people would learn after being wrong so many times about these freak outs to trust the fact they don't know a fraction of what our Front Office does and that pissing and moaning to know end after a pick or trade is unbelievably premature and pretty pointless.

Bottom line, he was the only player on Beanes board worthy of a first round selection, so he went and got him.  Everything about this kid is exciting from his speed, size, skills, and most importantly his apparent work ethic and commitment to being the best he can be from all we have seen and heard from him so far.

So make it stop already...move on, who cares about this stupid 4th round pick if Elam becomes a high end corner opposite Tre for years to come.  And don't think I didn't notice many of the people freaking out in the Elam thread are literally some of the same people who ironically spent the past 3 years complaining about Levi Wallace and Dane Jackson and how we needed a better corner too.

I totally agree with your sentiment. I think those upset about losing a 4th are stuck in the drought mindset when we were constantly trying to build a decent team. Back then every potential player was needed to try to better the roster. Now, with a built team, it's more important to add that impactful player that they see in reach.

For some reason, the lone guy I equate with the 4th round is Tim Euhus.

I'd forgotten about him, but when I think 4th round Jeff Yeates always comes to mind. He's someone 98% of the people here likely have never heard of. He was a decent d-lineman in the 70's that I remember built swimming pools in the off season. Football careers have changed a bit since then.

Plus most/many of us believe the 2017 draft was primarily directed by McDermott himself. Don't we? It HAD to be him pulling those strings. HE later selected/endorsed Beane as HIS GM. I think it's clear that McD is a MAJOR player in the drafting.

It was said at the time that McD brought the Carolina board with him, and supposedly ticked them off as we picked there rated players before them.

? did injuries derail Hodgkins this past off - season?  I thought he just got cut and put onto practice squad, no injuries.

It's Hodgins without the k - Hodgkins is a terrible disease.

Hodgins dealt with a knee injury late in camp and failed to secure a spot on Buffalo's 53-man roster, but he'll remain in the organization as part of the practice squad.

The knee issue emerged for Hodgins in the team's first preseason game Aug. 13, and he has yet to retake the field. Hodgins had some momentum with strong reviews from the coaching staff regarding his play at OTAs and early on in training camp. However, this injury seemingly puts his roster spot in jeopardy, as he's also competing with Jake Kumerow and Marquez Stevenson for a role among the receiver corps.

That was awesome! Thanks for sharing it. Josh is such a humble grounded guy and what a great teammate and leader. How many other Qb's love going away to training camp so they can be with their guys all day for 2 1-2 weeks. The more the rest of the country sees of him, the more he is going to be loved. Having his dog nose in there a few times was great.

I wasn't raising Megatron or Donald to show that you have to draft them.  I was responding to your statement that when you draft stars, you can't afford to pay them when they come off their rookie deals.   If you draft a guy who shows in four years that he's going to the Hall of Fame, you pay him.

And, yes, it does matter whether you draft Megatron or get him in free agency, for several reasons.   First, as I just said, if you have a Megatron or Donald, he's not going to hit free agency.

Second, most of the guys who do make it to free agency may have had some good-looking years, but they are not sure things like the superstars.  Or, they're superstars on their third contract, like JJ Watt.  So, there's risk in the free agent market.   If you pay big time and the guy craps out, it really hurts.  If you draft a sure-fire star and he craps out, he hasn't ruined your cap.

Third, I wrote about this somewhere today.  If you're building for the long term, you're objective is to have the best talent you can have at the lowest price.  Drafting Josh Allen is much better than signing Josh Allen after his fifth year, because over the his career, if you've drafted him, the average cost per year of having him is lower.   It's kind of like buying Apple stock.   Sure, you can buy it today, at full market price, and it's probably going to be a good performer for you.   But some other guy bought it thirty years ago, or even twenty or ten years ago.   Today, both buyers are getting the same good performance out of Apple, but the guy who bought it early, at the lower price, has done better with his money.

There's a lot of good sense built into how McBeane are doing it.   The only real question, I think, is the one that some people raise, which is whether all of this is based too much on averages - it's great to have the best averages over the long term, but averages don't win conference championship games - players do.

Another part of this is that you know the players character and attitude after 4 years. You have a much more informed idea if the guy has just been playing for a contract (Jordan Phillips?) or if his attitude and intensity will remain after he gets paid (Josh, easy example:D).

I have answered the question multiple times about what I think the strategy should have been this year. A proven vet edge (maybe one will still arrive?) and a proper upgrade at guard. Some will say we have the latter, I said last week what I thought about Saffold I am not gonna change my view and get the pom poms out just because the Bills signed him. The names I had on the wish list this year were Andrew Norwell and Chandler Jones.

But look I was attacked two years ago for saying Addison was over the hill and on a steep decline. I was proven right.

I was attacked last year for saying Emmanuel Sanders had slowed down and would struggle to hold onto a starting job. I was proven right.

I don't sit here trying to dislike their free agent moves I am just consistent and honest with what I think. In isolation I like the two pick ups at defensive tackle. But the FA modus operandi of hole fillers has given us arguably the deepest roster in football for 2 years running. And depth is great. But difference makers are greater.

I understand the strategy (I didn't care for the Addison or Emmanuel signings either), but I'm still wondering who they could have "realistically" signed that was a difference maker. Especially given the restraints of the cap and the needed desire of any said players to sign with the team. Buffalo has not been a draw for elite players, although that mindset seems to be changing from what we have recently heard. So who are those difference makers they could have signed in the last 3 years?

To me is still looks like quantity hole fillers rather than 1 or 2 difference makers. Beane will have to wean himself of the desire to be the deepest roster in the NFL (have arguably been that for 2 years) to focus more on having the 4 or 5 difference makers most Superbowl winners have (we have 3).

You are inferring that difference makers have been available. Who do you see as a difference maker that Beane could have "realistically" signed since he has been with the team?
