Losing Pickett is a bad omen. Signing him would lead me to believe the Bills were serious. It looks like Ralph is still pissed at the players getting too much money. You got that right. FA's are looking for the money. The Bills needed to blow his socks off with an offer so that he couldn't leave town unsigned. There are no realistic FA's out there who could improve the Bills at DT at this point. Ugh! Green Bay apparently came up with the dough and the Bills probably thought they could pick him up with some hot wings and soda. I am not writing off the entire off season until the new season starts, but it ain't looking promising. The final kick in the balls will be when they announce Moulds is staying with a $10.85 million dollar cap hit for 2006.

One great thing about Marv Levy is his personality and charm. (unlike Smiling Tom Donahoe) He is such a friendly guy that I believe he can persuade most FA's he has in for a visit that Buffalo is the place for them. With Levy and DL coach Kollar from the Rams, I believe the Bills will sign Pickett. Of course, it goes without saying that they will have to overpay him.

Failing to understand a hypothetical question is stupid. The possibility exists that a top rated QB may be there at #8. Evaluating the future success of the top pick is a completely different question. The question pertained to the propriety of drafting a QB or doing something else. I favor doing something else (i.e. trading down if possible) but I hope a QB is on the board to give the Bills some leverage at least.

Here's what I wish the Bills FA signings looked like: the Rams have added defensive tackle La'Roi Glover, Wil Witherspoon and safety Corey Chavous to their defense. Nice pick-ups for the Rams. It takes some blue chippers to make a difference (i.e. Cornelius Bennett, Bryce Paup, Takeo Spikes) I can't exactly say Robert Royal fits into the blue chipper category. But who knows?

Excellent points. Which begs the question: If nobody else is willing to take on a 33 yr old WR with a monster contract , then why are the Bills keeping him (so far)? It doesn't make sense to keep him IMHO.

I see Triplett, Royal, and Davis replacing Sam Adams, Mark Campbell and Josh Reed. Are these upgrades, downgrades or breakeven moves? We won't know for awhile, but I would be interested to know what everybody thinks so far. Maybe this should be a poll question.

Unfortunately for Buffalo, the Bills seem to overpay somewhat to attract free agents. As such, the Bills need as much free cap space as possible. Moulds is like any veteran who is looking to maximize his pay as his career nears an end. I'm not blaming him per se. Although if he was so interested in the team, he would take a pay cut. As a business and team rebuilding strategy, I feel it would be best for the Bills future to remove Moulds salary burden from the team as soon as possible. The team needs to move on without Moulds. No malice intended.

Finally the voice of reason speaks up. Well said. The team is rebuilding. If you honestly believe Moulds will see the playoffs with Buffalo next year then there's nothing anybody can say to convince you that cutting Moulds is the smart move. Brandon has it right - it's about next year's cap space. Moulds will also want a multi-year deal. Even if it is structured to be cap friendly up front, the cap hit will be pushed into the future long after he is gone. What's smart about that? Those were the kind of deals that got John Butler in trouble and why the Bills suffered for many years thereafter. Moulds skills are declining with age. The stats back it up. The paradigm for handling vets like Moulds was typified by New England. You cut or trade the overpriced vets as their skills decline (i.e Milloy, Law,etc.) and you rebuild and renew your team consistently year by year. Hanging on to overpriced vets for sentimental reasons is a formula for losers.

I guess Joe Gibbs didn't exactly dump TE Royal. [Gibbs is confident the team -- once under the cap -- will be able to re-sign safety Ryan Clark and tight end Robert Royal.
