No real point here, but this has been an amusing election to watch:
The fine town of Hoboken, NJ is 1 square mile in size, with about 40,000 residents.
- The current mayoral race features the incumbent who has raised well over $500,000 (!!!!) vs the challenger with about $150k. The mayor is getting his $$ largely from developers who are trying to tear down old buildings to throw up new condos and sell them for $400k + for a 1BR.
- The current mayor spends $140k per year on a car and driver (the town is 1 square mile!!!!)
- The budget has gone from $50 million to over $80 million in the past 4 years - no tax increases but this is just because revenues are rolling in because of all the new condos. They've also had a budget shortfall every single year and have had to fill budget gaps by selling off city parking garages etc.
- The last mayor of Hoboken is now in jail for accepting $300k + in bribes over his term.
- There are some housing projects in the back of town, and it is a well known fact that they "hire" these residents to be "election helpers" for $50....basically buying votes for $50 each.
it never ceases to amaze me.
Yeah, but Fiore's Deli and Marie's Bakery are two of the best places on Earth.

Bill, you will NEVER let go of the Drew issue. He flat out stunk his last 40 games in the Bills uniform, otherwise he'd still be here. The Coaches demanded a change and were not blinded by past stats and glorified, long gone legend status among a minority of fans. He WAS good in his day but Belichick made a change for a very good reason in 2001. He refused to insert DB back into the lineup and looked to Brady to energize his floundering team. With your logic, Brady, a 6th round pick , would have no business being allowed a chance to retain his job, once Bledsoe was healthy. He was completely unproven also. Drew would have cost Belichick his job and was playing poorly.
I appreciate what he did for his 3 years here but it obviously wasn't working. I'm a Bills fan first and root for the laundry. It's unconditional allegiance, since I grew up here and have attended well over 300 games in person. It's never conditional, based on certain name players having to wear the uniform.
I do NOT attach myself to chosen players and make them bigger than the team. You obviously resent the Losman talk, which can be over the top but it's natural enthusiasm of the fans. I've been watching this team since the 60's and keep an open mind. Change happens and many times, it does work out for the better.
Brother, please do not imply that I am less of a fan because I didn't like a personnel move; one which by the way has NOT been proven to be correct.
Have we been to games together? I am thinking that you know that if I lived in WNY (which I would do if my wife agreed), I would be a season ticket holder.
I do not resent the "Losman talk." It is to be expected on a Bills board.
What I DO find hard to relate to are comments such as yours which call JP a "far better alternative" before he has proven anything, and displayed some not so good things to boot.
I will be cheering him as loud as you if he is still the starter in the game we attend this year. What I will not do is enter the season with blind expectations that JP will be a great qb.
He will have to convince me on the football field.
If you think about it, maybe I am MAKING sense.

I don't know. Maybe because McNally knows what he's doing and it's the first time since Jim Ringo that the Bills have had GOOD coaching AND continuity there?
...with a lousy OL coach, Bob Wylie. Ever heard of him? He was the OL coach of the Cards last year and thought Kendall was expendable. Enough said.
Definitely an upgrade. As I said before, he's a beast in the running game and gave up fewer sacks last year than the combo of Tucker and Smith.
He's improving annually, but admittedly I'd rather have a better player here. Here's hoping McNally gets Preston up to speed quickly.
Forget the salary cap hit. That's water under the bridge and we can't do anything about it now. Harping on how MW won't live up to his salary won't get you anywhere. Just be glad he started to dominate towards the end of last season and that he's in-shape, motivated, and is being tutored by McNally.
Again who were they all coached by? No one of significance. Coaching plays a BIG part in things. Just look at the Pats for proof of that.
The Bills didn't draft for depth, true: they added it in FA. They added several guys with experience, and starting experience at that, not untested rookies from a weak draft.
With a perceived hole at LT, the Bills didn't go after Shelton and won't be pursuing Verba. Doesn't sound like they're all that worried about LT. I guess we'll see, but I have more optimism for the O-line than you do.
Very good response. I will address it one subject at a time:
1) Coaching does mean a lot, but Gandy played at Notre Dame as I recall. He has probably been playing football since he was 10 years old. He has been coached for years by professional coaches. I find it hard to believe that coaching will bring him up another tier. Remember, this is a Left Tackle who was released outright.
When was the last time a LT who is a very good player get released. Verba you say?
What was his expected cap hit? It also seems as if he had serious personality issues.
2) PLEASE, do not ask me to "forget the salary cap hit" wrt Mike Williams. Would you have liked to keep Jennings? Or PW? How about the OG from Indy? Any of these things could have happened if MW counted for as little as HALF of his cap hit!
Furthermore, that is only for THIS season. Next year will be the same dismal story. He will cost a ton of dead space to release. Bottom line wrt MW? We are stuck with him, his contract, and his fat ass for at least a year, perhaps more. If he does not produce, more than 10% of the Bills cap allotment will be flushed down the toilet. At this point, MW is an average RIGHT tackle who makes 9.17 mil. See what I mean???
In summary, the Bills need to devote some serious resources to the OL in lieu of trading away picks and drafting midgets. When they do so, they need to do better than an overweight, headcase RIGHT tackle for 9.17 mil per season.
Again, jmo.

Silver has been holding up this legislation for 5 years. Read the link provided in this thread by Albany NY. He is said to have protected a staffer who is a sex offender (rapist).
Then, just continue to rationalize away as a phony liberal stooge.
And enjoy yourself while doing so.

>>>>I do like Holcomb and have no problem going to him due to poor play or injury. Both are far better alternatives than the ineffective, limited DB.<<<<
Wishful thinking Mark. Typing something as fact doesn't render it as such.
If JP throws for 1/2 of Drew's touchdowns, yardage, and/or wins both in the playoffs and regular season, he will have had a very good career. It is also far from likely.
"Far better?" Before JP has wiped his a$$? Before he has lasted a preseason without getting almost crippled due to brushing up against an older defensive back?
Really.
-
The line will probably suck. Why should this year be any different?
LT: Gandy, a castoff from a lousy team with a lousy OL.
Anderson: Probably an upgrade.
Teague: An adequate OC.
Villarial: A bright spot. This guy can play; he is a fine RG.
Williams: A 9 million dollar liability thus far. Who can predict what his yearly "issue" will be in 05. I am thinking that getting rid of Travis can only help, but Big Mike has done nothing to indicate that he is worth even half of his cap hit.
Can he step up? I suppose, but other than homerism, what would lead any sane fan to believe that he will become a great RT, which is what his salary calls for?
The Bills historically devote few resources to the OL, and when they have for the last 11 or so years, the list of mistakes is long and sad.
Corey Louchiey
Mike Williams (for 9 mil)
Kris Farris
Joe Panos
Marcus Spriggs
Jamie Nails
Hulsey (cant remember his first name)
Jerry Ostroski (a 15 million dollar scrub)
John Fina ( a sub par "franchise" player)
There are probably a lot more that I am blocking out.
In any event, the Bills are a cold weather team that generally plays with a weak offensive line. Jennings was a very good pick in round 3 and he is gone.
This season, we drafted a midget with our first pick instead of opting for OL depth, ala Pittsburgh.
Last year, we gave away much needed picks for a qb. who will start this year because our team lost the season finale against the alma mater of both our head coach and GM.
Our OL is well coached, but will be defending an untested qb. I know, he threw a good pass against Denver in a preseason game and Shannahan was impressed!
In any event, I find little reason to expect our OL to be up to the challenge.
They haven't been for many years, there is no LT and a rookie qb.
From what I know about football, this does not sound good.

In Suffolk County, NY, 16% of the settlement money was used for quit smoking programs. In Nassau County, 0% of the money was used in this manner. It was thrown into the general fund of the county, and they STILL had historic property tax hikes.
Besides, why is it the responsibility of the government, or those who sell a legal substance to help persons quit smoking?

Nothing creepy going on in the Republican Party, right?
What if some politician on the right had a child born at 20 weeks that died after two hours outside the womb. Upon the child's death, the politician took the baby home and cuddled it , kissed it, and made his other three children do the same, and even took pictures with the deceased...pictures he could later hang in his office. Please- I'll say it's a toss-up between the parties when it comes to creepy, OK?
JA, there are a TON of things that are creepy about the far right. Some of them for instance want to jail Howard Stern because he is "indecent." They even want to regulate him on Satellite Radio, a completely optional service. These fanatics are little different from the lefties, who have given the state authority to send "health inspectors" into bars, search them and issue summunses for "Ashtray Possession."
Fanatics such as these often meet in the middle, whereas they both confiscate our liberty.
One thing that I WILL say for Republicans is that you will be hard pressed to find them trying to protect sexual offenders; actualy legislate for them.
NYS Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is holding up legislation to protect us from sexual predators. He, as Harvey said, was also accused of protecting a rapist on his staff.
Forgive me if I am a tad more sickened by the left, especially the white liberals, who as none other than Al Sharpton says, "say one thing, and do another."

Thank the Lord (whoops, great creator spirit) that there are more than one of us out there. I am too busy hating soldiers, plotting ways to overthrow america, and thinking up ways too be more caring for our societies pedophiles that I almost forgot that there are (sniff) more than one of us out there.
Well, how DO you feel about the leadership of your party? Do you think that they represent the interests of the average American any more than the Bush Administration?
Btw, if your instinctive reaction is to ask me if I am very pleased with Bush, the answer is no. I am sickened by his labor policy, and do not favor the social security proposal. But, you know what......I think that he does a better job of keeping America safe than does Nancy Pelosi, and the long line of weak kneed, criminal coddling liars who are the leaders on the leadership dem side. The electorate seems to agree.
Jmo.

Hogboy on a rant vs. volunteer firemen?

First, I am not a democrat - the two parties are bought and sold corporate whores. So quit talking about my "party." The political spectrum is not as narrow as you would like it to be with all liberals being democrats and all conservatives being republicans. I am not liberal - I am progressive. Look it up - its VERY different.
Second, I have no idea what you are talking aout with Rev. Jackson - I assume you are talking about Jesse Jackson. I have not been paying attention to the Jackson trial so I do not know his involvement. But, I will say this. I know there is not a verdict yet - so how do YOU know he is a sex offender? All trials should be conducted through the media - great idea!
Well, the fact that he already paid out millions to silence an allegation, and that kiddie porn with little boys was found in his home are pretty good indications that Jackson is a pedophile, wouldn't you say?
But.....dont let me stand in the way of sympathy for sex offenders.
Thanks for proving my point.
-
Listen, the link is about one of YOUR party bigwigs that is coddling sex offenders, not mine.
"Progressive?" Is that how you would label Rev. "Wedlock" Jackson while he is in California consoling Michael Jackson? Yet another example of the dems seeking the criminal pervert vote.
Far too many dems have lost touch with mainstream life in our country. You may not see it nor want to see it, but it doesn't make it less true. When people such as Silver, Hillary, Sharpton and Jackson (two competing extortionists), Pelosi and Kerry are influential figures and leaders in your party, things are looking bad, wouldn't you agree?
-
I dont mean to offend anybody, but I am thinking that many of you guys need to try the food in NYC, where things like this are an afterthought.
-
Is anybody surprised?
To all of you actual, or pseudo libs.....why are you in favor of politicians, prisoners, war criminals, etc. who harm us, and our children? Do you simply hate our way of life? Guilt? What is wrong with you?
To all of you dems.....you will continue to be the losers that you presently are until you rid your party of this type of lowlife.
He was against smoking in bars, but is FOR more rights for sex offenders.
It is a shame. I wish that I could vote for more democrats, but the party is a vile, sinking ship.

Happy Birthday, and many more!

They think that they will be on the receiving end of a hefty lawsuit settlement, and they are frequently correct.
Look at some of the posts in this very thread.

Excellent post.
For those that say "murder is worse, as it is the end all, and victims of pedolphia are still alive", I ask you this:
Who is worse: a pedophile, or the father of the victim who goes and kills the pedophile? I'm not a parent yet, but believe me, if I had a child and someone molested them, they would be alive just long enough for me to get my hands on a gun. (and then of course shoot them in both shins and let them bleed to death in front of me).
There was that case in Louisiana. Do you remember it? A karate teacher took a 12 year old (or thereabout) boy to California. The kid called home, and the father convinced them to return.
Upon arrival, the father was waiting at the airport with a shotgun under his coat, which was draped over his arm. Police were there (and heard cursing
), but the father managed to kill this scumbag.
He was arrested (no choice), and received thousands of dollars in the mail. The jury acquitted him in an hour or 2.
This was the greatest example in my memory of our justice system truly working.

He would still want a new deal. He does now, in spite of his rather dismal performance in 04, in which he was a stoned cold loser in every start, as were the Buffalo Bills.

C'mon. Jackson is a fabulous entertainer, and has great monetary success. Even a craven agent would have noticed problems, if only to protect the cash stream, and taken steps to correct the problems whatever their root or cause.
Jackson is nobody's fool. I find it sad that such a tremendous entertainment talent has reached this state, but I think that it's his own doing and that he chose to reject good consul through the years.

Folks simply do not seem to get it that draft choices are a way to somewhat express how good they think a player is, but this all falls apart when one is saying how much a particular team will/should trade for a particular player.
Was Corey Dillon worth NE giving up a second for. Yep. They had enough questions about their running game in the post-Antowai era and they were pretty solid in other areas, one could have justified them giving up a 1st for the RB they wanted.
In retrospect (hindsight being 20-20) from his performance individually and based on team results it was a good trade.
However, was he worth a 2nd given up by the Bills? No way. In fact, with Henry coming off of 2 1300+ years and WM waiting in development, folks would have been justified in throwing hissy-fits if we gave up even a 7th pick to get Dillon at the time.
Absolute judgwments about how good/bad a player is are fair game for anyone and the arguments speak for themselves. However, trade value is determined by supply/demand and varies from team to team depending as much (or even more) on what they have at that position than it does a judgement about how good/bad a player performs.
This estimation is even further skewed from simply judging skill levels by the contract status and size of a player's compensation. Travis Henry may be worth as much as Alexander even though Alexander is a far better RB simply based on contract status.
Stating a player's skill level based on him being allegedly worth some level of draft pick because the value of a draft pick not only varies hugely from year to year (JP was the 4th QB taken last year and many complained that the Bills gave up to much to get him at #21 but he may well have been the 1st QB taken this year even if he put the same numbers if he stayed in school). but it also varies a huge amount within a draft (few would have complained if the Bills had taken Kelsay with their 1st pick in 2003, but TD smartly saw that the draft pick assigned to a player is more about supply/demand rather than about merely his play and passed because he figured he would be there in the 2nd roung because demand for DEs was so low after a first round run on the position.
Is Alexander worth a 3rd? He is probably worth a future first if you are Jax and decide Taylor is hurt and you could sign him reasonably. However, he is worth nothing to SD with Tomlinson holding down the spot.
Treating draft value as though it is an absoulte statement which applies to all teams is simply incorrect.
Sorry, but there is still some connection. Alexander is better than Travis at each and every phase of football.
Yes, his contract demands do serve to lessen his trade value, but it does not change the fact that NO team will ever pay more for a braindead miscreant than a truly top notch back.
I would not expect this news to serve as a wakeup call as to what Travis is worth. Nothing else did, including the lack of offers in the draft.
Continue to rationalize as you will, but in terms of a trade, Travis Henry is all but worthless.

Please allow me to spell out the difference in the 2 crimes:
I responded to the scene of an elderly "church lady" in Brooklyn who hacked her husband with a meat cleaver after catching him in her bed with a neighbor. This woman had NO police record, and was well respected in her community. In fact, she would mentor children, and imo, served as a role model.
She did not resist arrest, and was crying for hours. I actually felt sympathy for her. She was NOT a criminal.
This of course is only one type of murder, and is not to be confused with the sociopathic "Ted Bundy" thing.
Switch gears to pedophiles:
Rapists (who do adults) are said to be more about violence than sexual gratification. I have never attended nor heard of a training course that says otherwise. They want to humiliate their victims and "bring them down to their level." Often, they do not ejaculate.
Pedophiles are about sex. This is their attraction. They do know that it is not a good thing for the victim, but they do not care. This is why they often kill their victims. It is part of the thrill, and provides an avenue of escape so they can continue to fill their desires.
There is NO cure for pedophilia. It is like trying to convince me that Raquel Welsh, in her younger years, had no sexual appeal. This is impossible, because she was the best looking human I have ever met (other than of course my wife and cablelady
). Therapists try to convince them not to hurt others, etc., but remember, this is their sexual appetite. The chances for success are not good.
Btw, although more than 70% of victims are male, pedophilia is NOT to be confused with being gay.
I would not care if Michael Jackson received the death penalty. I ask God to forgive me, but I might be glad.
That said, I would like some time alone with any parent who would willingly hand over their child to that animal.
End of Rant.....Sorry guys.
-
Very good point.
It looks like you and I are in full agreement!
-
That is the life of a police officer, and sadly, now a soldier. I will even throw doctors into the mix. People watch ER, and feel qualified to judge the actions of a person with experience, and a mega-education.
These officers had NO idea of what to expect from this woman other than violence. She did attack one of them, an irrational act to say the least. She was in a car that could be used as a weapon, or to conceal one.
I am just glad that there are still upstanding citizens like you and others here to counteract the anti-establishment at any cost a-holes who would ruin the lives and careers of brave men and women who put their lives on the line for the very freedom which they enjoy.

Preseason is a terrible evaluation but Losman will start as long as he's healthy. I think the "braintrust" at OBD has alot more patience than we do and that's probably a good thing. Holcomb is an excellent insurance policy, though.
I really don't know what to expect from him, to be honest. He's certainly athletic and he seems to be pretty smart. That said, he didn't do much in his limited action last season to give me the confidence that the very smart folks who see him every day obviously have. I hope they're right.
The bottom paragraph is what I have been trying to say to you from day one.
Well stated, I might add.

>>> The problem isn't laws, it's enforcement. Try doing that once in awhile instead of sending cops into bars to look for ashtrays.<<<
Well stated AD. Here in NY, "health inspectors" are free to go behind the bar and literally "search" for ashtrays. Great, huh?
Cops are also pretty busy standing at road blocks doing seat belt enforcement. "Click-it or Ticket," ya know what I mean?
Let's see.....you MUST wear a seat belt in a car, but motorcycles are legal....make sense?
Do you think that politicians are getting money from the insurance companies for the seat belt enforcement, or does the left enact these rules because they care about our safety?
