With the signing of Morrow, the team breakdown now looks as follows (not including futures/reserve players

    Total current players =

Offense 17 of 23 players (roster allocation to the position from 2023 in (x)).

    QB (2) - current 2: Allen & Trubisky

    RB/FB (4) - current 2: Cook & Gilliam

TE (3) - current 3: Kincaid, Knox, Morris

    WR (5) - current 3: Diggs, Shakir, & Shorter

Oline (9) - current 7: Brown, Dawkins, McGovern, Torrence, Edwards, Anderson & Van Denmark (Doyle still in the mix)

    Defense 18 of 25 players

Dline (10) - Current 6 - Jones, Oliver, Rousseau, Miller, Jonathan, & Epenesa (Cline and Ankou also in the mix)

    LBs (5) - current 5 - Milano, Benard, Williams, Morrow, & Spector

    CB (6) - current 4 - Johnson, Douglas, Benford, & Elam

    S (4) - Current 3 - Rapp, Hamlin, & Lewis (CB)

Specialists 4 of 3 slots - Bass (PK), Ferguson (LS), Martin (P) & Haack (P) - one of Haack or Martin aren't going to make the team.

Looks like there are 13 jobs still available - 2 RB, 2 WR, 2 OL, 4 DL, 2 CB & 1 S.  My guess is 6-7 of these jobs will go to draft picks (WR, S, CB, OL, RB, 2DL?).  Still hopeful Ty Johnson returns at RB.

Beane has done a crazy amount of work the last 7 days getting the cap in order and filling a lot of roster spots.  Phase 1 was getting cap in order.  Phase 2 was re-building the roster depth.  Phase 3 now dipping tie into free agency and seeing if we can land a WR still available.  Same with safety and d-line.  Some intriguing options still out there.  Will also be interesting what Chargers do to get under the cap.  We are in way better shape than I thought we’d be in 7 days ago.

I found these graphics to be EXCELLENT when trying to quantify Jones' impact on our defense. It compares the Bills' defensive numbers when Jones was in the lineup vs when he wasn't.

Pretty irrefutable evidence that he had a major positive impact on the Bills defense.

Jones is solid but those numbers could be skewed by how bad his backups were.  When Phillips played, he didn’t even try to hold the point of attack.  Just tried to get in the backfield without any regard for the run game.

  3. I bet Poyer comes back on a 1 year $3m deal.  Seems like type of dude who’s too proud to take a paycut and I respect that.  Same thing happened last year but he was a free agent.  This year Beane did him favor cutting him before free agency so he can shop his services but if he doesn’t retire I bet he ends up back in Buffalo.  Could see same for Tre if he doesnt retire.

  4. My guess is Knox reworked deal is very similar to Hunter Henry’s 3 year $27m deal with $15 guaranteed.  He’s trading his bigger deal for more guaranteed money.  Bills want him on team next couple of years but at a lower number.

  5. Kudus to the Steelers.  This is a completely one-sided deal.  Even if Pickett wins the job, there are always QB injuries and a desperate win now team would probably unload a 2nd rounder for that contract if a Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, Purdue, Hurts goes down.  Heck they could probably flip him for a 3rd rounder on the 2nd day of the draft once the 1st round QB’s are taken.

This is due to his Denver contract containing offset language. Whatever he gets paid this season by another team gets deducted from what Denver has to pay him.

Also the Steelers play at Denver this year.

I understand that but Pittsburgh has zero skin in the game.  What happens if a QB they didn’t think would be there lasts until their pick?  Or let’s say Pickett looks decent in training camp.  Or Pittsburgh starts 0-2 with Wilson starting.  Feels like Wilson is trying too hard to show people he still wants to play.  Even $5m from Pittsburgh shows some commitment towards Wilson.

His contract is a dollar for dollar offset, so he doesn’t get a penny more of actual money unless he gets paid more than $39 million.  The part that isn’t offset is the salary cap, so “earning” more would only hurt the team’s salary cap.

I get that.  I’m just saying the Steelers can move on from him like they’re cutting the 90th man on the roster.  A top QB could fall to them in the draft.  If Pickett is even close to him in training camp, they’ll go with Pickett since he’s under contract for at least 2 more years.  To the Steelers that contract is the equivalent of training camp fodder.

I imagine he’s out of our price range

Yes, if McDermott keeps his rotation of mediocre on the D-Line.  Sign a difference maker like Armstead who can play End on rush downs and DT on pass downs.  Armstead, Oliver, Sweat at pick 60, Rousseau on 1st/2nd down.  Von, Oliver, armstead, Rousseau on pass downs.  Use draft picks and vet minimum guys for depth like other teams do and roll the dice on those 5 guys on the D Line.

  9. Not sure how much Armstead has left, but he has been a difference making player his whole career.  I don’t think he’s a traditional 1 Tech, but him and Oliver would be a nice duo on passing downs.

Joe Marino from Locked on Bills does some really good work. I watch a lot of his stuff.

He did a video the other day where he played the role of Brandon Beane and took the wheel in Free Agency. Broke things down pretty well in a realistic fashion, why each player fits, and included forecasted numbers from Pro Football Focus.

Here's the video with Cliff notes below of the moves he suggested:

    Re-Structure QB Josh Allen - Saves 24m

    Re-Structure TE Dawson Knox - Saves 6m

    Re-Structure DT Ed Oliver - Saves 3.94m

Extend OT Dion Dawkins - Saves 6.5m

Extend CB Taron Johnson - Saves 4.4m

    36.6m Under (+10.2m on 6/1 from Tre)

    Re-Sign DT Daquan Jones - 2 yr 12m

    Re-Sign DE AJ Epenesa - 3 yr 20.25m
    Re-Sign CB Dane Jackson - 1 yr 3m
    Re-Sign CB Cam Lewis - 1 yr 2m
    Re-Sign RB Ty Johnson - 1 yr 1.2m

Sign DT Shelby Harris - 1 yr 3m
Sign DT Greg Gaines - 1 yr 2m
Sign DE Carl Lawson - 1 yr 3.5m
    Sign S Alohi Gilman - 2 yr 6m
    Sign S Ashtyn Davis - 1 yr 2m
Sign C Brian Allen - (Forgets to say contract)
Sign OT Kendall Lamm - 1 yr 1.5m
Sign WR Noah Brown - 2 yr 7m
    Sign WR/KR Devin Duvernay - 2 yr 6m
Sign RB Ezekiel Elliott - 1 yr 2.5m
    Sign LB Del'Shawn Phillips - 1 yr 1.5m

Better hit on some studs in the draft if this is the plan.  16 guys and Ty Johnson might be the biggest difference maker on that list.

It'll be interesting to see how the team actually feels. I personally don't think the deep WR class is about the first round personally. I know some like Kiper/Field Yates think they could tie the record for first round WRs...I'm personally not as high on them as they are. To me, there's 4 no brainer first round WRs and then there's like 10 guys that are borderline 1st/2nd round talents.

Most draft pundits have roughly 5 or 6 WRs in the top 32 of the big board and 4 or 5 pass rushers in the same range. It's just that once you get past the first round talents, there aren't many pass rushers left while there are a million WRs.

And it’s not like drafting Rousseau, Epenesa, or Basham in the late 1st and 2nd rounds has helped us get over the hump.  With this WR class, I think the way to go is trade back from 28 (maybe with a team that likes Penix or Nix) and get more bites at the apple in the top 100 picks.  In a WR and OL rich draft, it’d be nice to draft 2 each by the end of the 5th round.

I'm not great at analyzing these things, but I believe his cap hit will be ~$2.3M this year, and we could cut him after this season for like $700K dead cap in 2025 and 2026. Not too bad. I just hope he isn't a starter.

Not much different than his deal last year except it’s for 3 years.
